PNC and Westbury Shows

Hey Guys, I attended both concerts, and they were both EXCELLENT! Even despite the technical difficuties...(Auntie Grizelda- Peter's Mic died and Davy went up and began singing the first verse of the song...). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any reviews (like from the papers/internet) of the 7/12 show at PNC or the 7/16 show at Westbury. Thanks!

This really is a question you can't really answer. I mean what would of happened if John never met Paul?

The 4 Monkees were chosen out of casting call from a large group of peolple. They chose the best, it wouldn't of worked ANY OTHER WAY.

Mike's career path has changed through out the years. The proof of that alone shows that he would of made something in show business. He's quite talented and can do things on his own. I dont think he would of been the star they all became, but I think he had a better chance then say Micky and Peter. The samething goes for Davy, both of these guys already had record contracts.

Actually, I've heard about the exact opposite of Julianna. Peter broke off with the blonde live-in right before they started touring, and appears to be playing the field right now. I haven't heard of David dating anyone seriously since Gillian. Micky is apparently still dating that Donna girl, cause someone just said she was at Westbury and he dedicated a song to her.

Just got back from Meadowbrook Farm..great show, great crowd. The boys pulled out some unusual stuff - Davy's "Love You Forever" and "No Time" with each guy taking a verse. I sorta remember the set list though it is a little shaky in the middle, I'm sure I have all of the songs: Here goes: Last Train to Clarksville, Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow), For Pete's Sake, Girl I Knew Somewhere, Valleri, Randy's Scouse Git, Mary, Mary, Auntie Grizelda, Can You Dig It, I Wanna Be Free, Love You Forever, Going Down, Girl, Higher and Higher, Peter's Bach Thing, No Time, Long Title: Do I Have to Do This All Over Again, Since I Fell For You (Mickey solo), Lucille (Peter Solo), Oliver Medley (Davy solo), That Was Then, This Is Now (with Davy), A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, She Hangs Out, Porpoise Song, Listen to the Band, Daydream Beleiver. Encore: I'm A Believer, Stepping Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday. My 8 year old sang through the whole show.

I liked the movie but I think that they could have done better. Long Title shoulda been playing in Mike's bday scene in HEAD, they weren't even in order doing the Monkee walk!, and they didn't say what happened to Phyllis or even hint that Peter then left the group. And what - Samantha didn't exist??

MONKEE fan, I've never seen your name on this board before. Why are you hiding your identity if you feel so strongly?

Here’s a warning, this is a loooooooong post. Sorry, but I have a lot to say about the differences and similarities between these two bands.

My question about the new album was because it has a different sound from most of the Bee Gees work (sounds more like some of their early stuff), which reminds me a lot of the Monkees in many ways. Especially on the tracks were Maurice is singing lead vocal (i.e. 'Man in the Middle').

I find the Bee Gees to be very similar to the Monkees as a band, but they are regarded very differently (by listeners, critics). It confuses me as to why the Bee Gees are regarded as 'legendary' and the Monkees are regarded as 'has-beens'. The Bee Gees had many more hits than the Monkees, but I believe that a large part of that could be attributed to opportunity. As in, the Bee Gees had more opportunity to make themselves heard.

On the Bee Gees new album, there’s a variety of musical styles, contemporary sounds that still resemble what you’d expect from the Bee Gees, some powerful ballads (something the Monkees never really tried, but I think they’d be great with), new music that sounds like it should be old music (nostalgic, even though you’ve never really heard it before), and complete departures from what you would expect. This variety created a dynamic album, that I hold in high regard. Why can’t the Monkees do something like that? People keep talking about how a new Monkees album should sound...well, why can’t it be a variety of what the Monkees are capable of? So what if the album never goes diamond! It’ll be a great accomplishment for the Monkees, and a wonderful experience for fans new and old.

I think the Monkees are involved with the wrong people for that kind of a project, though. Rhino seems more interested in keeping the Monkees past alive, rather than try to see them through the present, and build a bigger future. And I can’t say I blame them for being cautious. I happen to love the Justus album, but that’s because I’m a fan that would support anything they did, and love it. But Justus is not something that could be appealing to a large outside audience who didn’t already like the Monkees. The Bee Gees new album has that kind of appeal that would bring in a new fan, and make them want to find out more. I was listening to the album at work one day, and a co-worker who had never listened to the Bee Gees became an instant fan! The Monkees CAN DO THIS! If anyone has the Bee Gees new album, or even wants to go to cdnow.com and listen to some clips, some of those songs would work very well with the Monkees! Especially track #2. Just my opinion. I think the Monkees are just as capable as the Bee Gees, but the need to step away from what they’ve done in the past and make a new album that has universal appeal. By that, I mean that they shouldn’t just go for an album with ONE overall sound, they should try to make an album that covers a few musical bases, without going to the extreme in any one direction.

Sorry this is so long, and if you made it this far, you deserve a medal!

