A bit late to get the word out, but there will be a live Davy Jones concert broadcast on XM Radio on New Years eve. It'll be on Channel 6 (aka "The 60's on 6). People do not have to have XM to get it, you can go to www.xmradio.com and listen for free if you have high speed. The free ride only lasts for a few days, but it'll get you through Davy's show.
They are actually doing a series of live broadcasts that night that Monkee fans may be into since they are all 60's groups. Each show starts at midnight for the timezone listed, so people will have to convert for their time zone. Looks like a great way to spend 6 hours to me. :)
Oh, and I'll give fair warning - I just got XM on Friday, Dec 22nd, and I haven't been able to turn it off since. They play more than just a group's top single...when is the last time y'all heard Porpose Song on the radio??? XM = audio crack, instantly addictive!!!! Y'all have been warned. :)

Grinding the Organ
IT'S LATE WEDNESDAY MORNING, and First Church of Christ, Scientist in Carmel, California, is empty. So, naturally, Michael Nesmith wants to fill it with music. He taps on a computer keyboard for a minute and notches up the volume not quite to 11, but loud enough to feel in your bones. The piece, Tomas Albinoni's Adagio for Strings, is familiar it was used as theme music in Gallipoli but Nesmith and Calvin, the virtual pipe organ he designed, have transformed it into something spectacular.
Calvin short for computer-aided live venue instrument consists of a Dell computer, six powered JBL speakers, and an 18-inch subwoofer. Its modest wooden cabinet sits a couple feet from the console of the church's regular organ, with its floor-to-ceiling pipes. But Calvin's sonic range dwarfs that of its neighbor. "It sounds like the organ, but it's so much better," Nesmith says, as Albinoni's piece, ethereal and startlingly crisp, swirls around us.
Traditional pipe organs are one-man orchestras, versatile instruments that can mimic the sounds of violins, cellos, woodwinds, and brass. But even the most dexterous organist, limited to 10 fingers and two feet, couldn't take on a complex, layered piece like the Adagio. "The organ could play it, but the organist couldn't," Nesmith says.
Calvin, however, can play just about anything, and Nesmith has programmed in church hymns, Mozart, and, for kicks, Sting's "Fields of Gold." Calvin's secret is a database from NDB, a Hungarian company that recorded more than 3,000 tones from two of the world's finest organs, capturing every sound in their Budapest cathedrals, including the reverb of the music off the stone walls. Teaching Calvin a new piece means matching these organ samples to the original instrumentation. Adagio for Strings is usually played by a 50-piece orchestra. To make it work on Calvin, Nesmith programmed a series of digital files that tell the system to select organ sounds that best represent each of those instruments. Some files for individual instruments are available online, and all Nesmith has to do is rearrange and mix them. Other times, Nesmith "plays" the information in himself. The result is not quite the same as live music, but it's far better than a CD. Closing my eyes during Calvin's performance of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, I'm briefly transported from this wood-paneled, teal-carpeted church in Carmel to a soaring cathedral in Budapest.
Nesmith yes, we're talking about the former member of the Monkees is a bona fide digital media visionary. A pioneer of music television and an author of early hypertext fiction, he also helped produce the films Repo Man and Tapeheads and started the seminal home video company Pacific Arts. Not surprisingly, his current project has met some resistance. Most of the Carmel congregation seems to appreciate Calvin (Nesmith says some wept during its first performance of the Adagio), but a few churchgoers have grumbled. Machine-made music in their place of worship? No thanks. Plus, the regular organist feels threatened. "I can't play like that," she told Nesmith after Calvin's inaugural show.
Nesmith doesn't intend to put musicians out of work, but in his soft-spoken way he is on a mission. "Typically, church music hasn't been at the top of my list of things that are inspiring," he says, fiddling with Calvin's controls. "If I'm in a good environment where people can really sing and play, that for me turns into church. That's as high as I get." Nesmith leans back as the opening chords of Ravel's exquisite Pavane pour une infante défunte spread through the sanctuary. "At least," he says, "this is played well."

