I don't know if anybody else listens to Danny Bonaduce's (Partridge Family)

syndicated radio show, but this morning, just as I'm pulling into work, I hear

the name "Davy Jones". Shore 'nuff, some girl named Jennifer Jones (not

the talk-show gal) wanted Davy to sing "Daydream Believer" to her, and Davy

called Danny's show back to oblige. Boy, it sounded like Davy wanted to get

it overwith quick, he sang about 10 seconds starting with "Cheer up sleepy Jean",

and it sounded like he just woke up. A half-hearted effort, but at least he did it.

Nice way to start a Monday morning, some live Monkee music!

Monkee Business

Jack Nicholson, the evil-looking star of The Shining and One Flew Over The

Cuckoo's Nest, has more strings to his bow than we thought. He was, it is

claimed, directly responsible for the demise of the Monkees, the

squeaky-clean 1960s popsters. Thirty years later, the band's petite English

singer, Davy Jones, has finally aired his grudge.

Nicholson wrote and produced Head, a "satirical" film about the band. The

result left the Monkees far from happy. "He did a terrible writing job,"

Jones tells me. "He had written this crazy movie, which ended up completely

finishing our career."

The film tells the story about the band's psychedelic, drug-fueled journey

through the 1960s. "Jack was putting in stuff like explicit Vietnam war

footage and tapes of assassinations," Jones explains. "It was guaranteed to

turn off our very young audience. It almost seemed like that was what he

was trying to do."

Hi guys,

I have just released a CD with a (pardon my bias) great cover of "Love is

Only Sleeping." I have been looking on the web for sites dedicated to The

Monkees and saw the page for your mailing list.

You can check out my site at http://www.vermisciousmusic.com and be sure to

check out my page talking about the Monkees. Although I didn't put a

downloadable/streamable sample from that song on my website for copyright

reasons (the rest of the songs are original).

Pearl Jam Sets Chart Record

Pearl Jam set a new record this week, when five of the band's European bootlegs debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Releasing 25 double-CD live albums simultaneously — as Pearl Jam did on Sept. 26, when it made "bootlegs" from virtually every show of its European summer tour in support of its album Binaural available in stores — might have seemed like a commercial folly. But don't underestimate the devotion of Pearl Jam fans. Five out of the 25 debuted on the Billboard Top 200 this week, the first time an act has had more than two titles bow on the chart in the same week.

This is also the first time any artist has had more than one live album on the chart at the same time. The best-selling titles in the series, and their respective chart positions, were: Katowice 6/16 (No. 103), Milan 6/22 (No. 125), Verona 6/20 (No. 134), London 5/30 (No. 137), and Hamburg 6/26 (No. 175).

Two other titles — Cardiff 6/6 and Manchester 6/4 — just barely missed cracking the chart as well. Had Pearl Jam managed to place those two on the charts as well, it would have joined The Beatles, U2, and the Monkees in sharing the record for most albums on the chart simultaneously.

We'll see if the band can repeat the feat next year. On Sept. 28, just two days after the bootlegs when on sale commercially (they had been available online since early September), plans to release similar soundboard recordings from the shows on both legs of the North American tour were disclosed.

The decision to release the live discs was initiated by Pearl Jam to deter sales of expensive bootlegs. Starting in 1995, the band began allowing fans to bring handheld, Walkman-style audio recorders to its shows. Since instituting that policy, the number of Pearl Jam bootlegs in the marketplace has dropped markedly, but five to 10 new ones still surface after each tour.

Check out the new issue of TV guide (Oct 9-14 issue) -in the Cheers and Jeers

section, a 'Jeers' goes out to Rick Springfield for appearing on the 'VH1

Behind the Music Special'- it reads'

'Jeers to a dubious judgment. Just what exactly was ex-pop idol Rick

Springfield thinking when kept his promise to appear on VH1's deliriously

juicy "Behind the Music Anniversary Special'? Honoring commitments is all

well and good, but Springfield had to know that the subject of his September

18 arrest on a domestic assault charge would be prime fodder for the

September 24 program. Talk about a classic 'Behind the Music Moment', A soft

spoken Springfield, having already spent a night in jail, faced questions

from host Kathy Griffin, while fellow guest (and former Monkee) Mickey Dolenz

(spelled wrong!) looked on. Dolenz is hoping to produce a series starring

Springfield, but the funniest Monkee couldn't help himself when Springfield

was asked what he has coming up. "Indictment?' quipped Dolenz. Hey, it's

his joke, not ours!"