Lol! Hunger and eviction, are you sure you're not talking about Peter Tork? Michael Blessing was a pretty good songwriter who was already signed on Colpix records, and was a frequent player at the local LA clubs. If he didn't wind up as a Monkee, he would have been doing something else in music business and been successful at that I think. Maybe not as worldly successful as with The Monkees, and maybe not as fast, but he would probably turn out just fine.

As far as The Monkees needing him, would Bill Chadwick have went to the press and said "Call us fake, because by god we are!" and have the group be as popular as they are now? Letting the public know about how real The Monkees were in January 1967 set in motion events that would lead to "Headquarters", "PAC&J Ltd", and "Daydream Believer". Without that, they could have been the true pre-Partridge Family.

I don't think Mike's songwriting gave The Monkees any creditibility until after January 1967. They were doing things like any other music act, exception The Beatles, at that time. Without Mike telling the press how things were, his songwriting would not have been too noticable to make a difference in The Monkees' image unless Kirshner did a 180 and gave Nez an A side of a single.

Watching it was slightly freaky. The producers took a major poetic license with the timing of the film and in order not to confuse the general audience.

Headquarters may have been bumped off the #1 slot after SPLHCB, but I don't think it stopped selling altogether (The Monkees and The Beatles target age range were different). Davy getting a black eye was on the set of the show, and Davy bead butted Peter first. So many changes, I kind of wonder if they just made the lead actors look like The Monkees and put Monkees on the title so many people would watch the film.

MONKEES license plate...coinkydink???

From: saturdayschild

Comments

Okay, this is one weird coinkydink, as Micky would say! Last night my husband and I were at the Trump Marina show in Atlantic City. This was the 4th show I have seen this year and this was by far the best. Even though the guys arrived a little late, (had trouble getting there from Buffalo earlier in the day), they were in a great mood and it really came across in the show.

Anyway, today, Sunday, we had to take my son to baseball camp up in North Central Pennsylvania. On the way home, on Route 80 East, in the Poconos, a car passes us and my husband says "Look at that license plate!". It simply said "MONKEES" and was from Michigan. A younger looking blonde woman was driving. Does anyone on this board know who this is? Quite a coincidence (sp?) since the Monkees were en route from Atlantic City to Virginia, nowhere near Northeast PA!!

So, if the MONKEES plate lady is on this board, I saw you on Route 80 and I love your license plate!!

From: Dan Lafferty

Comments

I posted a long and thoughtful response to this right after it was posted, and something went wrong and it didn't go through. I'm irritated. So I'll try and remember the gist of what I said and see if it works this time.

Obviously, the commercial success of the Monkees really wasn't due to his talents as a musician. Probably the closest things to hits that he wrote were "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" and "Mary, Mary" (but I'm not sure about that...I don't have the numbers in front of me!). As far as adding depth to the band, though, certainly he was the one person who kept them interesting and wrote songs that were timeless and undateable. "Nine Times Blue" could have been written today. Furthermore, if it weren't for his persistence and grit and determination to make the Monkees into a real band, I'm not sure there even would have been a third album.

I really don't know that his past with the Monkees actually helped his solo career. If anything, it may have hindered it. After all, many people who didn't like music like "I'm A Believer" but would have enjoyed "Good Clean Fun" and assumed they didn't like the Monkees due to what they were exposed to on the radio, didn't give Mike's solo music (or even his contributions to the Monkees, for that matter) a chance.

Comments on Wolf Trap Show

From: Jeff

Comments

I saw the Monkees' at the Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia (outside of Washington, D.C.) last night. This was my first Monkees' concert, and I thought they put on a great show. Micky, Davy, and Peter were backed up by an eight-piece band. The approximate set list is below. I might have missed a song or two, and some of the middle songs are out of order (please feel free to post corrections).

Last Train To Clarksville Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow The Girl I Knew Somewhere Valleri Randy Scouse Git A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You Mary, Mary Your Auntie Grizelda I Wanna Be Free I'll Love You Forever Goin' Down Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher) (Peter) Bach: Two Part Invention in F (Peter solo on electric keyboard) No Time Girl (women give flowers to Davy) Since I Fell For You (Mickey) Lucille (Peter) Oliver Medley (Davy) She Hangs Out That Was Then, This Is Now Long Title (from “Head”) Porpoise Song/Listen To The Band Medley Daydream Believer I'm A Believer (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone Pleasant Valley Sunday

At the concert, I purchased the "2001: Live in Las Vegas" CD that was recorded in March.  The 20-song set list is very close to the 26-song set I heard last night, and I think the CD is a good souvenir of the concert.  My one comment is that there wasn't a lot of improvisation or spontaneity between the March show and last night's show. Micky's introduction to "Randy Scouse Git" was repeated verbatim from the CD recording. His over-the-top soft-opera imitation of his father singing "Some Enchanted Evening" was also an exact copy. Davy repeated the exact same "Brady Bunch" introduction to "Girl".

I'm a big Beatles' fan, and I noted three Beatles' references during the show:

1) In the free Wolf Trap program, the write-up included: "During the two years the (Monkees' TV) show originally aired (1966-1968), Monkees' records outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined."