"Rockers on Broadway." you won't get any results if you look for Rockers 2007.
There are 39 pictures of the event, most if not all with Micky in them, but
only one single shot of Micky alone. They're all great, and he looks fabulous
as always. He always was my favorite Monkee.

Sandy called today to say that Jerry Renino had been found dead in his home. He was touring with Peter Noone and missed a few shows, so they sent someone to his house to check up on him. It appears he'd been dead for about a week and a half. No results from the autopsy yet. He'd been having a run of bad luck lately - dog died, marriage over, was losing his house and moving in with mom and dad - so it's possible that had something to do with it. A very sad way to go. :(

Making The Monkees Documentary
"MAKING THE MONKEES," a documentary Peter Tork, David Jones and Micky Dolenz filmed in the fall of 2006 and early 2007 for BBC4 has been completed. The official premiere air date is:

"CBS Oldies KRTH (K-EARTH 101)/LOS ANGELES’ morning show host GARY BRYAN has started a petition to get THE MONKEES into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. The first person to sign the petition was Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame songwriter and artist BRIAN WILSON of the BEACH BOYS. While THE MONKEES already have a star on the HOLLYWOOD Walk of Fame, they have yet to join the honorees of the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Their TV show, "THE MONKEES," aired 58 episodes during 1966-67 and left a lasting impression on a generation with a series of hits including "Last Train to Clarksville," "I’m A Believer" and "Daydream Believer."
BRYAN noted, "THE MONKEES are a significant part of rock n’ roll history. The huge response from their fans is not surprising since they sold 150 million albums and toured worldwide as a real band."

"So you better get ready," shouts the theme to the
Monkees' 1960s TV series, "we may be comin' to your
town!"
Unless your town is Cleveland.
Peter Tork says the Monkees merit consideration for
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but that one man
opposes their induction.
"The only person . . . holding a grudge is Jann Wenner
of Rolling Stone," the former Monkee says. The
magazine editor "has never written a gracious word. He
personally has the veto power to keep us out."
Not the Animals, the Rascals, the Lovin' Spoonful, the
Dells, Del Shannon, Frankie Lymon or Black Sabbath has
more top-20 singles than the Monkees' 10.
Bands as disparate as the Sex Pistols (Steppin'
Stone), Run-D.M.C. (Mary, Mary) and the Church
(Porpoise Song) have covered Monkees songs. Even
Radiohead's Go to Sleep eerily channels Micky Dolenz's
vocals.
"I'm convinced that Micky is one of the great singers
of our time," Tork says. "He's always been something
of a genius."
One notable fan is Michael Stipe, who reportedly vowed
to bar R.E.M. from the hall until the Monkees got in.
Stipe declined to comment, but, in 1994, he did tell
Rolling Stone, "The Monkees . . . meant a lot more to
me" than the Beatles. R.E.M. was finally inducted last
month.
Wenner -- who didn't reply to an interview request --
allegedly denounces Tork, Dolenz, Davy Jones and Mike
Nesmith for not playing their own instruments on the
band's earliest albums.
In this American Idol era, when acts are
"manufactured" like toasters, fewer critics crucify
the Monkees for being a TV show that spawned a band.
"I've not heard the slightest murmur about the Monkees
being fake," Tork, 65, says from his Connecticut home.
"Everybody's forgotten it except Wenner. He's been
vicious."
Backed by producer Don Kirshner's songwriting stable
-- Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Neil Diamond, Neil
Sedaka, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart -- the band
unleashed four straight No. 1 albums and three
chart-toppers. The singers eventually penned their own
catchy pop, albeit with less chart success.
Tork -- who plays guitar, banjo, piano and bass -- is
touring with the Shoe Suede Blues Band, which includes
guitarist Richard Mikuls, bassist Arnold Jacks and
drummer Jeff Olson.

