Grammy Award wining artist Michael Nesmith is an accomplished songwriter, musician, actor, home video pioneer, film producer and scriptwriter, novelist, businessman and philanthropist. His phenomenal success in the television show The Monkees was just the beginning of his prolific and innovative music and entertainment career, one that continues to shake our pop landscape. Nesmith has recorded a dozen or so reputable folk and country-rock records as a solo artist, masterminded the cult film staple Repo Man, won the first-ever Video Grammy, and written a fantastical novel. Oh yeah, somewhere in the middle of all of this he had the foresight to conceive MTV.

“For a time I thought Rays had come together differently than any other project I had worked on, until it dawned on me all the various works I had been involved in had happened the same way and doing Rays was simply the first time I had seen it. Rays was my own personal Copernican Shift. For years Rays laid around in bits and pieces, and there were long periods when I would put them all away, like disparate parts of disparate building blocks. As if one was a recipe, another was a blueprint, another was a map. I couldn’t see how they fit together. I kept going, as much for not having anything else to do as for the curiosity of how it would all turn out, but I did keep going, and I’m glad I did. It was when I was putting on the horn parts, dreaming of Memphis and Stax Volt, that it all came together. It was as if I had come into the garage one evening, and was looking at the detritus of a failed effort laying all over the floor, when suddenly there was this array, a kind of order to it that I had never imagined. That was exciting. It felt new, and gave me the inspiration I needed to finish. This after four years of wandering in darkness --- which actually happened to be one of the lines from Rays. I had always imagined “emergence” as the gradual appearing of something that already exists but was just unseen. Rays was the first time I ever actually saw that happen. And now that I’ve seen it I am aware that all the past works have happened the same way.” – Michael Nesmith

Michael Nesmith
Robert Michael Nesmith was born December 30, 1942 in Houston, Texas. He moved from his native Texas to California; intent on breaking into show business. He began to write songs and perform them at live venues around Los Angeles. Spotting an ad calling for four musicians to act in a TV series, he landed a leading role in The Monkees. that quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, and catapulted the young Nesmith to stardom. While in The Monkees, Nesmith continued to write and sing his own songs. He received critical and commercial acclaim for his songs Some of Shelly’s Blues and Different Drum, a 1967 US Top 20 hit for Linda Ronstadt. His job in the television show also gave him the opportunity to write and produce songs for the show. But the country-tinged music he did for the show was pretty experimental for television. Nesmith left The Monkees in 1969 to form The First National Band. Pioneer of the genre later to be dubbed country rock, he released a series of albums for RCA. Magnetic South, the 1970 debut LP included the Top 30 single Joanne, followed by Loose Salute and 1971’s Nevada Fighter. When The First National Band dissolved that same year, Nesmith formed The Second National Band Although he released only one album, 1972’s Tantamount To Treason Volume One, he continued to refine the country/rock sound that was to influence a new breed of artists such as Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Poco, The Flying Burrito Bros. and New Riders of The Purple Sage. Other Michael Nesmith albums were quick to follow: And The Hits Just Keep On Comin’, and Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash all distributed by RCA.

Nesmith left RCA to launch his own communications company, Pacific Arts Corporation. The Prison, an ambitious multi-media book/record combination, was the corporation’s first release in 1975. This was followed in 1976 by the LP From A Radio Engine To A Photon Wing and featured the hit single Rio. He created a video for Rio which is considered by many to be the first music video, because it developed a new film language, marrying music to images. (The Rio video is in the permanent collection at MOMA.) With the album Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma, Nesmith included the song Cruisin and he made a video for it as well. Cruisin possessed a recitative style that nobody besides maybe Bob Dylan was doing at the time. Nesmith included both Rio and Cruisin in an hour long landmark video called Elephant Parts, a kind of music and comedy combination come to life in a single, long form format. NARAS loved it but didn’t have a Grammy category for it, so they created a Best Video category for it that year and Elephant Parts won the first Grammy for Best Video.

Nesmith went on tour performing behind the success of the single Rio. While appearing in Australia, he noted an interest in Top 40 television shows that played video clips of performing artists. Back in the states, Nesmith put together a half-hour prototype Top 40 show called Popclips. He sold it to Warner Brothers/Amex and Nesmith produced the first shows and so became the creator of the idea for what eventually became MTV.

Between Elephant Parts and Television Parts, Nesmith co-wrote, produced and scored the film Timerider and was the producer of Repoman, Tapeheads, and Square Dance. In 1989, Michael Nesmith and The Monkees were presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Nesmith returned to his music and assembled a compilation of unreleased tracks and selected cuts from his later LP’s entitled The Newer Stuff. In late 1991, Rhino Records released another CD collection from his earlier LP’s entitled, fittingly, The Older Stuff: The Best of Michael Nesmith (1970-73). In September of 1992, Michael Nesmith launched his independent record label, Pacific Arts Audio, with the release of his long awaited ...tropical campfires... which Nesmith fans consider to be one of his best works.

In addition to releasing his own work, Nesmith signed The Hellecasters and released two albums by them, Return Of The Hellecasters and Escape from Hollywood. In just under a years time, The Hellecasters won three awards for 1993; "Best Overall Guitar LP" & "Best Country LP" in the prestigious Guitar Player Magazine’s readers poll, and "Top 2 Roots LP" in Guitar World Magazine.

The Garden was released in September of 1994. This outstanding multi-media package was nominated for a Grammy Award in the new age category. It is the second part of a work Nesmith started in 1974 entitled The Prison. Like The Prison, The Garden is a book and music designed to be experienced simultaneously.

Since 1990, Nesmith has hosted the Council on Ideas, a gathering of intellectuals from different fields who are asked to brainstorm solutions to world problems. From the early 90’s through 2004 he served as a member of the board of trustees of the American Film institute, and was a nominating member of the AFI Awards. He is currently President and chairman of the board of trustees of the Gihon Foundation. His first novel The Long Sandy Hair Of Neftoon Zamora was released by St Martins Press in December of 1998. Nilsson documentary due early next year

By Katie Hasty Fri Dec 16, 6:02 AM ET

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A documentary focusing on the life and career of late singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson will be released next year.
"Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him?)" features interviews with Yoko Ono, Randy Newman, Micky Dolenz, Eric Idle, the Smothers Brothers, Brian Wilson and Robin Williams, as well as home videos, portions of Nilsson's recently discovered oral autobiography, and more than 60 songs.

Set to premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 4, the film is directed by John Scheinfeld. His LSL Prods banner is in post-production on the documentary "U.S. vs. John Lennon," also due in 2006. Details regarding domestic distribution for "Nilsson" have yet to be nailed down.