2) In introducing "Randy Scouse Git," Micky Dolenz said he wrote this after attending a party with the Beatles in 1966. He also said he didn't remember much about the party, but was told he had a good time!

3) "She Hangs Out" ended with the bass line to "Day Tripper."

I had heard "The Porpoise Song" before, but for whatever reason had never really noticed it. I "discovered" the song last night and love it! I will say, however, that I found "Porpoise Song" and "Listen to the Band" to be a strange medley/combination.

All in all, I had a great time last night, and was delighted to see the Monkees!

I no longer like Davy!

From: satschild73

After the July 21st A.C. concert, I spottted Davy standing with some other people by the bar. I VERY POLITELY asked him "Could I please have my picture taken with you?". He looked at me for a minute and said "sure", in the most pathetic response possible. He acted like I was begging for money or blood or something. He posed for picture and did not even smile. After the picture was taken I thanked him and he just turned around and didn't even say a word. I could understand if I was rude or I chased him down or interupted him, but I didn't. After I walked away he I saw him laughing and signing autographs and taking pictures with other people. I can't understand what the deal was. I've been a fan for so long and finally got the chance to meet him and he was just so rude. I was so disappointed. The only thing I could think of was, I had on a Monkees.net t-shirt and maybe he thought I was just some weird fan. I don't know. If he's going to go out in the casino, in the public, after a show, he's going to see fans. SO GET OVER IT DAVY!!!

It dawned on me today that, a while back, I stated that Capitol Records hadn't had a hit in years. Well, to quote Nez - dumb a** me. I forgot all about Radiohead! DOH!

And, as much as I still maintain the Mkees have a good thing going with Rhino, I think Virgin might be able to do something good with them. (tThe label has nothing to do with the stores, so this is not a shameless plug!) They are known as an "artist friendly" label, and they certainly have their share of hits across a broad spectrum (see the article on the front page of Billboard this week - that's where I got the idea).

I have taken my ginko and hope not to have any more factual lapses - forgive me??!!!

wonderful post! Thanks for the input. I enjoy reading folks opinions on these rather inane topics. I gather from reading your comments that you feel the Monkees as a group benifitted more from the liason than Mike did? or do you think it was more of a mutual benifit? Personally I think your right, Mike would have some success as a singer/songwriter, and perhaps David Jones as some sort of personality But as talented as Micky and Peter were I wonder if they would have acheived the succes and fame they enjoyed because of the Monkees? Well Micky maybe if he started pursuing his singing career more seriously but Peter sort of makes me think of a floater, someone who could take it or leave it. any other opinions on this subject?

so true so true. I can't even imagine anyone else but Mike, Davy peter and Micky as the Monkees. I mean imagine like Bob Denver in the Micky character. Yuck! Whatever the reasons for those particular young men to be picked, they certainly clicked as a group.

I also have to add my two cents about the Wolf Trap show. I think this was my 8th Monkees show and while I don't think it was the best SHOW I'd seen (that would be when they'd just returned from Europe with Mike and had Micky playing drums on about half of the show's songs), I do think this was the best PERFOMANCE I'd ever seen by them. All three were in fine voice, the large stage enabled them to get around a little more and they seemed to honestly enjoy being up there with each other. At the show I found myself saying to myself, "These guys STILL do it for me like nobody else."

Yeah, that's pretty low. I wondered about that myself. Fortunately I didn't get that here in Michigan, so I didn't have any false hopes. Although.....if I did have reason to believe that Nez was joining them, I just may have flown out there to catch it. That is...if I could find someone who would actually be willing to go with me!!!!!

Re: I no longer Like Davy

Hi,

With all do respect perhaps you were the one being rude. Davy does not have to be on at all times. He's human and perhaps he wanted to go to the bar and have a drink after the show. Davy does not have to be on at all times. I've met Davy three time and all three times he has been extremely nice to me. I met him on this tour after a show with Micky and Peter and all 3 guys were extremely nice. The key to this as with my other 2 meetings with Davy was they were all after shows where they were expected to be on. Davy does not have to be "on" after a show when he's hanging out by a bar.He took a photo with you and he didn't have to do that. As for what he did later with fans perhaps that was after his drink when he relaxed a little bit and was in the mood to be on again even though he didn't have to be.

Raleigh/Cary "Regency Park" 7/24

From: Arjuna

Comments

Regency Park - outdoor amphitheatre (stage designed for symphony orchestra). No rain, so we got the full show. (I was in the heroic outdoor crowd at the Cleveland rain/thunder/lightning show...)

References below are to my Clearwater opening night review way back when...

Tues - 7/23: The show was tight. The banter is less rambling. They played straight through for about two hours, no intermission. They still appear to be having fun. Energy was great. Davy is hoarse. Davy's Broadway set is shortened. Mickey's Hendrix tribute is gone. "Shades of Gray" is gone. "It's nice to be with you" (title?) is gone. The accoustic set ("What am I doin hangin round") is gone, and that is a loss, indeed. It was my favorite moment on opening night; a wonderful Kingston Trio/CSN flavor...