Enjoy!

The Monkees are mentioned on page 241 of the new Beatles Anthology table top

book written by the Beatles. In it, John Lennon quips (in 1967) about the

Beatles Sgt. Pepper's image that if people want mop tops there's the Monkees

for that.

Each January, for the last 15 years, the World Folk Music Association has

sponsored a exciting folk music extravaganza, bringing together a unique

mixture of both well-known and lesser known folk performers. It has always

been a wonderful opportunity to see and hear your favorite folk performers

as well as become acquainted with new ones. In 1997 the concert was expanded

from a single evening in a large concert hall to a full weekend of folk

music at one of the best listening rooms in the country:

The Birchmere has been selected as the site for the 16th Annual WFMA Benefit

Weekend, to be held January 12-13, 2001. Featured performers this year will

include John Stewart, Buffy Ford, Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary),

Christine Lavin, Tommy Makem, Peter Tork (of the Monkees), James Lee

Stanley, Side by Side, Dave Crossland, John Hoke, Dave Batti, Chuck

McDermott, Eliza Gilkyson, Craobh Rua and others.

There will only be two concerts this year. The Friday, January 12th concert

will feature a tribute to singer-songwriter John Stewart, and the weekend

will conclude on Saturday night, January 13, with an outstanding line-up of

folk performers.

Tickets will go on sale later this month. Also check out www.wfma.net. The

official hotel is the Holiday Inn National Airport. You must call the hotel

directly at 703-684-7200 and request the WFMA special rate of $79.

Greetings!

If you've received this email by mistake please hit reply and type remove in the subject line.

Television Parts Home Companion: The Television Parts Home Companion is now available on VHS for $12.95, plus shipping and handling. It's a Videoranch exclusive. Only in the "Home Companion" will you find "The Voyage of the Kona Tiki", rare documentary footage of one man's valiant attempt to cross the Pacific in a Polynesian Restaurant. Guaranteed to make you laugh, get one while they last. Click here to order.

Tropical Campfires CD: We now have an all new Tropical Campfires CD! The cover art is finally as Nez had originally intended (he did the work himself), and it looks great. This is going to be a must have for Nez collectors. Click here to get your copy now.

Live at the Palais: Thank you all for an overwhelming "yes" in response to our query "Should we put Live at the Palais out on CD?". We had no idea so many people felt strongly about that album. Nez went along with it and it's official: we're going to put it out. We have no date set for it now but we're hoping to have it available in time for the holidays. We are going to add 4 or 5 never before released live tracks. These tracks will be from concerts spanning the early 70s through the 90s. We've been going through recordings and found some great stuff. His early 80s concert at the Armadillo World Headquarters is unbelievable. We'll choose at least one song from that show. KPIG radio will be happy about this release because they insist Palais has the best version of Rio on it.

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks: Speaking of Nez concerts, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks used to open for Nez in the 70's. Their new album, Beatin' the Heat, is fabulous. It's their first album in years and they've still got it. Very sophisticated with a good sense of humor. It's another of KPIG's picks and we're sure you'll like it. We've been singing along with it all day here at the ranch. Listen

You can also listen to samples by going to the KPIG Sty in VR3D. Click here to buy the CD.

Here's a little piece of Nez trivia: One of the Hot Licks, Sid Page, is a fiddle player and violinist. He played violin on The Garden with Nez. Listen ...real pretty, huh?

The Story of Me: A new little movie by Michael Panes. This film is a humorous piece about a man who chronicles his relationship with his wife on his laptop as it occurs. You can watch "The Story of Me" by going to the Formosa Diner page on the 2D site. You'll need Real Player to play it and you can download that from there. We've also got it playing in VR3D. Just click on the Rocket TV floating at the entrance to the Connection Corral. If you need to download VR3D software click here.

Thanks for your interest in Videoranch. We love working here. It's nice to facilitate getting an artists work directly from him to you. Please email us with any requests you might have and we'll be sure to ignore them (just kidding - making sure you're actually reading our newsletter closely).