Nilsson is perhaps best known for his 1969 hit "Everybody's Talkin'," which served as the theme song for the film "Midnight Cowboy." He also wrote Three Dog Night's classic "One" and scored a No. 1 pop hit in 1971 with "Without You," written by Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tom Evans.

But after years of hard partying in Los Angeles (including a famous incident when he and John Lennon were ejected from a club for heckling the Smothers Brothers), Nilsson damaged his voice and was never subsequently able to match his earlier achievements. He died of a heart attack in 1994, aged 52.

This just in from The Big Cartoon Forum:

Ebullient Mexican-American comedic actor Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez,
who voiced several 1960s Speedy Gonzales cartoons from DePatie-
Freleng Enterprises, died February 6 at 80.

He died of natural causes at his Culver City, California home, his
grandson, actor Clifton Collins Jr., told the Los Angeles Times.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at Holy Cross Catholic
Cemetery in Culver City.

A Texas native, Gonzalez Gonzalez appeared in dozens of movies,
including The High and the Mighty and Rio Bravo. He frequently was
the "comic relief" in Westerns, playing a Mexican in a service job,
such as a barber or bartender.

In various incarnations of the live-action TV series Disneyland, he
portrayed Bandido (as Pedro Gonzales) in The Adventures of Bullwhip
Griffin (1971) and the Mexican Driver (as Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez)
in The Love Bug (1979). He was also featured in the EPCOT Mexico
ride at Disney World.

The diminutive Gonzalez Gonzalez came to fame in 1953, when
quizmaster Groucho Marx had him as a guest on You Bet Your Life.
Gonzalez Gonzalez stole the show, singing part of "El Rancho
Grande," showing off comedic dance skills and mugging wildly for the
camera.

Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez is survived by his wife of 62 years,
Leandra; son Ramiro; daughters Yolanda and Rosie; seven
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother Jose Gonzales-
Gonzales, also an actor.

Of course, we Monkees fans will cherish the memory of Gonzalez
Gonzalez in his guest role as Lupe the mechanic in Episode No. 33 of
The Monkees TV series, "It's A Nice Place To Visit...", its second-
season debut.

To absent friends...

The February 2006 issue of the British magazine UNCUT has a cover
feature on that watershed year in pop culture, 1966.

There are several Monkee mentions in both the TV and album
categories. The debut album is listed as #16 of "The 20 Best Albums
of 1966":

"America's fabricated four cleverly aped the Beatles' musical style
and zany movie antics to become TV's first pop idols."

And in the lead paragraph of the feature:

"There was watercooler TV before watercoolers even existed: The
Monkees, Dangerman, The Saint and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. all had us
glued to the box."

Hmmm...arguably, Ricky Nelson was a pop idol created by TV, although
he was also created by Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. And I kind of
remember watercoolers being mentioned here in New York when I was a
child. Maybe in London the water in the coolers was warm, like the
beer? ;-)

But it's a really cool issue anyway, worth picking up where you can
find it:

According to the Saturday March 19th NY Daily News:

It turns out "Monk" is a Monkees fan. USA Network star Tony Shalhoub
was celebrating his birthday last week at the Palm West restaurant,
where by chance former Monkees band-member Micky Dolenz was also
dining. Dolenz - who just launched his own film company, Independent
Entertainment - accepted an invitation to appear on Shalhoub's hit
show, about a detective with OCD. "Things like this always happen
here," quipped major-domo Chris Gilman.

A small, recent photo of Micky appeared next to this writeup.