Jerry Renino
Jerry has been the bass player working with the Monkees individually
and collectively for many years. He started out in the '80's with the
Peter Tork Project, with Peter, Derek Lord (who wrote "Vagabond John")
on drums, and Scott Avitabile on guitar. Then in 1989 Jerry was the
bass player on the Monkees tour. After that his band, Breakaway,
became Davy's band (Jerrry, Steve Avitabile on keyboards, VJ Riccitelli
on drums, Rory Gordon on guitar with the addition of Steve Barlotta on
tenor sax). The band then added Wayne Avers (guitar) and Jimmy
Riccitelli, VJ's brother, on keyboards.
Over the years Jerry performed with Davy, with Micky, with Peter, with
various combinations of 2 or 3 of them, and then worked with a lot of
other artists such as Peter Noone.
Jerry was a terrific guy - always quick with a joke, very considerate &
patient with the fans. He came from a very musical family - all 4
brothers AND his sister play instruments. Jerry went to SUNY Oswego as
a music major, which is why we thought establishing a music scholarship
in his name would be a wonderful way to honor his memory. His family
is thrilled, and extremely grateful for any and all contributions -
even $5 or $10 will help build the scholarship up to eventually become
fully endowed.

Diane Medas had the idea to pay a lasting and on-going tribute to Jerry by setting up a music scholarship at Jerry's alma mater, SUNY Oswego, in his name. So, it's been done! Every year a music major will receive a scholarship in Jerry's name.
It takes $10,000 for a "fully endowed" scholarship, which means that the fund earns interest and the interest is awarded every year. Until we can reach that amount, the fund would only be able to give out about $100 per year, so please spread the word to everyone you know who might be interested in contributing. I'm sure his family would be thrilled if we could raise the entire amount from his fans and friends.

Jerry Renino has left this life. We buried him this morning with a very moving and dignified service. He was surrounded by people who not only loved the man, but also his imperfections.
Jerry was a loyal and steadfast friend, employee, employer, and most importantly a very genuine, creative and gentle human being. He was a rock for many individuals, myself inclued.
To continue to speculate regarding the circumstances which lead Jerry to leave us far too soon cannot bring him back. The continued spread of rumor and misinformation will only serve to tarnish the wonderful legacy that he has so deeply embedded into all of us who were fortunate to have known him well.
"Bad Luck" shadows those who are unprepared, and this is certainly not something that could be said of Jerry Renino.
Please, let's celebrate the life of this wonderful man and hold his memory with the dignity and respect of which he is so deserving.

Just found out that Micky is going to be in 2 concerts in the Toronto
area. June 15th is in Mississauga (Ontario) at the Hershey Centre and
June 16th is in Hamilton (Ontario) at Copps Coliseum. Tickets wont go
on sale til 4-6 weeks before the date apparently. These concerts are
usually more than 2 or 3 acts but so far Micky is the only one on the
bill. The promotors also said they were having two members of the
Monkees but no venue will confirm that.

Last night(2/17/07) Davy gave a great concert at the
State Fair in Tampa, Florida. His show lasted almost 2
hours including his encore. After the show he signed
autographs but was unable to pose for pictures with
the fans due to the long line of people waiting. I was
lucky enough to pose for a picture with one of his
band members and get some of their autographs as well.