The "boy band" Natural was not on the bill, and that was no loss at all (imho)...

The backup band is much stronger, and the sound mix has improved. The lead guitarist was terrific (is this the same guy?) I think everybody agrees the female sax player is superb.

In general, EVERYBODY seems to leave these concerts stunned by the completely satisfying musicianship and showmanship. This is a great evening's entertainment by any measure. Still seems like a private club though - tried conveying your experience to the uninitiated? ...So where is the television exposure?

From: Dan Lafferty

Comments

Ha. Yeah, good points. My favorite stays pretty consistent, though. Although I typically have to say "my favorite not counting Mike songs". His are so separate from the mainstream songs, so "stand-alone", that I can't lump them in with the rest. "Your Auntie Grizelda" is my fave Monkee song. But for Mike songs....either "Good Clean Fun" or "Nine Times Blue".

I know David the man the monkee off the stage. He is one of the nicest giving people out there. When David is off the stage he does not owe anyone a thing. By the kindness of his heart he did give this person a autograph and posed for a picture while he was at the bar during his OFF TIME. What else did this person expect? He was also tired and just wanted to hang out with the boys. Maybe the other people that he was talking to and signing autographs said something to him to make him laugh. If you no longer want to be his fan then don't. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU TRY just TRY to ask Peter Tork for an autograph once he is off the stage.

I'm 42. I've loved the Monkees since I was 8 years old and of course had a big old crush on Davy way back then. I have since outgrown the crush but still enjoy him as a performer. I have no favorite Monkee as so many people do. I particularly enjoy Mike's music but almost view it as a seperate or guest appearance on the albums. It almost comes as a shock to me when I hear him do any kind of background vocals on other Monkee songs. I think my favorite singer for his voice and style would have to be Micky. He is so versatile. I hail from the Southerntier of NY just 3 miles from the PA border where the deer and black bear feast upon the raspberries in my back yard! welcome to the board Dan!

I can't find this thread right now, but Suzanne's reply was right on.

If memory serves me, a third Monkees season would have been before Laugh In or Sonny & Cher's show. The Smothers Brothers came and went several times (they kept getting kicked off the air for being too controversial - '60's network TV was not very progrssive over all, and there was no cable. I've often thought the Smothers Brothers thing may be why the POB didn't want to even discuss changing the third season format.)

Speaking of which, I was wondering if anybody had heard of a show that was on in '63-64 entitled "That Was the Week that Was". It features various folk and comedy performers, and aside from doing their usual bits, they did music and skits that commented on the social and political happenings of that particular week. It got kicked off the air for being too controversial, but I remember their show the week after the Kennedy assassination in particular - very moving.

I never said Rhino is not a good place for the Monkees. Rhino is the only label that UNDERSTANDS The Monkees and their fans. The only problem is Rhino does not have the money or the players to promote like the majors do.

Speaking of Virgin, The Beach Boys along with Brian Wilson were close to signing a record deal back in the mid 90s. Vigin was going to give The Beach Boys anything they wanted as long as Brian produced. They didn't care what the out come was going to be, they just wanted the guys to record with Brian once more. Brian didn't want to do it..

Don't be too hard on yourself or Davy-don't take it personally. I met Davy in New Jersey at Rowan University when he toured with the Brady Bunch-he signed autographs after the show. He looked beat and seemed really tired. I took pics with him & my Monkees concert buddy and she took one with me and Davy. I was really disappointed that in the pics he looked like he could have cared less-then I realized that he can't be "on" all the time and I can't controll the way the pics turn out. It was likely just my dumb luck that it turned out that way! He was nice enough though. I also was at AC on 7/21 for that concert-now I wish I hung around the bar that night for a new picture!

I never said Rhino has not been good for The Monkees. Rhino is the best label for The Monkees only because they understand their fans. My main point was that Rhino does not have the money or players to promote a new Monkees album like the majors would have. Not sure if that is good or bad..

As for Virgin, The Beach Boys along with Brian Wilson were very close in signing with the label back in the mid 90s. Virgin were willing to do anything for the band as long as they let Brian produce. Brian decided to do a solo album instead.

I'm going to go and disagree with the idea that Mike's songs are so holier than thou that they are beyond reproach and don't deserve to be listened next to a Monkees song. I mean, Mike's songs are good, some are great, but they certainly are listenable next to mostly any other Monkees track, besides the obvious lemons like "The Day We Fall in Love" or "Penny Music."

Does everyone believe "Writing Wrongs", "Magnolia Simms" and "Never Tell a Woman Yes" are better songs than "Randy Scouse Git" (Micky's own), "For Pete's Sake" (Peter's own) or even "You and I ('69)" (Davy's co-composition)????

I guess I just am not into elevating Mike over the other guys. I think if he had never been a Monkee, he probably would have achieved some success in some medium, however, never to the heights he did with the Monkees. No way! If Mike was such a genius songwriter/performer, his solo albums in the '70s would have set the charts on fire, something they certainly did not. Or, since commerical sales doesn't always denote quality, it would have been Mike credited today with the creation of country rock and not, say, the Eagles.