He's the Monkee in the wool cap. But Nesmith is more than a pop-culture icon. He's built impeccable credentials as a media visionary. In the 1980s, Nesmith invented MTV, helped pioneer the home-video revolution, won a Grammy for his music video Elephant Parts and produced the cult films Repo Man and Tapeheads. Throughout the 1990s he gathered deep thinkers at his Santa Fe, New Mexico, ranch to participate in his solutions-oriented conference, Council on Ideas. And in 1998, Nesmith published his acclaimed novel The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora on the web. Now, it's back to songwriting. After a five-year hiatus, Nesmith, who Rolling Stone said writes "the greatest music never heard," has released Rays, an atmospheric, eclectic CD. He spoke with Wired News from his studio in Monterey, California. Wired News: The release strategy for Rays seems inverted -- first on iTunes and later in the big-box stores. Michael Nesmith: Ten or 15 years ago, I got hip to the net and thought it could be a great one-to-one way to sell things. I wrote Neftoon Zamora as a hypertext novel. Back then, the only browser was Mosaic. From there, everything began to line up.... Online delivery started up. MP3 scared me for a while, because I believe in intellectual property rights. But when iTunes and Rhapsody arrived, transaction bases with users paying for stuff, it made sense to reverse the distribution sequence. So instead of going after radio airplay and trying getting into the big boxes and then, maybe, giving the crumbs to the downloaders, I thought, I'll go with the downloaders first.... It wasn't some visionary hit. I was just swept along in the current of events. WN: How different would your career have looked if MySpace had been around in the '60s? Nesmith: When I struck out on my own, my idea was to break a chain ... (of) doing the same thing that my family had done and ending up in a business I didn't want to be in. If opportunities like MySpace had been available then, I would have jumped that way. But as it worked out ... I went the traditional television avenue. WN: Do all of these digital opportunities change the nature of music? Nesmith: Yeah, they do. They significantly change it. You have to think in different ways about what a song is. When the carrier is a 45, one of those big-hole vinyl LPs, you can only get so much data on there, maybe 10 minutes. Radio airplay constrains it even further. So you ended up in the '50s and '60s with singles that were two-and-a-half or three minutes long. And you have these very simplified musical elements, just simple 1-4-5 turnarounds and other real easy-to-do things. When you get into these big sampler engines and computer-based sequencing, the world opens up to you.... You can explore deep musical ideas and play with theory in ways you weren't able to before. Forty years ago, maybe you played the piano, maybe you played the guitar. Or you wrote sheet music. But at the end of the day, if you came up with something, you couldn't render it beyond what you and a few friends could play. Now you can render something the size of a mountain, with hundreds of instruments and all sorts of explorations of harmonies and tonal centers and odd improvisations. WN: Do you get lost in the possibilities? It's not like going into the studio with a couple of guys and banging out some songs. Nesmith: That's an early discipline any artist learns. You don't get taken with the colors of paints that you've got. You've got to narrow it down. It's great to have all the possibilities, but it all starts with an idea. To sit there and hope something will happen is like dumping 400 gallons of paint on the floor and hoping a picture is going to emerge. It doesn't work that way. WN: You helped popularize music videos. I don't suppose you'll be doing a new one in support of Rays? Nesmith: No. Haven't planned it. I did music videos in the '70s and that was fun because it was the launch of the basis of it and I was discovering some really interesting principles that govern the form. But after that I lost interest. MTV took off and it became this maze, this massive amount of information. I don't want to contribute any more to that. WN: Now that indie musicians and filmmakers are selling direct to their fans -- sometimes hundreds of thousands of units -- what role can the corporate media play? Nesmith: I don't hold much hope for Warner Music Group or Sony being a player in the future.... The problem with those kind of companies is that they don't have any good way to add value anymore. For years, they'd support the artist in their nascent stages and get the goods to market. Those are old-time, Methuselean economics.... There are whole new businesses that will wander in and boot these guys out. WN: So we can write the obituaries? Nesmith: Those obituaries were written two decades ago. What you are seeing here is an inertial burn (laughs). WN: So what happens to the consumer? Nesmith: Well, its all to the good, I think.... It's a new personal freedom, new individualism. The individuals who come up with ideas can make perfectly good or even spectacular lives for themselves with just their own little shop. I'm certainly one of those guys. And there is a lot faster traffic than me out there. Has anybody ever put together a word that means producer and consumer at the same time? That's what's going to happen. We'll be both. We'll have the means of production and consumption under our own control. I can't imagine that being anything but good. +++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "robynapelt20002001" just got from monkeetalk.com that mickys photo is in people magazine in the usa now. Robert Russo, 42, pleaded guilty in February to a bill of information in Wood County Common Pleas Court charging him with criminal simulation, a fifth-degree felony. At his sentencing this week, Judge Reeve Kelsey placed him on community control sanctions for two years and ordered him to “not have any contact directly or indirectly with any online auction sites” and not conduct any Internet commerce. Russo also was ordered to complete 300 hours of community service, pay a $5,000 fine and court costs, and forfeit property seized by police. In a search of Russo’s Portside Circle apartment, authorities seized electronic audio copying equipment and about 1,000 compact discs. He sold more than $8,900 worth of copied CDs by The Monkees between August, 2000 and December, 2005, police said. http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060415/NEWS02/60415001/0/NEWS01 To purchase Monkees CD's, Videos and Collectable rare items, visit www.monkees.net The Monkees Alert list is moderated, meaning you cannot post directly to the list yourself. Thanks Jack Fichter Cape May County Herald (New Jersey) ++++++++++++++++++++++ Ex-Monkee Davy Jones saddles up for a 'normal' life By BILL DeYOUNG Scripps Howard News Service 02-MAY-06 INDIANTOWN, Fla. -- Davy Jones embraces the past and cherishes the present, but says his future doesn't include any more Monkees reunions. This year is the 40th anniversary of the created-for-television, pre-fab four, and Jones, at 60, says he's had enough _ especially after the last reunion, a '97 British tour that ended in acrimony. "I would not work with those guys again if my life depended on it," says Jones, who was born in Manchester, England, but has owned a home in this rural Florida town for 20 years. "I can't be responsible for their attitudes and the way they treat people. The way they talk." Jones is the subject of Wednesday's (May 3) episode of "Living in TV Land" (TV Land, 10 p.m. EDT). Jones says part of the bitterness from the last reunion came _ in his opinion _ because Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork _ and, to a lesser extent, Micky Dolenz _ think of themselves as rock stars, and not veterans of a popular 1960s sitcom about rock stars. The four rarely agree on anything. "Get over it, OK?" Jones laughs. "The Monkees is gonna be the Monkees forever and ever. It's going to be like the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges and the Bowery Boys." Jones performs about 100 solo shows every year and his set is chock-full of Monkees hits and Monkee-esque stage patter. "I've got friends that I've known for 40 years, and a lot of people that I don't know that