Top Bananas! 9/6/97 Colorado Rapids vs Kansas City Wizards @ Mile High Stadium and The Monkees! This is absolutely the best I have ever seen the Monkees minus Mike. A musically tight, well produced show that touched all the hits, some from "Then and Now" and "Justus", and "Lucille" thrown in to showcase Peter's slide guitar work. As a musician, with 10x binoculars, I can verify that Peter WAS playing that 5 string bass. While I've grown to expect the Davy Jones - heavy metal "Steppin' Stone," the straight ahead version they did tonight with Mickey singing and playing drums was killer. Except for the comp intro to "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (Does anyone know what song this is?) and the fact that the lead guitar player couldn't play the "Valleri" solo, everything was musically true, high energy, Monkeemania! Even songs like "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow" and "Words" were alive with high energy rock and roll. No lounge act, these boys. Oh, my wife says that Davy looked great, with his Monkee logoed silky oversized shirt that he left open down the middle. And he still has it, as the early teen cheerleaders screamed when he said he was going to take them on tour with him. >From "Last Train to Clarksville" to "Daydream Believer" this was one fantastic show. When the show was over, with Peter in the lead, the boys circled the stadium giving "five" to everyone at the fence. Well, except for Mickey, who crapped out about half way around and just started waving. I guess drums are harder to play, as his shirt was soaked with sweat. (Now all you perverted women are going to bid on his dirty shirt!) Bottom Line? Do what you gotta do, go where you gotta go, just to see the best Monkee show ever. jgordontill@nospam_compuserve.com