At the beginning of the thread, yes you were all talking about comparisons of the Monkees and the Bee Gees. Now I've been reading "what song does Maurice sing?" and "do you have the new Bee Gees album" or whatever. No mention of the Monkees - which is what this board is all about. To Erica and Tammy, I really dislike giving out bad news, but more than likely Micky will be appearing at The Monkees concert and not the Teen Idols concert.

That happened to me back in May. I drove three hours one way; to buy my tickets to see Micky, in the Teen Idol tour. The concert was set for June 8th. in Sutton's Bay, MI. Tickets went on sale May 5th. I got there to buy my tickets and was told that Micky had cancelled his portion of the concert...I knew he would; if the Monkees toured this Summer. Do not go by Pollstar information. Because, the Teen Idol tour will still be in RI, so Pollstar will not take Micky off the list until they are notified differently. In fact, I was the one that notified Pollstar that Micky had cancelled out of the June date, I was suppose to attend. That following Monday they took him off. All I can say is call the venue the day before you buy the tickets. You may have to even wait until the day you actually buy the tickets, to find out if he will still be appearing. I personally was bummed that I didn't get to see Micky, but I understood. I did however get to see him with The Monkees in Sterling Heights in June. I'm still hopeful that I will get to see one of his solo shows someday. Good Luck ladies!

WOW, Jennie, you sold me--I'll have to look for this one. I think it's great that there are so many people on this board who know so much about music and can point others to great stuff (even artists other than the Monkees). I don't see anything wrong with telling people to check out something new. And I've also noticed that the biggest critics are the ones that don't tell their names.

Florida Monkees Shows

I saw the Ft. Myers and the Sarasota shows. Both shows were great, but the sound was better at the Sarasota show. Davy sang Is you is or is you ain't in Ft. Myers and he did the Oliver medley in Sarasota. Since it was Natural's last show with the Monkees, the crew and back-up band shot them with silly string. Then, at the end of the Monkees' set they got payback while the band was still playing after the Monkees went off. It looked like a lot of fun. I wish I had gone to the Melbourne show!

It's also kind of an ironic humor that Peter mentions George Harrison as having written Long Title, because you know, George got into a lot of trouble in the early '70s for plagiarizing the tune "He's So Fine" for his song "My Sweet Lord."

From: "Davy Jones Forever" <davyslady@y...> Date: Sat Jul 28, 2001 12:56 am Subject: called & talked to Davy

hey everyone,

I just called David's cell phone, he answered and said that he was in a place where the signal wasn't too good and then I told him what I wanted with the interview (we couldn't hear eachother for the static) he told me that he was going to put his voice mail on and for me to call right back and leave him a detailed message about what I wanted and he would try and call back sometime when his phone was within range and wasn't so messed up. I did that and left a message for him saying that I would like to know if he would do an interview of about 10 questions give or take a few for DJ Forever and if so to call me when he wasn't busy. I will let you all know what happens. if there's anything that you are particularly interested in please send it to y E-Mail as that is all I will be checking within the next few days seeing as how I do not want to be online anymore than possible since I only have one phone line. im going to give him about a week or so. will let you all know more if anything happens!!!

even though all the static he still sounded SEXY!!!! and his voice message is even better, it just tells you where he is and where he will be heading within the next few days and then gives you the option of ending the call or leaving a message. I thought that was

really cool.

I'm 42 (can pass for younger) and I live in a suburb of Dallas. I will be vacationing in New Mexico this summer, so if I see Mike on the streets of Santa Fe, I'll ask him if he shouldn't be ---- (wherever the Monkees are performing that day). Nah, I wouldn't do that. I HAVE seen Michael Murphey in Taos, though, that was a thrill! Oh,yeah, my favorite Monkee is Micky.

Saw the show in Sarasota on Sat 7/28 and as expected it was FAB!!! My review would sound pretty much like everyone else's. The show was almost as good as the one in March in Clearwater. That one I think was a bit longer and I missed the sit down part of the show this time and 'Shades of Gray' :( but still they ROCK!! It was nice to see Mary again and Deborah. Nice to meet you Jan, Marissa and Marcia (Marcia-Marcia)My friend Jan had never been to one before and she was "pleasantly surprised". Unfortunately she had a real bad headache during the whole show so we didn't hang around outside after. Guys, tell me I didn't miss anything!!! Did they come out? Shari

It's funny you should mention this episode, because just yesterday, my kids and I watched the video of this one. One of my children (don't want to embarrass them) and I had tears in our eyes after Mike's speech. I hadn't seen this one in a while, so it was like watching for the first time again. This really was one of the more literate scripts that they did (a spoof of The Devil and Daniel Webster).