talk to me as if they do know me," he says. "Which makes me feel good. I've touched a lot of people's lives. The Monkees touched a lot of people's lives, and I can't destroy that by going out with those guys and having bad attitudes around me." Jones' extended family may include millions of fans worldwide, but his inner circle is small. Twice divorced, he has four grown daughters and two grandsons _ and a stable full of the best pals a longtime horseman could ask for. Every morning at 6, Jones drives the 30 minutes from his home to exercise his 12 horses, groom them and clean out their stalls. As a youngster in Manchester, he aspired to become a jockey, and today several of his horses race at Florida tracks _ with someone younger in the saddle. He spends the summers at a ranch house in Pennsylvania (he also owns an estate in England and an apartment in Los Angeles). The horses make the journey, too. But, says Jones, what he craves is stability. Something normal. "I don't want to be Peter Pan all my life," he muses. He loves the fact the locals have gotten used to him turning up in restaurants and grocery stores. He has applied for American citizenship _ something he says he should've done years ago. "This is such a beautiful, amazing country; there are so many places you can go," Jones says. "This is where my loyalty lies now ... I want to be American. I've been here since 1962, and everything was given to me. So I want to die an American, 30 years from now." http://www.shns.com/shns/g_index2.cfm?action=detail&pk=PROFILE-05-02-06 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reviews ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Katherine McCabe" I haven't seen this posted yet so I would like to be the first to say that Peter came out and played on stage for two songs at Wildwood! It was an incredible experience to see them on stage together! The entire weekend was a blast, but the highlight was most certainly seeing Peter and Micky together. They sang For Pete's Sake, and then, Peter did Lucille. What a rush!! Thats all for me, Katherine +++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Joanna Parsons I must agree!! The fun started Friday night with a dance hosted by The Geeter himself, Jerry Blavat. If you are from the Philadelphia area you allready know who he is. If you are not from the area, you will remember him as the emcee of the band contest from episode #56, "Some Like it Lukewarm" Saturday during the day The 1910 Fruitgum Company and The Rip Cords performed. Then came Saturday night!!!! The Rip Cords performed again, followed by The Crystals, followed by The Grass Roots(who were great!), followed by Peter Noone(always an energetic, fun experience)....then Micky! Not only did he have Jerry Renino and Wayne Avers with him, but also Sandy Gennaro and Dave Alexander!! I knew we were in for a treat! If you have seen Micky solo lately you know he mentions the songwriters as he performs the songs. So, he says he wants to sing a song, but he has trouble "remembering the words" and "wished someone would help him". Suddenly, there was Peter! It was soooo cool. As Kathleen mentioned, they sang For Pete's Sake and Lucille. Peter and Micky signed autographs after the show. Might be the closest we get to a reunion....................... Sunday Peter was in North Wildwood at an ice cream shop called Cool Scoops. I got there early and about 15 of us were invited to sit in while Peter did a radio interview. The dj's name was Jimmy Jay, and he said the interview will be posted on the web page www.rewindshow.com - Be sure to look for it. When Peter was asked about the possibility of a 40th reunion tour he said that he wants to do it, Micky may be persuaded, but Davy is a definite NO! Jimmy Jay split us into four groups and we did the song Zilch. I don't know how we sounded, but we did our best! The Monkees tribute group The Missing Links were there. They arrived in the Monkee Mobile!!! Took my breath away when I saw that! They were pretty good. Peter joined them on stage for 4 or 5 songs. Just for Sunday the town renamed the street "Monkee Way". They also gave Peter a plaque commemorating The Monkees 40th anniversary. It was very nice. Sorry if this was a long post....I'm still on cloud nine! Joanna +++++++++++++++++++++ From: Laura OMG!!!! You guys should've stayed for the Missing Links concert yesterday in North Wildwood. Peter was there. The mayor of Wildwood gave him a plaque in honor of the Monkees 40th anniversary. The Monkeemobile was there. My friend Katherine, from MA, sold his merch. Peter jammed with the Missing Links for about 6 or 8 songs (those guys are REALLY great!!). The mayor re-named a portion of 12th Street in Wildwood, "MONKEE WAY". It was FREAKIN' INCREDIBLE!!!. Pics to follow (you KNOW I took a bunch). Peter was so sweet to me at the autograph table. Gave me a big hug and signed three things for me (More of the Monkees, '87 Tour Book, and a photo I bought there (old photo/young Peter - he had a stack for people who hadn't seen him before and needed something to autograph - I think Katherine sold out of the pics!). HE'S A BELIEVER By BARBARA HOFFMAN Micky Dolenz, erstwhile Monkee, hangs with the snow monkeys at the Central Park Zoo. Photo: Elizabeth Lippman May 20, 2006 -- LEAVE it to a Monkee to write about ... evolution? Micky Dolenz - former drummer (and wiseguy) of the '60s sitcom's prefab four - enters the kids' book arena this month with "Gakky Two-Feet," a lighthearted look at the first biped. Gakky, a sweet-tempered hominid, gets grief for his prehistoric predilection for walking on two feet when everyone else is gettting around on four. Only when a lion chases him does his tribe realize that bipedalism pays off. Darwin would have been proud. "I've always wondered what it was like for the first hominid," Dolenz says. At Central Park the other day, dressed like a Raider of the Lost Ark, the 61-year-old singer tossed off phrases like "seminal moments in anthropology" and took pains to explain the difference between monkeys, Monkees and apes. He says a publisher approached him years ago about doing a children's book - one built around one of the Monkees' hit songs - "but somehow, I couldn't come up with an interesting story about a train to Clarksville." (All together now: "Take the last train to Clarksville/And I'll meet you at the station/You can be here by 4:30/'cause I paid your reservation, don't be slow...") Instead, Dolenz decided to write about Early Man. Growing up in California, not far from the La Brea Tar Pits, he'd become fascinated by anthropology. He'd also read his fair share of Kipling's "Just So" stories and, for good measure, worked with animals on the '50s TV show "Circus Boy" - where he got in trouble for handing an elephant his candy bar ("At least take the wrapper off first!" the animal trainer yelled.) "To the average person, there's little or no difference between monkeys and apes," Dolenz says, "but if you studied the DNA, there's only 2 or 3 percent difference between humans and chimpanzees." As far as monkeys and Monkees go, he says, there was no connection between the simians and the pop stars. "Back then, groups just took the name of an animal and spelled it different," he says. "You never saw the Byrds with birds, or Beatles with roaches, or the Turtles with actual turtles. I guess it was kind of a fad back then." http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/63990.htm ++++++++++++++++++ From: kathy52467 Micky is doing a concert May 19th in Franklin Park, IL at 8:30pm with his sister Coco. +++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Teresa" Davy Jones will make an appearance at the Artsfest music festival in Addison, TX on May 27, beginning at about 8:30. The former Monkees drummer, singer, and actor headlined a four-and one-half-hour show that spanned the 60s from The Rip Chords performing their hot rod tunes "409" and "Little Cobra" to the Grass Roots leading sing-alongs of "Midnight Confessions" and "Sooner or Later." The red-gowned Crystals brought sweet voices and looks to match, singing their hits "Doo Ron Ron," and "He Kissed Me." Peter Noone, original lead singer for Herman's Hermits, delighted the crowd with a dozen of the band's hits. "H-E-N-R-Y" shouted the audience for a sing-along of "I'm Henry the VIII, I Am." Noone showed a