About The Monkees Deluxe Editions-
Tell your friends. After nearly a yearlong wait, we are finally ready
to unleash the latest of our restored Monkees reissues. In addition
to new liner notes, previously unseen photos and unbelievable
packaging, here's what you can expect from the releases on July 10th.
HEADQUARTERS:
Presented in both original mono and stereo mixes, this landmark
recording has been newly mastered. In particular, the stereo mix is
sourced from a different tape than the 1995 Rhino CD. As for the
bonus tracks, they hail from a variety of sources. Let's run them
down and explain.
Disc One:
"All Of Your Toys" (stereo remix) this is a newly created stereo
mix compiled by resynching the various stages of the production multi
tracks. This resynching allowed for greater separation of the
instruments in the mix and fuller fidelity.
"The Girl I Knew Somewhere" (version one, stereo remix) The Michael
Nesmith sung recording of this song appears on this collection for
the first time in stereo. This new mix was achieved by resynching
various stages of the production multi tracks allowing for a
different and longer mix.
"A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" (stereo remix) This is perhaps
the first complete stereo mix of this track that has ever appeared.
Previous stereo mixes lacked the final overdubs heard on the single.
They're all here in wide stereo and superior fidelity.
"She Hangs Out" (single version stereo remix) The legendary
withdrawn version of this song appears on this collection for the
first time in stereo! Listen out for some extra studio chat and a
cool vocal ad lib at the end from Davy and Jeff Barry.
"Love To Love" (stereo remix) This fresh remix of "Love To Love"
features a better representation of what appeared on the original
mono mix.
"You Can't Tie A Mustang Down" (stereo remix) This remix features
some previously unheard vocal work from Davy and appears in full
fidelity stereo.
"If I Learned To Play The Violin" (stereo remix) All the elements
of this track were resynched for a first time true stereo mix with a
longer fade.
"99 Pounds" (stereo remix) A first time true stereo mix for this
Changes album track!
"The Girl I Knew Somewhere" (single version stereo remix) - This is
a newly created stereo mix compiled by resynching the various stages
of the production multi tracks. This resynching allowed for greater
separation of the instruments in the mix and fuller fidelity, as well
as a nice long fade.
"Randy Scouse Git" This is one of the alternate takes that
previously appeared on the Headquarters Sessions set.
"Tema Dei Monkees" A new stereo mix of the raw multi-track. You
hear every last little bit of Italian that Micky muttered at the
March 1967 session.
Disc Two:
"All Of Your Toys" (mono mix) This is the original mono mix made in
early 1967 for the aborted single release of "Toys." Note that this
mix lacks some of the final overdubs that are heard on Disc One's
stereo remix.
"The Girl I Knew Somewhere" (version one, mono mix) This newly
discovered original Mike sung mono mix from 1967 is previously
unissued.
"A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" (mono single mix) Forty years
after it was first issued, "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"
appears for the first time on CD in it's original hit single mono mix!
"She Hangs Out" (mono single mix) The legendary withdrawn version
in its original mono mix from 1967 (with a bit of pre-song warm-up).
"The Girl I Knew Somewhere" (mono single mix) The original mono hit
single version!
"Nine Times Blue" (demo) Nesmith's '67 solo demo newly mixed and
mastered.
"She'll Be There" & "Midnight Train" (demo) newly mixed in stereo.
"Peter Gunn's Gun" - A vintage Headquarters jam, newly mixed.
"Jericho" & "Pillow Time" (demo) both appear as heard on the rare
Headquarters sessions set.
PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES, LTD.
Presented in both mono and stereo mixes, this landmark recording has
been newly mastered. In particular, the stereo mix is sourced from
the first generation original stereo master mixes. Also of note, the
mono mix has never appeared in full on CD. As for the bonus tracks,
they hail from a variety of sources. Let's run them down and explain.
Disc One:
"Goin' Down" the original stereo mix from 1967.
"Salesman" a new stereo mix featuring a longer fade, Nez's
cigarette rolling rap, plus some previously unheard chat and vocals.
"She Hangs Out" a new stereo mix of the four track master prior to
the addition of Shorty Rogers' brass arrangement. Features a longer
intro, a longer outro and other anomalies.
"Love Is Only Sleeping" a new mix of the version that appeared on
the '95 CD with some extra studio chat.
"What Am I Doing Hangin' `Round?" features a never before heard
lead vocal performance from Michael Nesmith (and a longer ending).
"Star Collector" - a new stereo mix of the four-track master prior to
the addition of the Moog synthesizer overdubs. Features a longer
intro, a longer outro and other anomalies this is the longest
version ever!
"Riu Chiu" the original television recording featuring all four
Monkees on vocals appears here for the first time on CD.
DISC TWO:
"Special Announcement," "Salesman" (alternate mix), "Cuddly Toy"
(alternate mix) these tracks are the original 1967 mixes as they
were set to appear on an early line-up of the album. By programming
your CD player, you can recreate the original sequence for the
original sequence.
"Goin' Down" the original hit single mix (albeit with a longer
fade).
"The Door Into Summer" (alternate mix) the previously issued
alternate mono mix from 1967 featuring a different vocal performance
from Nesmith.
"Daily Nightly" a previously unissued mono mix of this song lacking
Micky's Moog synthesizer overdubs.
"Star Collector" a previously unissued long mono mix of this song
featuring Moog aplenty!
And what about the single?
If you buy both CD's from monkees.com or rhino.com you get a free 7-
inch vinyl single (a limited edition of 2500) of two unissued
tracks. "I Didn't Know You Had It In You Sally" was taped for the
group in February '67, but Micky didn't lay his vocal on the track
till '69. The flipside is an alternate mix of "Daydream Believer"
before the addition of brass and strings. It features a cool extended
ending. The single comes in an old-fashioned picture sleeve that is
sure to delight.