Okay, You guys are not going to believe this, but I actually got a Backstage Pass! I was in the very front row, and the drummer, gave me and this girl a drum stick and slipped us both a pass. I am still in total shock! I just posted some(not all, yet) of my pictures on my site <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/retro/jam/">www.angelfire.com/retro/jam</a> What a concert! We even camcorded some of the songs...I was all worried about security before the show, and not once did I see a security guard! I cannot stress this enough, but I am sooooo in Love with the 3 horn players. Greg(one w/ the curly hair) remembered me from March! He is definitely my favorite. I talked to him a lot before the concert, and what a nice guy. I made the horn players sea shell necklaces, and Greg wore his the rest of the night.*Ahhhhh* I'm so in Love! If anybody is going to any of the later shows in August, and talks to the horn players, I would really like to know if he still has his necklace. hehehe...Okay, so much happened at this concert that I am just too tired to post it all right now. Hi everybody! I'm 34 and have been a fan since I was 19. I actually saw them during their 20th anniversary tour - went to the convention in L.A. where Micky and Davy came and answered our questions! (We wrote our questions down on cards) and Micky answered mine!!!! I have this convention on VHS video. The picture isn't 100% great, but still a prized possesion of mine. (I was 19 at the time of this convention.) Over the years I have sorta faded away from the Monkeemania until two weeks ago when they came to Lincoln. I decided to go more out of curiosity. Since then, my Monkee-madness has been rejuvenated and I am so eager to meet new friends. If anyone wants to write me, I would love to hear from you! staceyhelget@netzero.net

Go Monkees!!! And I hope all you "younger" generation folks have as much fun as I did! They are wonderful! And so are all of us fans! :)

That's always been one of my favorite episodes too! It was actually a little scary in parts, but Micky provided comic relief. The "sell your soul to the devil in exchange for musical fame" idea has been around in music at least since bluesmen like Robert Johnson in the 1930's. Later it resurfaced with bands like Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest. I like that the Monkees dealt with the issue on their show with hilarious and moving results.

Off the top of my head, Maurice sang lead on Closer Than Close, It's My Neighborhood, Omega Man (an Alan Parsons-sounding tune from '93), a bit of the '60s/'70s stuff, but Barry pretty much did all the "disco" hits. Maurice is much like the PETER of the group -- a good lead singer who's primarily a musician/back-up singer. (There -- another comparison!)

I am a older fan in my mid 40-s look very good people say I look 10 years younger. I get hit on by younger men all the time. I love it. I am divorced lived my life and I am not looking for any type of relationship for the long run. I think now that we are in the year 2001 it works both ways. Some of us older women adore younger men. I like them 30 and up. We are experienced know how to please a man and can teach even the old men like the Monkees a few things. I believe the Monkees, like other older men have this ego thing going and being with younger women just to play around with makes them feel younger. But it never lasts. Look at Peter and David their relationships they went down the drain because their younger girlfriends wanted something more like marriage. These men have been there and done it. As for us older women we know what we want and marriage is not one of them. I think what works for the older men works for us older women and we can give the younger girls a run for their money because we can TALK and have a interesting conversation with these older men. As long as everyone is happy that is all that counts. Age does matter if you are with an older man and he has been divorced 2 or 3 times and he no longer wants to get married then the younger women have to go elsewhere.

Gang,

You have to check out this review page for the works of Mike Nesmith. It's funny as hell!!! Hey Hey He’s A Pompous Ass

Here are some samples

The Wichita Train Whistle Sings

Well, you won’t get anywhere near as much out of them as the true Papa Ness fan, because presented like this, they all kinda sound the same. I think he was trying to create a Dixieland Jazz feel with the songs, but it sounds more like a poorly trained high school marching band (and banjo) demolishing a bunch of previously recognizable tunes. Rollicking, blowy, fun, usually out of tune and occasionally meandering so far away from interestingness, you wonder if Mike left the studio to take a poop or something.

And The Hits Just Keep On Coming

Certainly they are the two highlights of the Moody Blues songwriting combo, but for some reason without the rest of the band, they’re just BLAND. Still, it’s a darn treat to be able to enjoy an entire Nike Mesmith album without happening across one of those atrocious bebop bouncy fast-moving dirtcrap chuggers.

The Prison

In fact, the CD is billed as "a book with a soundtrack." I skimmed the book - it appears to be some dipshit little allegory about escaping from prison and realizing that freedom is scarier than imprisonment or some such puerile De La Vega-esque crap. But the music is nice!

The Garden

Oh yay! It’s another book from the literary genius who penned “Papa Gene’s Blues”! This one doesn’t even have lyrics. You’re just supposed to treat the instrumental music as a soundtrack to the little book that comes with it.

Go check it out

I don't care much for those Nez songs you mentioned Mark. I do think, as far as songs go, Randy and Pete's Sake are better songs. But you have to admit, Mike is a better songwriter and those 3 songs you listed may not be the most catchy of hooks, but the lyrical content is far above anything Davy, Micky, or Peter could write. The lyrical content of "Never Tell a Woman Yes" is almost of Dylan stature. I mean Christ, the song has you dizzy by the time that twist comes at the end.