biting sense of humor, referring to the convention center as an "airplane hangar." He claimed to be the youngest performer on the bill. Noone took a couple of potshots at Dolenz and Monkee Davy Jones, joking that Dolenz would ride back to his hotel in an ambulance. The weekend was all about the Monkees. however. Monkees merchandise sold briskly in the lobby. The crowd received an unexpected treat when Monkee Peter Tork joined Dolenz on stage for two songs. The pair had not appeared together since a 2001 Monkees tour. Dolenz played electric guitar throughout the show, a switch from his usual acoustic model. He delighted the crowd by playing drums on "Mary, Mary" and "Circle Sky." He acknowledged the song writing talents of Monkee Michael Nesmith, performing two of his compositions. Dolenz's sister, Coco, took lead vocals on Nesmith's "Different Drum," a song he wrote for Linda Ronstadt. The concert ended at midnight with a line of least 200 fans waiting for Micky Dolenz's autograph at a book table in the lobby. On April 30, Tork appeared on 12th Avenue in North Wildwood outside Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor for a renaming of the block to Monkees Way. On hand was the Monkees' customized, 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible and a Monkees cover band called "The Missing Links." North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey officiated over the ceremonial street renaming. Cool Scoops owner Paul Russo presented Tork a plaques commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Monkees television series and albums on behalf of the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce. The weekend's festivities started on Friday night with Philadelphia radio legend Jerry Blavat holding a well-attended record hop at the convention center. http://www.capemaycountyherald.com/article/articles/948/1/Monkee-Business-Delights-Fans-5.3.2006 +++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Paul Russo Hi Brad, Hi, This is Paul Russo the owner of Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor and founder of Super 60's Sunday. I hope you were able to enjoy or first 60's event featuring our beloved Monkees. I have been a fan for 40 years and when the opportunity came to us to host this reunion / award event we jumped at the chance. The Missing Links, Americas number one Monkees Tribute Band were fabulous. The original Monkee mobile created by Mr. George Barris was on hand to deliver the Missing Links to the stage. Our fine Mayor Mr. Bill Henfey renamed 12th Ave.. Monkee Way as we presented Mr. Tork his 40th Anniversary plaque. The most exciting part of the weekend was when I asked Peter Tork if he wanted to go see Micky at the concert hall. He said yes and the rest as we say it..IS HISTORY. This reunion was a surprise to all the concert goers and fans. This will probably be the only reunion the fans will get this year or ever. I am pleased to have gotten them together for all the fans and especially ME! Thanks to Micky and Peter for being such great guys. I am looking forward to doing something like this next year. Huebl From NY Post (the link includes a photo of Micky): April 29, 2006 -- MICKY Dolenz was once a Monkee, but when it comes to grudges, he has a memory like an elephant. The target of his ire is People maga zine, which caught him in the audience at "American Idol" and asked him to compare "AI" and "The Monkees." "I said, 'They're both phenomena, but "American Idol" is a talent show and "The Monkees" was a sitcom,' " Dolenz, 61, told The Post's Barbara Hoffman the other day at the Central Park Zoo. "But the way [the People reporter] put it, I said, 'AI was about talent, and the Monkees wasn't.' Irresponsible journalism!" And yes, he said, he really did play the drums on his records - when they let him. http://www.nypost.com/gossip/pagesix/63031.htm ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reviews ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Mickyrobindolenz hi, i was also in wildwood sunday, and i video taped some of peter on stage and him signing autographed and took some still shots as well, i had a great time, i didn't know he was with micky the night before, i knew micky was there in wildwood doing a show but not peter joining in. now, when i asked peter if he was going to do a monkees 40th he flat out said "no" i said "how about by yourself" and he said "that i will do" then i had him sign my tv guide with the "then and now" article. it was such a fun day, i met a girl, in line that was before me, i hope her picture turns out, i'm the one who kept saying to her and peter "this is the wedding shot" i also met the dj's wife, we sat together on the ground in the front row, she was very cool. a bunch of us die hard monkees fans are really hoping for some kind of mini reunion before the end of th year. if only the three of them. of if two of them show up in different duets. we will all be there if they want to do it. robin ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Spottiswoode, Heather As a life-long fan of the group, I enjoy receiving the email alerts. Just wanted to share that I live in Peter's hometown and word a couple of years ago was that he was "back" at times to live in the family home. Back in September a band of his played an outdoor concert in town and it was the first time I'd seen him perform in 19 years and it was a thrill. The band was great and the audience loved them. My 5 year old daughter has become a fan and we watch the Monkees on DVD and many of their songs are on my iPod and she knows them all. We recently saw Peter when we were out to dinner and he seems very down to earth and cool. The creatures, "hominidees", look, for all intents and purposes, far more like monkeys than like early humans. HAR! Also, Micky names one of the hominidees "Gleeb", which was cute... Could not remember what it meant, I had to look it up online today (it was Micky and his first wife Samantha's word for "love")... But I DID know it was some Monkee or Micky thing I'd heard of before. When I was paging through the book at checkout, I laughed out loud as I saw that word! My Borders bookstore (West Windsor, NJ area) had three in stock. Didn't want to order it online since I needed one the same day for my niece's party - nothing like shopping at the last minute! Seriously though, my niece ADORES books, and has a gazillion of them already, so it's impossible to buy her a book she doesn't already have, so I pounced on this opportunity, to give her a newly-released book that I was sure her mother hadn't even heard of yet! :-) It's cute... although my husband, sister-in-law and I have decided to skip the word "hominidee" and just say "monkey". Hey, our girls' aren't even in elementary school yet, we can explain the theory of evolution to them later on... :-) ---Maryann Treppiedi Jacobs http://www.ladyshutterbug.net http://www.secretserviceshowphotos.com "Music is religion; Karaoke is a cult." Rhino has set an Aug. 15 release date for expanded editions of the first two albums from TV stars turned pop idols the Monkees. Both will be issued as two-disc packages including stereo and mono mixes plus rare and previously unreleased bonus tracks. 1966's "The Monkees," which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart, sports previously unreleased alternate mixes of "Papa Gene's Blues" and "The Kind of Girl I Could Love," a version of "I Don't Think You Know Me" with Micky Dolenz on vocals, a jingle for Kellogg's and a demo for "Propinquity (I've Just Begun To Care)." The following year's "More of the Monkees" was even more successful than its predecessor, spending 18 weeks at No. 1. Among the bonus tracks are "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" with narration by Peter Tork, the first recorded version of "Valleri," an alternate take of "Tear Drop City" and a different mix of "I'm a Believer." Owing to a history of inter-band acrimony, the Monkees last toured with all four original members in 1997. Apparently, Monkee frontman Davy Jones thinks he some kind of authority on dead rockers like Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin. He says he doesn't respect them. "I don't have a lot of respect for people like Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain or Janis Joplin or Elvis Presley because they all killed themselves in one way or another," Jones told the Winnipeg Sun. "Although I often wonder what they'd be doing now if they were still alive. Would they be these crumbling look-alikes of the same people, greeting people at the entrance of Caesar's Palace?" Jones went on to take credit for washed up Guns N’ Roses frontman Alx Roses's dance moves. "I was watching videos with my kids about 20 years ago, and one of my daughters said, 'Dad, why are you dancing like Axl Rose?' " he says. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? Did your mother tell you to say that?' " You know, Jones, sometimes it really is better than to burn out than fade away. What have you been up to lately? Over at Steve Hoffman forum,he has posted some "hints" as what is on the 1st 2 releases: The great thing about the new reissues is you get to hear all of this music together - in one place. The bonus material is filled with surprises (different vocals, mixes and studio chat). As for "So Goes Love" it will appear for the first time at the original recorded speed (it is sped up on Missing Links) and with a previously unheard double tracked vocal. Virtually every bonus track has some extra element to it - studio chat, different mix - something unheard. We've been working up to the last minute to have these be filled with good sound and great songs. And someone asked about what all the designations on the MOTM reissue meant: the designations don't mean anything - all will be revealed soon.... We are getting close to getting the whole picture! Bob T My trade list site:http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-bobttradelist ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: The60sshop@aol.com Today we reran the chapter on the history of THE MONKEES' song VALLERI ... it comes from our THE SONGS OF TOMMY BOYCE AND BOBBY HART Series that we published a couple of years ago in FORGOTTEN HITS. Since you were so helpful in promoting this piece in the past, I'm sending it to you again in its entirety in the hopes that other MONKEES / BOYCE AND HART Fans (and '60's Music Fans) may want to look it over and check out our FORGOTTEN HITS Music Service. (We've got three great new series coming up that may be of interest: THE TOP 200 BIGGEST TWO-SIDED HITS OF ALL-TIME followed by an exclusive interview with PETER NOONE of HERMAN'S HERMITS ... and then a VERY lengthy feature spotlighting some of the great, FAVORITE, FORGOTTEN B-SIDES as nominated by our readers. Interested parties should contact The60sShop@aol.com. Thanks, Brad! By popular request today, we're going to rerun ('60's FLASHBACK Style) one of the most popular chapters from our TOMMY BOYCE AND BOBBY HART Series. About two years ago, we ran a three week series spotlighting the songs written by TOMMY BOYCE AND BOBBY HART ... naturally, the hits they wrote for THE MONKEES became a big part of that feature. The story behind the song VALLERI seemed to most capture the interest of our FORGOTTEN HITS readers ... in fact, it was THIS particular chapter that the online MONKEES fanzine FLEXQUARTERS ran an excerpt from which resulted in several new readers joining the FORGOTTEN HITS Mailing List. Today, by popular demand, we're going to rerun this special VALLERI chapter. *** Today we're going to examine the FACTS and FABLES concerning another one of THE MONKEES' biggest hits. In his book HOW TO WRITE A HIT SONG...AND SELL IT, TOMMY BOYCE tells a funny, interesting story revolving around one of THE MONKEES' last big hits. THE MONKEES were always being supplied new musical material from a virtual who's who of songwriters: NEIL DIAMOND, GERRY GOFFIN and CAROLE KING, NILSSON, NEIL SEDAKA and DAVID GATES (later of BREAD) all had their songs recorded by the band in the first couple of years. In addition, MICKY DOLENZ, DAVY JONES, PETER TORK and, most frequently, MIKE NESMITH were submitting their OWN compositions for consideration. Therefore, as time wore on, when BOYCE AND HART were called upon to supply a song, they pretty much needed to have one "at the ready." THE FABLE: According to BOYCE's account (as published in his book), back in the day when DON KIRSHNER oversaw those musical selections, he called BOYCE AND HART one morning and told TOMMY (who just happened to answer the phone ... BOBBY was still sound asleep) that he had a dream last night that the title of THE MONKEES' next #1 Record should be a girl's name. Spontaneously, TOMMY BOYCE replied, "Donnie, you won't believe this!!! But, last night while you were having that dream, BOBBY and I wrote an unbelievably great song for THE MONKEES ... and, are you ready for this? ... it has a girl's name in the title!" KIRSHNER was flabbergasted! "Tell me the title, quick! I want to hear it! What's her name?" Of course, TOMMY couldn't comply ... the song hadn't been written yet! "Donnie, her name is so beautiful and so exciting that I couldn't possibly tell it to you over the phone. But I'll tell you what ... you're going to love it when you hear it tomorrow." Despite KIRSHNER's insistence that TOMMY come over now and play him the song ... or, better yet, that KIRSHNER drop by THEIR place to hear the tune (that hadn't yet been written!), TOMMY finally stalled him with the excuse that BOBBY was still sleeping. (Of course, HART didn't know ANY of this as he really WAS still asleep ... and had no idea what TOMMY had just committed them to!) KIRSHNER was adamant ... "How about noon TODAY at my place?!?!" BOYCE says it was more of a command than a question. "Okay," he said, giving in, "but do me a favor. Please have everyone there who's connected with the television show." KIRSHNER agreed to assemble producers BERT SCHNEIDER and BOB RAPHELSON, vice president LESTER SILL, and chairman-of-the-board JACKIE COOPER. (Nothing like putting a little more pressure on the situation!!!) At 10:00 BOYCE decided to wake BOBBY and tell him the news ... after all, having just committed to writing the next #1 song in America was a pretty big deal!!! Realizing the pressure they were under, both songwriters quickly began making a list of girls' names but none particularly struck their fancy. TOMMY had the beginnings of a melody but they just weren't able to put it together with any of the names on the list. They decided to take a drive, hoping for inspiration (or divine intervention). At 11:00, while driving along Mulholland Drive, TOMMY finally asked BOBBY to "reach deep into your past for a recollection of one girl in your life, or even in your dreams, that you had never told anybody about." HART gave it some thought and then replied that there WAS a girl in High School that he liked a lot but she never returned the favor. He would think about her every once in a while over the years and once had even written a song about her. "I was never too hot on the song," he said, "but what I liked about it was the name, which was hers." "Come on, BOBBY," TOMMY exclaimed, "tell me her name and my melody will flow right out to meet her." And, of course, BOBBY then replied, "And her name was VALLERI" ... which INSTANTLY fit the melody that TOMMY had been working on! Now fifteen minutes away from their meeting at KIRSHNER's house, that left them all of twelve minutes to complete the song!!! They got as far as "There's a girl I know who makes me feel so good" which, along with the chorus, "and her name is Valleri ... I love you, Valleri" was all they had when they pulled into the driveway. BOYCE was banking on the fact that KIRSHNER had wanted a song with a girl's name in the title SO badly ... and the fact that he had already told him about the GREAT song they had written "the night before" ... that the conditions were, in effect, pre-programmed for them to present THE MONKEES' next big smash hit single. (With all those executives sitting in the room waiting for the debut, the anticipation was exceptionally high ... TOMMY believed that ANY song they would have played based around a girl's name would have qualified as "exactly what they were looking for.") They sang the chorus line in two-part harmony and then the first two lines of the verse ... which was all they had. They then explained that the song still needed a little work but there was nothing to worry about ... they'd have it completed by tomorrow. They then "did a reprise on the part we had written, singing it with