Here's an excerpt from one of the chapters pertaining to THE MONKEES:

Today we're going to examine the
FACTS and FABLES concerning another one of THE MONKEES' biggest hits.

In his book HOW TO WRITE A HIT SONG...AND SELL IT, TOMMY BOYCE tells a funny, interesting story revolving around one of THE MONKEES' last big hits.

THE MONKEES were always being supplied new musical material from a virtual who's who of songwriters: NEIL DIAMOND, GERRY GOFFIN and CAROLE KING, NILSSON, NEIL SEDAKA and DAVID GATES (later of BREAD) all had their songs recorded by the band in the first couple of years. In addition, MICKY DOLENZ, DAVY JONES, PETER TORK and, most frequently, MIKE NESMITH were submitting their OWN compositions for consideration. Therefore, as time wore on, when BOYCE AND HART were called upon to supply a song, they pretty much needed to have one "at the ready."

THE FABLE:
According to BOYCE's account (as published in his book), back in the day when DON KIRSHNER oversaw those musical selections, he called BOYCE AND HART one morning and told TOMMY (who just happened to answer the phone... BOBBY was still sound asleep) that he had a dream last night that the title of THE MONKEES' next #1 Record should be a girl's name. Spontaneously, TOMMY BOYCE replied, "Donnie, you won't believe this!!! But, last night while you were having that dream, BOBBY and I wrote an unbelievably great song for THE MONKEES...and, are you ready for this?...it has a girl's name in the title!"
KIRSHNER was flabbergasted! "Tell me the title, quick! I want to hear it! What's her name?"
Of course, TOMMY couldn't comply...the song hadn't been written yet! "Donnie, her name is so beautiful and so exciting that I couldn't possibly tell it to you over the phone. But I'll tell you what...you're going to love it when you hear it tomorrow." Despite KIRSHNER's insistence that TOMMY come over now and play him the song...or, better yet, that KIRSHNER drop by THEIR place to hear the tune (that hadn't yet been written!), TOMMY finally stalled him with the excuse that BOBBY was still sleeping. (Of course, HART didn't know ANY of this as he really WAS still asleep...and had no idea what TOMMY had just committed them to!)
KIRSHNER was adamant..."How about noon TODAY at my place?!?!" BOYCE says it was more of a command than a question. "Okay," he said, giving in, "but do me a favor. Please have everyone there who's connected with the television show." KIRSHNER agreed to assemble producers BERT SCHNEIDER and BOB RAPHELSON, vice president LESTER SILL, and chairman-of-the-board JACKIE COOPER. (Nothing like putting a little more pressure on the situation!!!)
At 10:00 BOYCE decided to wake BOBBY and tell him the news...after all, having just committed to writing the next #1 song in America was a pretty big deal!!! Realizing the pressure they were under, both songwriters quickly began making a list of girls' names but none particularly struck their fancy. TOMMY had the beginnings of a melody but they just weren't able to put it together with any of the names on the list. They decided to take a drive, hoping for inspiration (or divine intervention). At 11:00, while driving along Mulholland Drive, TOMMY finally asked BOBBY to "reach deep into your past for a recollection of one girl in your life, or even in your dreams, that you had never told anybody about." HART gave it some thought and then replied that there WAS a girl in High School that he liked a lot but she never returned the favor. He would think about her every once in a while over the years and once had even written a song about her. "I was never too hot on the song," he said, "but what I liked about it was the name, which was hers."
"Come on, BOBBY," TOMMY exclaimed, "tell me her name and my melody will flow right out to meet her." And, of course, BOBBY then replied, "And her name was VALLERI"...which INSTANTLY fit the melody that TOMMY had been working on! Now fifteen minutes away from their meeting at KIRSHNER's house, that left them all of twelve minutes to complete the song!!! They got as far as "There's a girl I know who makes me feel so good" which, along with the chorus, "and her name is Valleri...I love you, Valleri" was all they had when they pulled into the driveway.
BOYCE was banking on the fact that KIRSHNER had wanted a song with a girl's name in the title SO badly...and the fact that he had already told him about the GREAT song they had written "the night before"...that the conditions were, in effect, pre-programmed for them to present THE MONKEES' next big smash hit single. (With all those executives sitting in the room waiting for the debut, the anticipation was exceptionally high...TOMMY believed that ANY song they would have played based around a girl's name would have qualified as "exactly what they were looking for.")