As far as the lyrics go, I think Micky's songs are probably the closet of equal quality to Mikes. Davy writes lyrics anyone could write, most of "You and I" was written by Chadwick, not Davy. Peter's are sometimes too simple (I'm Getting In, Run Away From Life), but Peter DOES write some good songs (all you Tork fans stand back), not saying that is what makes a song bad, I just feel Mike's chord voicing and lyrics are quite unique. I don't like everything he writes, but he's proven he can write in more then one type of genre, be it folk, pop, country, rock, new wave or new age. Mike has certainly grown as a songwriter. He WAS the best songwriter of the four guys, his track record has proven that. He already had a million seller before he joined The Monkees and he had them when he left The Monkees.

I actually do and always will credit Mike with the creation of country rock, or at least...if not him personally, then the situation that he was in. A country songwriter in a pop band....country rock was the inevitable creative compromise.

I do have to stick with him being a far greater talent than any of the others. His were creations all their own, uninfluenced by the Beatles or any other popular band of the time. There was nothing else like "St. Matthew" or even "Sweet Young Thing", while, even songs as good as the ones you mention were clearly responses to other bands of the time.

I'm not sure anyone said that Mike's songs were too good to stand next to the other Monkees songs. It's simply that there is a clear difference. You can remove Mike's songs and you still have a solid group of great songs. But on the other hand, Mike's songs alone are a solid group of songs as well. And these were HIS creations, whereas, much as I hate to say it...the majority of the rest of the really great songs were written by non-Monkees. Before anyone jumps at that, understand that I said "the majority". Clearly there were exceptions, such as "Randy Scouse Git" and "For Pete's Sake", but these were occasional gems. Mike was constantly cranking out brilliant pieces for each album.

Chris what was the name of the song that Mike did before the Monkees that was a million dollar seller? I knew he had recorded before the Monkees but for some reason I thought he was basically an unknown prior to joining the Monkees. Got my hit's keep coming Cd today am enjoying it, husband really likes it. Of course he's 11 years older than I and I think he likes Nez's songs best. At least those are the songs he knows some of the words to when I force him to listen to my Monkee tapes in the car.

Can we assume at this point that there will be no West Coast portion of the summer tour? It's nearing July now and there are no dates for any place out West, which were supposed to take place in August.

Wishful thinking here, but could it be true that an album is being recorded instead of going out West in August? Hmmmmm, nah! ;-) We'll see.

While at the pool today (when there was a crack of sunshine for a brief moment - it has been raining almost every day) a group of friends and I were listening to the radio passing the time. It occurred to me that it would be nice if the fans would call in their favorite Monkees song to their local stations. I had my cell phone with me and we all took turns calling in. Four out of Five requests were played for us. It was great! The DJ must of been a Monkees' fan also. He mentioned he was getting quite a few requests for the Monkees today. I guess they keep track of those requests?

Any how, contact your local stations and get your requests in. It's fun and it supports the Monkees and their tour!

I'm a fan who sees the TV characters as distinctly different from the real life Monkees, and I used to call them "the TV character Monkees" to differentiate, but in the last several months, I've started using the term TeleMonkees with my friends, which is much catchier. It's after another TV quartet who luv each other very much, the TeleTubbies. I guess the extent to which you see the TV characters as separate from the same-named actors who played them depends on how you interpret the characters. I know from scanning Monkee fanfic lately that other fans see the TeleMonkees a lot differently than I do! I don't want to get into how I see them (it's pretty bizarre and I know not what the people behind the show had in mind), but I think it works positively all around to diffentiate between character and actor. After all, as sweet and lovable as TV Peter is is, I'm sure real life Peter Tork enjoys being recognized as a much more learned man than his naive TV character.

Hi all,

I just finished listening to some of my Monkees CDs and was wondering if anyone likes any alternate versions of the Monkees' songs as opposed to the released versions. For example, I like "Can You Dig It?" with Peter on lead vocals as opposed to Micky. I also like Mike's lead vocals on "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" as opposed to Micky's lead vocals. Any thoughts?

You're right about Differant Drum, but he had a publishing deal anyway and 2 songs recorded outside his Monkees work. The only reason the other 3 began to write was because Mike was making so much more money then they were. So it wasn't such a creative origin Micky , Davy and Peter started to write (Peter did have a hand in writing Pete's Sake before The Monkees BTW), it was greed..

Dan,

This is completely how I feel. You could put all of Mike's song on one cd set and it would be an incredable listen as well as an creative look at one of the under-rated artists of all time. I know all the top-heavy-mojos on the Beach Boys SMiLE brd think Nesmith is GOD LOL...

But anyway, let's take all the songs the other three Monkees wrote put them on a CD, then take the same amount of songs Nesmith wrote and put them on a CD. Then we can do a side by side comparing.. I don't know, "If I knew", "Rosemarie", " Changes" and "Merry Go Around" up against "St, Matthew", "While I Cry", "Listen To The Band" and "Circle Sky" ?

Did you ever notice that on the 4th disc of the Music Box almost every other song is a Nesmith song. That disc is my fave of the whole set..could it be because...nah...