the all gusto one reserves for GOD BLESS AMERICA." For the grand-finale, BOYCE hit a big final chord, tossed his guitar over his shoulder and went down on one knee in his "best ELVIS fashion." The room fell silent as they waited for KIRSHNER's reaction. Finally, KIRSHNER jumped to his feet and shouted "It's a smash ... Number One!!!" All the other execs in the room agreed. They had pulled it off! According to TOMMY, they completed the first verse later that day and then booked studio time for the following afternoon. Then they went to a movie!!! THE MONKEES were told to report to the studio the following day at five o'clock and between two and five, the basic musical backing tracks were recorded. In twenty minutes, BOYCE AND HART wrote a second verse and between five and six o'clock THE MONKEES' vocals were added. The whole process took all of FOUR HOURS!!! It was quickly mixed and put into the television show the following week!!! BOYCE then goes on to say that "Just as soon as the television show was aired, two disc-jockeys, one from Florida and the other from Chicago, decided on their own to make a tape of VALLERI and pipe it out from their radio stations. On each of those two stations, before it had even sold a single record, the song became Number One on the request list. RCA called Donnie Kirshner and told him that if he released it as a single, they would pre-ship two million records and guarantee that it would be the Number One Record. Good to their word, they released VALLERI the following week and within three weeks it was Number One in both Cash Box and Billboard. Two weeks later, it was Number One in almost every country in the world with sales of close to three million records." THE FACTS: Now that's a pretty amazing and fascinating little story ... but a little bit of research indicates that TOMMY may have "stretched the truth" just a little bit here and there. What first tipped me off was the end bit regarding VALLERI's astounding chart life. Now PART of this story is true. After VALLERI aired on an episode of the television series, WCFL, right here in Chicago, started playing the heck out of it from a tape they had made from the broadcast. Every night it came in at #1 on the Top Five Most Requested Songs Of The Day ... and this went on for weeks and weeks and weeks. (From what I understand, some folks believe that WCFL then sent out copies of their "bootleg" version of VALLERI to other stations around the country to air ... however, I am more inclined to believe that they kept it to themselves as a "SUPER 'CFL Exclusive." However, a radio station in Florida DID get the same results when THEY played a taped copy on the air ... the request lines lit up like a Christmas tree and Florida fans couldn't get enough of the song.) Growing up here at the time, I clearly remember ALL of these events as I, too, thought VALLERI was a great song and listened to WCFL's Top Requests Countdown every night! I remember my frustration at not being able to BUY the song because it was only available on tape at the radio station. However, THIS is where BOYCE's story falls apart. VALLERI first aired on the CAPTAIN CROCODILE episode of the television series on February 20, 1967, five months after the series premiered on NBC. It was not released as a single until March of 1968 ... a full THIRTEEN MONTHS later!!! (An RCA / COLGEMS recording log that I found shows that THE MONKEES first laid down this track on August 6, 1966 ... HARDLY the week before it aired! In fact, this was before a single episode of the TV series had ever been shown ... so, if ANY of that conversation between KIRSHNER and BOYCE AND HART ever really happened, they wouldn't have referred to VALLERI as THE MONKEES' "NEXT Number One Hit ... it would have been their very FIRST Number One Hit!!! They had not yet released a single recording!!!) When VALLERI WAS finally released as a single a year later, it was a completely re-recorded version, which DID go to #1 in Cash Box but stopped at #3 in Billboard. THE MONKEES recorded a completely new version of this song in December of 1967 (sessions were held on the 26th and the 28th), which ultimately became the hit single release. (Being a HUGE MONKEES fan at the time, I remember personally being VERY surprised to see this single finally being released after all that time.) Songwriting partner BOBBY HART explains that after wrestling control away from KIRSHNER regarding the selection of the material THE MONKEES would record ... and then winning the rights to play their own instruments on those records ... by the end of 1967 they also had it written into their contracts that ALL future recordings would show "Produced by THE MONKEES" on the label. (By this time, each member of the band was generally recording their new tracks individually anyway, so when a new album was completed, they simply went with the group production credit.) As such, the 1966 track (which was produced by BOYCE AND HART) had to be scrapped because the Musicians Union contracts had already been filed with BOYCE AND HART's names on them as producers. This meant that when THE MONKEES decided to release VALLERI as a single, a whole new track needed to be created. BOYCE AND HART (who, by this time, had been dismissed as producers) were approached about coming back and, according to HART, "making it sound as close to the original as possible." Contrary to TOMMY's account, BOBBY says "VALLERI was specifically written for them. Over a year after we cut the song, LESTER SILL came back to us and said, 'They want you to recut VALLERI. You can't have producers credit, but we want you to go back in and do it again, making it sound as close to the original as possible.' So that's what we did." During the re-recording process, yet ANOTHER mix was created ... and this is the one that seems to have found its way to oldies radio ... in fact, the "cold ending" version is now more likely to be heard than the original hit single version! Today, we give you all THREE versions in FORGOTTEN HITS ... the very rare TV-version mix (VALLERI-1), the hit single version (VALLERI-2, which is the re-recording from 1968 that fades out at the end) and the other now-more-popular "cold ending" version (VALLERI-3). Hopefully, along the way we've also shared a fascinating look at the song's origins! (Unfortunately, this seems to be yet another case of 30-year hindsight propaganda making for a better story than the truth ... with so many erroneous "facts" stated in BOYCE's account of the song's success, one cannot help but wonder what other "mistruths" might exist in his account of the events of the day ... writing the song in an hour and a half, selling it to a room full of executives with two lines of verse and two lines of chorus and then recording the whole thing with THE MONKEES in one hour ... now knowing that at LEAST three complete takes exist!) However, the "embellished" account sure does make for a fascinating story!!! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reviews ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Jane Turner Hi, Thank you so much for all your hard work in keeping us all informed as to the acivities of the Monkees, I was able to see Day Jones in concert at Freedomfest in Wheeling IL. It was a cool sunny day, traffic wasn't bad and our Monkee CD sounded great, for the 2 hour ride, on the 4th of July. The festaval was easy to find and easy to enjoy the activites they had in the afternoon. We set our chairs up two rows behind a VIP fence to save our spot and enjoyed a crowded and long parade, had not seen so many people watching a parade in a long time. We journeyed back to our seats to watch the concert, as the croud grew very large to see Davy. A lady in the row in front of us was putting her chairs over the VIP fence and for some reason my daughter followed behind. Then this lady didn't know what to do and how we would get in, because she was able to say ??. Meanwhile people moved up behind use so we lost our spot. I told security and he let us in the VIP area. (Thank You). My girls were thrilled to be on the other side of the fence. The show started and Davy looked great, a little out of breath, his jokes didn't go well, always checking to see if the mic was on and there was a heckler in the audience too. We heard all the classics and a few new ones (to us). It