Sad news today for the older Aussies.
Lynne Randall who was a popular singer here in the 60's passed away.
She had toured in the US with The Monkees and Jimi Hendrix.
Some of your 1st generation fans who went to the original shows may
remember her.
Sadly she had a long term drug addiction which started when she became
addicted to drugs while on tour.

Actor Andre Philippe died April 29 of congestive heart failure in
Venice, Calif. He was 79.
During the 1960s, Philippe was a fixture on episodic television programs
including "Wild, Wild West," "Bonanza," "Get Smart," "That Girl,"
"Combat" and "Hawaiian Eye," on which he appeared 11 times.
Born Everett Cooper in the Bronx, NY, he served in WWII and then went to
Paris, where he adopted the name Andre Philippe while singing in
nightclubs.
His singing career led to an active television career throughout the
1960s. Philippe had a long friendship with Paul Mazursky and appeared in
Mazursky's films "Alex in Wonderland," "Harry and Tonto," "Bob & Carol &
Ted & Alice," "Down & Out in Beverly Hills," "Scenes from a Mall" and
"The Pickle." He later appeared on TV shows including "Medical Center,"
"Charlie's Angels" and "Magnum P.I."
He is survived by his brother, voice coach Dr. Morton Cooper.
Philippe is forever ingrained into the memories of Monkees fans in his
guest role as shady rival band manager Nick Trump in Episode No. 4 of
The Monkees TV series, "Your Friendly Neighborhood Kidnappers".

I don't think I have seen anyone post yet that the invention of Liquid Paper by Mike's mother, Bette Nesmith, was the topic of the opening paragraph of "Do You Have a Better Idea?" by Ian Ayres and Barry Nalebuff in the March 25, 2007 issue of Parade Magazine.
The paragraph reads, "Back in the days of typewriters, the mother of Monkees guitarist Mike Nesmith got tired of retyping to correct mistakes. So Bette Nesmith cooked up the first batch of Liquid Paper in a blender and poured it into a nail-polish container. She eventually sold the business to Gillette for $48 million."

Celebrate the Season parade
How's this for an odd group of Celebrate the Season stars: Zachary Quinto, Peter Tork and Santa Claus. They join mascots, musical acts and floats carrying entertainers and sports celebs as part of the annual Celebrate the Season Parade that marches through Fifth Avenue, Downtown, from 9-11 p.m. Saturday. Along with the WPXI reporters checking in for the parade telecast, Pittsburgher Quinto -- Sylar on NBC's "Heroes" and Spock in the upcoming "Star Trek" film -- and Tork -- one-fourth of the TV-made '70s boy band, the Monkees -- will help Pittsburgh kick off the season.

Just wanted to alert everyone that Davy was on The O'Reilly Factor on June 14th on FoxNews. He was on to discuss efforts by Rolling Stone magazine to keep The Monkees out of the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. They showed lots of clips from the show and the guys on tour as Bill O'Reilly interviewed Davy. Davy commented on how The Monkees performed with leading 1960s musicians and how they were part of the culture at the time. O'Reilly pointed out that they have sold 65 million records and that American Idol is doing the very same sort of auditions today to find talent that were done to form The Monkees. O'Reilly said he thought The Monkees should be in the Hall of Fame and that he was going to do what he could to make that happen.