Who ever thought of putting the word "Prism" in a song anyway...

The main reason Mike was cranking out good stuff each album is because he was a songwriter first..there is a difference. Just because Ringo Starr can play 3 chords on the guitar, and John and Paul encourage him to write a song or two, does not make him a GREAT SONGWRITER. Yeah he can write one "Octopus's Garden" in his life but he's a hell of a long way from a Lennon/McCartney.

Barry,

What a cool post..sure I like some alt. versions better then the original versions that made it on the albums. I like the TV version of "I'll Be Back Up On My Feet" better then the over produced version on "Birds..." I don't like much of the production work Jeff Barry did, but this one has a nice pop feeling, and Micky's vocal is cool.

I like the folk rock version of "I Wanna Be Free". I hate the slow version found on "The Monkees". The mix found of the former on "Music Box" is the best!

I like the alt vocal version of "Circle Sky" better then the vocal on "Head".

I'm a toss up over the version of "And You Just May Be The One" found on ML2 and the "HQ" version. Both are too cool..

I do love Micky's version of "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" over Mike's version. It's my fave Monkees record! Only Micky Dolenz could sing that song. It's in a differant key by the way then Mikes.

I'll go for Micky's vocal on "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" over Mike's vocal. Like Chris, this is my favorite Monkees song (tied with "PVS").

I prefer Micky's lead on "Can You Dig It" much more than Peter's. It's very hard for me to go against Micky as the lead singer. His voice is just that good.

As for some of the others, I basically agree with Chris. I'd take the fast version of "I Wanna Be Free" any day, and the alt version of "Circle Sky" found on ML3 is superior to the studio version on the HEAD soundtrack.

As for "I'll Be Back Up on My Feet", that's a tough one for me. I like both versions in their own way. I do prefer, however, the HEADQUARTERS version of "You Just May Be The One."

I prefer the BIRDS version of "Valleri" over the original take (but not by much!). Even the alt version of "Hold On Girl" from ML2 is superior to the MORE OF version in my opinion.

How about "Goin' Down"?? The alt version found on PISCES is way superior than the single version, I think! Take another close listen. There's just a little more soul in Micky's voice on the alt take. I'll also go for the alt version of "Nine Times Blue" over the released take. And of course, the original "Mommy and Daddy" beats the PRESENT version hands down.

I don't know if anyone remembers who Paul Mazursky is, but he was a writer on the Monkees TV show. He wrote and starred in the pilot episode (he was the reporter on the street). Anyway, I don't know if anyone watches the HBO series The Sopranos (I am die hard fan of that too!), but if you watch the series he played a character on there called Sunshine. On the next to the last episode of the third season, his character ends up getting shot in a hold up of a cardgame done by Jackie Aprile, Jr. (You have to watch the show from practically the beginning to know what I am talking about.) If you want to find out more, go to hbo.com and click on The Sopranos. Then click on the episode guide and look for season three. Believe me, I was shocked when I saw his name in ending credits!

Mark,

I have a question for you. This has bugged me since 1989,it concerns the version of Valeri (spelled this way) on Davy's "Incrediable" tape. That tape was recorded using many of the same backing musicians from the 86 tour. I swear, in my mind, I can hear Micky singing backing vocals on this version. Please let me out of this 12 year old headache..do you hear him too or am I just outta my head?

BTW, doesn't Davy just have the most awful looking tape/ cd covers?

Good calls, Chris. As a matter of fact, I HAVE made a disc of Nesmith songs and a separate disc of non-Mike songs. Except, I wasn't as strict as you suggest. I didn't limit either disc to songs that Mike himself or the others had written. That is...I included on the Mike disc great songs that he didn't write himself, but sang. And on my other disc, I included basically all my favorite Monkees songs that Mike didn't sing. I just couldn't make a disc of songs written by the other three. There simply aren't enough quality ones to warrant it.

I'm 15 and have been a Monkees fan for about four years now. On Friday night 2 of my friends spent the night. My first attempt to turn them onto the Monkees failed when I showed the only video of the show I have and they said they would fall asleep because it was so boring and stupid so about half way through the second episode we turned it off. But then the next morning I turned on the Monkees Music Box while I was getting dressed and we ended up listening to cds 2,3, and part of 4. They were actually dancing around to the music and my friend Danielle really liked it. She said their show was stupid but their music was cool. That afternoon she actually kept saying "The Monkees are cool." I thought she was joking at first, but she wasn't. She's seen pics of Davy before but now she said that she probably would have been a big "groupie" of Davy because he was really cute. She even started reading the section on Davy in my Monkees book. I just thought that was funny. Anyway, bye.

I Wanna Be Free--the "fast" one

The Girl I Knew Somewhere--Micky's version

I was faithfully glued to the T.V. every week to watch the Monkees in the 60's. Of course we didn't have computers back then and the only way you got to see or hear anything about your favorite groups was T.V., Radio and Teen Mags, and then you only knew what they wanted you to know whether it was true or not. for instance Davy's marriage and first daughter was kept a secret for a long while.