Hi Derek,

I'd be happy to add you to the Videoranch news list. I'll wait to get the go

ahead from you though. Just email me back that it's ok. Yes, it's true.

Live at the Palais will be out on CD. We're hoping to have it out in time

for the holidays. And yes, Nez is working on a new CD called Nez Rays. There

is no release date set for that yet. He's still working on the arrangements.

Thanks for the email.

Brad: Cruise will be in the fall and out of Florida. Micky isn't doing any

west coast cruises that I know of. I'm getting the flyer put together and

will mail several out to you plus e-mail the info to you. You should get

everything sometime next week. Please send a physical (mailing) address just

in case I don't have yours.

It'll be fun to meet fellow Micky/Monkee fans. I'm looking forward to the

opportunity!

I'm seeing Micky next weekend in the Orlando area. He's putting on a show for

a place called "Gina's On The Water". It's part of a big birthday bash one of

the local radio stations is hosting! (I'm working on a separate cruise group

for the radio station next year.) All in all it should be a fun evening!!!

The episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch titled

"Dante's Inferno" will repeat on Tuesday, October 24.

One of the storylines in this episode has the

character Aunt Hilda (Caroline Rhea) coming down with

a bad case of punnitis, which conjures Monkee Davy

Jones on her back early in the episode when she says

"Got a monkey on my back". Davy is seen frequently

(and sings!) in this episode though it's considered a

cameo. Also making an appearance is none other than

Teri Garr as Witch Yenta, who appeared in the Monkees'

motion picture, "Head".

The episode will show on the network KTLA at 6:00 pm

pacific time on the 24th, though some other WB

networks may show this episode as well on the same

day.

I was lucky enough to interview Micky Dolenz on Wednesday, October 4th. This article ran, edited, in the October 12th edition of the Williamsport (PA) Sun-Gazette.

Nicole Banks

In the late 1960 s, Micky Dolenz made his mark on pop culture as the star the Monkees. The television show about a band blurred the lines between reality and fantasy, and the four actors hired for the series Dolenz, David Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork found themselves on unfamiliar territory as major recording artists. Dolenz likens the transformation to a Star Trek character coming to life: "It s like Leonard Nimoy really became a Vulcan."

The Monkees have sold over 65 million records worldwide, and their television show regularly plays in syndication. This summer, the TV music channel VH-1 paid homage to the group with a made-for-TV movie and an edition of the critically-acclaimed show "Behind the Music."

The longevity of the Monkees phenomenon no longer fazes Dolenz. "I'm not surprised by it any more. It has become much greater than any of us, and it will continue long after we re gone. Now that I m a director/producer, I can identify the elements that have helped contribute to the success. It wasn t any one thing--it was a certain amount of serendipity, and the whole was much greater than the sum of the parts."

Dolenz sang the vast majority of the Monkees songs, but is unsure of how he was placed in that position. "The Monkees was a TV show, and therefore it didn't exist. When they cast these parts, we didn't have any input as to who was going to be in it. In fact, I remember being introduced to everyone one day. Recording was the same way: it was all in the hands of other people. We had no control over anything. And I was quite happy at the time to allow the producers to handle that.

"I think the reason I ended up singing then was because everyone had their own styles. Peter was bluesy and folk, Mike was country western/country rock, and David was Broadway/music hall style. I was the only one that had a rock and roll style in fact I auditioned for the Monkees playing "Johnny B. Goode" on the guitar. Not to be self-deprecating, but I think that might have had something to do with it I was the only one with a rock and roll style. I was the only one that could go, Waaaaaaaaa and screech out like they wanted."

None of the other Monkees ever confronted Dolenz about his increased vocal representation. "But even if they had come to me, there wasn't anything I could have done about it. Sometimes we would all do lead vocals for a song, and the producers would just choose the one they liked best. We had absolutely no control over it. I mean, I would have liked to have sung I Wanna Be Free, and I did, in fact, but they went with David."

When asked if any of the Monkees songs were difficult for him to sing, either because he disliked the material or because they were vocally challenging, Dolenz responded, "We had fantastic song writers, and they would come to me with demos. I was happy to go along with them. I don t remember having any that I didn t like. But, you have to realize that those two years were so busy that eventually it all just blurred together for me. I would sometimes record 2-3 lead vocals a night, and this was after doing the TV show all day.