was great. At past concerts I've been to, we were usually standing most of time, but this one was like a sitting dinner show untill the encore. I kinda felt bad, I know performers feed off the audience, and he has said that too. Well during the encore, my kids want to move to the side of the stage, and you know possibly meet him, I didn't want to, but I'm a mom, and I know it's impossible anyway, but we moved, giving my girls the thrill. And it turned out to be thrilling! I instantly got grabed by the lady whom got us on the other side, going crazy, yelling and screaming at us, escorting us back to our seats, yelling at us more which I couldn't hear much over the loud music. But I did hear the part where she was going to have us arrested! ARRESTED! Looking at my husband, giving me the look, we haphaserdly picked up all our things and left the VIP section. Now on the outside, not beleiving what just happened, checking to see we got everything and putting our stuff together, we listend to the last song, God Bless America. And blessed we were, for not being arressted at a Davy Jones concert!!! We skipped the fireworks to get back on the road for our 2 hour journey home. Talking about what happened, what could have happened (the girls were a little scared, they are 10 and 13) and a whole bunch of other sinarios of the event that took place. We came to the conclusion that they will have a great story to tell when they get back to school, when they have to write about "How I Spent My Summer Vacation". Well lets see, I 'almost' got arrested at a Davy Jones concert on the 4th of July!!!!! To me I have come full circle, growing up in Milwaukee and seeing the guys many different times, living in up state New York and going to a concert in Boston, Living in West Virginia and going to Columbus and Pittsburg and now with so many years that have gone by, being back in Wisconsin and still seeing Davy Jone, live and in concert. Thank You so much for still touring and saring the love of music and entertainment with all of us, generations of fans!!!! We love you!!. Jane ** We Love Wisconsin, Sheboygan Falls ** +++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Morgen ." Peter & SSB - Micky in Akron The concert was great!!! He didn't play Randy Scouse Git, I was very disappointed. It's HIS song, after all. You'd think he would sing a song that he wrote!! He didn't do "Goin' Down" either, which is one of my very favorites. Well, I guess he had his reasons. He did do a lot of classic Monkee songs, and he put on a GREAT show, even if it was just too short!!! I think he played for more than an hour, but it felt like 10 minutes. Probably because I wanted more, more, more.... He signed my daughters Gakky Two Feet book, and she was ecstatic. She keeps telling me how Micky signed her book and smiled at her, and how she said thank you. She really enjoyed the concert, too, and sang along to every song! I didn't get a photo because my camera was going dead. I have a little digital that you have to choose photo or record on, and the battery was so low it was shutting off almost as soon as I turned it on. I just had to push the "go" button on it, and it recorded briefly, so I got him signing Rachel's book, then it shut off! I met a really nice girl there named Tiffany who had "I Love Micky Dolenz" on the back of her t-shirt, and she took a pic with her camera and is going to email it to me. Ironically, my husband tried once more to get a shot with our dead camera, and he managed to get a shot of Tiffany's mom with Micky! During the concert she handed him her hat, and he wore it for the rest of the concert. He probably would have kept it, but Coco took it off his head and gave it back. I'm sure he would have given it back to her at the autograph table. Anyway, so the little clip that's on my camera is of her standing with him, and she's wearing her hat again. So I'll have something to send to Tiffany, too! There were a LOT of people there, and the autograph line was really long, but Micky stuck around even after signing and let people take photos with him. He was great, and he's tops in my little girls book, still, and I'm so glad that he was so nice even though I know he must have been wiped out. (It was hot and humid). Great show, great day. "Zack" Cherry, who, with the late Joel Kane, composed the script to Episode No. 56 of The Monkees, "Some Like It Lukewarm" (a.k.a. "The Band Contest"), succumbed to cancer on September 27, 2006 at the age of 74. In addition to The Monkees, Cherry produced, directed and/or wrote episodes for a variety of series, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Kids from C.A.P.E.R., The Addams Family, Gilligan's Island and The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis (his first venture with Joel Kane). He wrote the 1971 film Bunny O'Hare with Monkee writing alumnus Coslough Johnson. Variety has an obituary. To absent friends... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: MTreppiedi I checked the archives first and didn't see anything about this... although there's a blurb on the home page of Davy's site (http://www.davyjones.net/ - scroll down). My husband, who's a newspaper copy editor, is getting our three-year-old daughter hooked up with various kiddie CDs, DVDs and books from a woman at his paper who reviews such things and therefore gets them FREE. Her kids, however are too old for a lot of it, so she's giving them to Tom when she's done with them. Tonight he came home with a Sandra Boynton board book, "Your Personal Penguin," and included with it was a promotional CD - Davy singing a musical arrangement of the book's words. (My husband feels very triumphant that he has not only brought home something to make Marni smile, but Mommy as well!) The song is TOO CUTE and I think Marni will bug me to play it endlessly... She's sound asleep when hubby comes home from work, so this will wait until tomorrow. So now I have this, plus Micky's "Gakky Two-Feet" book (by the way, Marni now refers to her khaki shorts - that she still wears around the house now that it's too cold to wear them outside - as her "Khaki Two-Shorts" - HA!). Still missing Micky's "...Puts You To Sleep" CD, and yes, I've seen it on eBay, but yikes, that fetched a big bid last time I saw it there! The writing on the CD says it's just a promo copy, and that the song will be available to consumers as an MP3 download only... but I'm guessing you need to buy the book first http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/0761143726/ref=s9_asin_title/102-9827628-1802545 or, as it says on Davy's site, purchase $100 worth of merchandise from davyjones.net, to get a promo CD of the song... ---Maryann Treppiedi Jacobs http://www.ladyshutterbug.net http://www.secretserviceshowphotos.com "Music is religion; Karaoke is a cult." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Caroline Boyce" To All My Music Friends, I have good news … Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart have been nominated to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame 2007 in the Non Performing Songwriter category. It reads: “The songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart were responsible for such classic hits by the Monkees as their TV theme song “Hey Hey We’re the Monkees,” “Last Train to Clarksville” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” which was also a hit for Paul Revere and the Raiders. The duo’s first hit came in 1964 when Jay and the Americans reached No. 3 with “Come a Little Bit Closer.” Boyce & Hart eventually signed with A&M Records, where they recorded such hits as “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight” and “Alice Long (You’re Still My Favorite Girlfriend)” and toured with the Monkees. Key songs in the Boyce & Hart catalog include “Come A Little Bit Closer,” “Hey Hey We’re The Monkees,” “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight?,” “Last Train to Clarksville ” and “Valleri.” 2007 marks the 40th Anniversary of Boyce & Hart … we have some projects in the works and Tommy & Bobby receiving this honor would be so wonderful! If you’re a member of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame or know someone who is … I ask that you please vote for Tommy & Bobby … The SHOF requests that the ballot be received by Tuesday, November 14 th, 2006.