Rolling Stone magazine is leading an effort to ban the Monkees, the made-for-TV band, from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Former Monkees singer Davey Jones sounded rather nonchalant about the controversy. "I haven't really thought much about it. As far as being a legitimate group, I don't really know what that means. But the Monkees withstood the test of time." The Factor contended that Jones and his mates deserve to be enshrined. "You guys sold 65-million records, and many groups in the Hall of Fame don't come close to that. You were a phenomenon and people still hum your tunes, so you guys have to be in there."

Micky Dolenz exploded into national fame when the Beatles-inspired TV series, The Monkees, debuted in 1966. The show’s high-energy comedy, songs written by top tunesmiths of the day and the charismatic four young men who starred as a fictional band called the Monkees made it an instant hit.
At the crest of Monkeemania, the Monkees replaced the maturing, fame-weary Beatles on the covers of American teen magazines. Although the diminutive Davy Jones won the hearts of millions of girls, it was Dolenz who sang The Monkees series’ theme and many of the group’s hit singles and album tracks.
Dolenz, Jones and fellow Monkees Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith sold more than 65 million records. They performed for thousands of screaming fans and starred in the 1968 cult classic, Head, written by no less than Jack Nicholson.
When Dolenz brings his Micky’s Monkees Christmas to the Manship Theatre Saturday, he’ll embrace his inescapable Monkees legacy. In addition to traditional Christmas music and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” Dolenz will perform such Monkees hits as “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer.”
While Davy Jones sang the original recording of “Daydream Believer,” Dolenz doesn’t let that stop him from singing it at his solo shows.
“I acknowledge that David sang it,” Dolenz said last week from his home in Los Angeles. “And David does the same thing in his show (when he sings material originally performed by Dolenz).”
Dolenz also plays guitar during his performances and, depending on the venue, he may assume his Monkees role as a drummer. He’ll be joined Saturday by a six-piece band and his sister, Coco, who sang backup for Monkees recordings.
“Our parents taught us how to sing when we were kids,” Dolenz said. “We do a couple of songs we learned when we were kids. We’ve been singing together for so long that we have an incredible, Everly Brothers kind of harmony thing going on. So she’s an integral part of the show.”
After Monkeemania ebbed in the late ’60s, Dolenz appeared in theatrical productions on Broadway and in London and directed and produced television programs in the United States and England. Still, he knows that mention of the Monkees may always be the first line in any print or broadcast story about him.
“The same thing happens with Paul McCartney and whoever,” Dolenz said. “I don’t mind that, because I understand how success can overshadow anything else I’ve ever done.”
Yet there was a time when Monkeemania was a dim and distant memory. In 1977, Dolenz went to London to star in the Harry Nilsson musical, The Point. He stayed in England for 12 years, becoming a producer-director for the BBC and London Weekend Television. He also directed music videos and the Monty Python-associated film, The Box.
But Dolenz was thrust into Monkeemania again in 1986, the 20th anniversary year of the Monkees’ TV debut. MTV rebroadcast the series; Dolenz and Tork recorded a new album; the original Monkees recordings were reissued; and Dolenz, Tork and Jones performed a reunion tour.
The renewed attention was a shock.
“I hadn’t sung, hadn’t heard anything about the Monkees,” Dolenz said. “And I came over here and it just exploded. We were the biggest tour that year.”
During the 20th anniversary tour Dolenz developed a fresh appreciation for the Monkees.
“After revisiting the music and looking at the TV shows and doing interviews, I realized that, if you go back to the genesis of it, it’s not so surprising.”
The Monkees’ TV series and movie, Dolenz said, benefited from such behind-the-scenes talent as producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider and writers Paul Mazursky and Jack Nicholson. Monkees songs were written by Neil Diamond, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, Paul Williams, Carole Bayer Sager and Neil Sedaka.
“And then you put the four of us into the mix,” Dolenz said. “I like to think we had something do to with it. You add all of that up, all of those incredibly talented people and, well, it’s not such a surprise. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. It’s that little bit of magic that happens in show business.”