"The song Gonna Buy Me a Dog, was difficult to sing because they wanted us to sing it straight. David and I were in the studio, and we did a couple of takes of it, but fortunately they used the one where we were goofing off. I don t know how anyone could have sung that song straight."

For Micky Dolenz, life after the Monkees has been rich and rewarding. He is a respected producer and director, both in the United States and in England. Dolenz has several projects in development, including a show for the Disney Channel that combines live action and animation.

He is actively involved in charity work, including playing at an upcoming dance-a-thon in April of 2001 that will benefit the American Foundation for Children and Youth. The Foundation aids organizations that aim to prevent childhood emotional and behavioral disorders. "My daughter and my ex-wife got me involved in the project. I thought it was a good idea. Sounds like a lot of fun."

Dolenz is also an accomplished painter whose art focuses on scientific issues. "Since I was a child, I was very involved in electronics, chemistry and physics. I don t know&I must have had a great junior high teacher. I d say in the late 70 s it found its way into my artwork."

Dolenz has released two children s albums through Rhino Records. He also writes music. "Recently I ve been writing country tunes. I don t know why, but every time I pick up a guitar, I write country. I m not a prolific songwriter, though.

"I would love to do another solo album. However, I m realistic about the industry. It s hard to get a record deal. I don t think I could get someone to back me at this point, but I d love to. I released the CD Demoiselle over my website. But, as for a full-blown record album that gets airplay, that s different."

Currently, Dolenz is on the road with the Teen Idols Tour, which also features Peter Noone, formerly of Herman s Hermits, and Bobby Sherman. He performs a selection of Monkees tunes, including I m A Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday.

Dolenz feels the Teen Idols Tour has one great advantage to the tours the Monkees did in the 1960 s. "In the 60 s, the equipment was prehistoric. It was equivalent to a karaoke machine. I couldn t hear what I was playing because the kids were screaming so loudly. I could just barely hear my snare drum. In fact, Mike and I worked a code to keep things going. We didn t have any monitor systems in those days, but Mike could hear me, and he was on guitar, so he would tap his foot in rhythm to the music, and I would follow his lead. The other two were kind of on their own, though."

At this time, the Monkees have no reunion plans. But, says Dolenz, "I've learned to never say never. I wouldn t rule it out."

From: "BONNIE VERRICO" <Bonniev@ccsso.org>

Hi everyone,

I've been spending the day sending out press releases to California

newspapers, radio and TV stations about SSB's upcoming performance at

the Benefit Dance on October 21st, and I thought that sharing some of

the information from the press release might be helpful and/or

informative to some of you. Please feel free to post this information

on your sites, lists, etc... or share it with friends and colleagues.

This is a terrific cause & one the guys have a lot of feeling for, so it

would be great to have a big showing!

Take care, Bonnie

Here's the info:

Peter Tork, original member of the 60's pop group The Monkees,

and his classic Rock & Blues dance band, Shoe Suede Blues, will be in

Santa Monica to perform at a return engagement on Saturday, October 21,

2000 at The Church at Ocean Park in Santa Monica from 8pm-midnight. All

proceeds from this dance will benefit Beyond Baroque Child Care Program,

Felicity House (a women's recovery home) and the Lorna Poe Independent

Living Center. The Church at Ocean Park is located at 235 Hill Street,

corner of 2nd and Hill Streets. Tickets are $9.00 at the door. For

more information regarding the benefit, please call Becky at

310-202-7934.

Shoe Suede Blues was formed when Peter Tork and friend, Tadg

Galleran, were asked in 1994 to put together a band for this same

benefit, held that year in Venice Beach, CA. The band has continued to

perform at the benefit ever since. Following their initial performances

for this benefit, Shoe Suede Blues quickly began to receive performance

requests from clubs in California and other states, and the band has

grown in popularity to the point that they now tour across the nation,

performing for benefits, private functions and in nightclubs. Plans are

also underway for the band to tour abroad in 2001.

This event has become a labor of love for the national band, due

to the members' high interest in assisting community help groups around

the country. Fans will have the opportunity to meet and speak with all

of the band members, including Peter Tork, who will also sign autographs

and have their picture taken with anyone requesting such.

Monkee steals show at orchestra's 1960s fest

By Punch Shaw

Special to the Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH -- How retro can you go?

The Fort Worth Symphony Pops Orchestra upped the ante on this whole 1960s

Retrofest thing last night at Bass Performance Hall, not only by honoring

the absolute, indisputable godhead of that delirious decade, the Beatles,

but also by throwing in a tip of the drumsticks to another '60s icon, the

Monkees.

Homage was paid to the Fab Four with The Classical Mystery Tour, a package

consisting of a band of faux Fabs with their music director, Martin Herman,

conducting the orchestra.

The Monkees tribute was a little more direct. Monkee drummer Mickey Dolenz

made a surprise guest appearance.

There is a certain irony here. This is a guy who made a mint in the late

1960s playing in an ersatz Beatles band created entirely for a bad TV show

who now, some 600 years later, is still milking his 15 minutes with a real

ersatz Beatles band. Can you say "pathetic"?

Or how about, Can you say "dynamite"?

Dolenz stole the show with a righteously shredded version of Sgt. Pepper's

Lonely Hearts Club Band and a shockingly effective reading of the poignant

ballad She's Leaving Home. The band, led by Tony Kishman as Paul and Jim

Owen as John, had fine moments with tunes such as All You Need is Love, I Am

the Walrus and A Day in the Life, and especially with the rousing finale

Golden Slumbersarry That Weight, one of the last numbers the Beatles

recorded.

Kishman was the most like his character, right down to the droopy eyelids.

He provided some of the best moments with his takes on solo McCartney tunes.

Harrison clone David Brighton was the most disappointing simply because he

was playing the wrong guitar with the wrong amp.

Drummer Carmine Grippo has the Ringo look and moves down, and he is a fine

skins man. But the way he is most similar to Mr. Starkey is that they both

have terrible voices. Somehow it was easier to take with Ringo.

Unfortunately, Dolenz will perform with the group again only tonight. That

is a shame because he was so good and because they did not do the obvious

song that should have resulted from the pairing of Dolenz and substitute

Mop-tops.

How could these people have taken the stage together and not performed that

Beatles classic, Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My

Monkee?

Channeling TV's Top Theme Songs

Our impossible mission? Selecting the 25 best tunes in television history.

By Elita Bradley

--------------------------------------------------------------

It's a job big enough for Jim Rockford, Thomas Magnum, Peter Gunn and Charlie's Angels combined: Track

down the best 25 themes in TV history.

Why even attempt such a feat? Because in an industry that sees more than half its shows fail to last

beyond a single season, those that do survive often have memorable themes.

In compiling our (admittedly subjective) list of the top 25 TV theme songs, for instance, sonicnet.com

discovered that nearly every chosen show lasted at least five years, and all of them have, or will have,

long — and lucrative — lives in syndication.

Do strong theme songs help shows survive? Read the following list and decide for yourself.

.....

"The Monkees"

On air: 1966/68

Theme song: "(Theme From) The Monkees"

Years before the Partridge Family first belted out "Come On, Get Happy," the Monkees introduced themselves

to the world with their happy-go-lucky signature song. The Prefab Four had several other hits —

including "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Daydream Believer" — but none could get inside a listener's

head like the one where they proclaimed, "We're too busy singing to put anybody down."

Apparently, the Paris Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas may put Davy Jones in a show on the Las Vegas Strip!

Paris plan

One of the entertainment options being considered by Paris Las Vegas as a replacement for "Notre Dame de Paris" is the musical comedy "Mystery of Edwin Drood." Dan Florio, co-producer of the show that won six Tonys in four seasons on Broadway, said the presentation has been made and rests in the hands of the powers-that-be.

Florio said Raquel Welch and the Monkees' Davy Jones are tentatively lined up to play the leads. The murder mystery would include a revolutionary touch: pari-mutuel betting on the outcome. Each show would have a different ending, allowing showgoers to wager on the killer du jour. Another possibility, according to rumblings, is a French revue.

I just wanted to share the news that the latest issue of People Magazine (the

November 6, 2000 issue) features an article on rock musician Peter Frampton.

In the article he compares his role in the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts

Club Band to the guys television series in a negative way. The article begins

on page 140 and continues through page 143.

Thank you,