...for the rest of the story - please contact The60sShop@aol.com and ask to be added to the BOYCE AND HART mailing list and I will be happy to send them a copy of the entire series.

For the past five years, I have been publishing an online music newsletter called FORGOTTEN HITS. For the most part, we spotlight songs and artists that, although very popular at the time of their original release, get little or no airplay anymore due to the tight programming lists of the oldies radio station conglomerates, who figure that we would rather hear the same 50-60 songs over and over and over again! From time to time, we feature a particular artist in depth...and we just recently completed a 17-part series on the songs of TOMMY BOYCE AND BOBBY HART. Naturally, several chapters cover their work with THE MONKEES and I thought many of the folks on your mailing list would enjoy reading this series...we've gotten some GREAT reviews!!!

Thanks for any assistance you can offer in getting the word out...and for helping to keep this great music alive.

1965 was the year that the pilot episode of "The Monkees", a TV show about a musical band was filmed with four unknown actor musicians. To begin the celebration, Randi Massingill has updated her sell-out first edition of the biography of Monkee Michael "Wool-Hat" Nesmith with updated information and additional photos.

"Total Control: The Monkees Michael Nesmith Story" follows the exciting life of the unofficial leader of The Monkees from his upbringing in Texas, fame and fortune as Americas favorite TV band, his critically acclaimed country rock solo career with the First National Band, and then his own record company Pacific Arts, which was destroyed at the hands of PBS by multi-million dollar lawsuits.

The famous facts are all covered in this new book, including the details on how his mother came to invent the Liquid Paper correction fluid, Nesmith's invention of the MTV cable TV network, and his win of the first Grammy award in the category of home video for "Elephant Parts".

This new edition is a complete re-write of the 1997 edition which features updates on the 30 year reunion of all 4 Monkees for concert dates and an ABC primetime TV special. "Total Control" updated edition also features 75 new photos, 2 new updated chapters with the latest on all four Monkees, and the only known photo of Michael with his father.

Collectors and fans of The Monkees as well as entertainment historians will love this book which contains numerous interview on the excesses of 60's TV production in the story of a performer who made a fortune and lost it - twice!

Micky took the stage right on time coming out to the Monkees theme song and quickly breaking into "last Train to Clarksville". He had a full band behind him much like the 2002 tour as a matter of fact there was some familiar faces in the band. Also of note was that his sister Coco was on stage with him playing tambourine and doing back up vocals. He also brought her forward to perform some duets and solo songs. He hit the classics as well as some of his solo work it was a nice mix. He played for a solid hour and also revealed a little Monkee trivia. He performed a song entitled "Too Much Monkee Business" he stated he played this during his audition for The Monkees. After the show both he and Coco came out to sign autographs and meet the fans. Another great performance by Mr. Dolenz.

February 25th, I had the pleasure of seeing Micky and Coco perform at the
Wolf Den, Mohegan Sun Casino, in CT. Feel free to visit my website for pictures
and a review at www.taralane.com/katherine. This show is linked at the lower
left side of the page under Monkee related events and then under the
subheading of Micky. On the far right, if you are interested you can find Peter Tork's
latest associated band, Jeff Pitchell and the Texas Floods. Right after the
Micky show, I attended a Jeff Pitchell show in Manchester. The pictures for
that show are not up yet, but, I expect that they will be shortly.

Oh, incase you don't check out my site, I wanted to share the highlight of my
evening at Mohegan Sun. I got to sing part of Going Down with Micky again!
Thrill of a lifetime for me... Also, I met Donna Dolenz. She is a wonderful
woman!

I'm going to see Peter again this coming weekend in Stanhope, NJ. I hope to
see some of you there for a great show! I hear that they just may be doing
Dress Sexy For Me! One can only hope.

Jack Keller, wrote 'Bewitched' tune, dies
Posted on Fri, Apr. 01, 2005
Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Pop songwriter Jack Keller, who wrote the theme song for "Bewitched" and other TV sitcoms and was a producer on the Monkees' first album, died Friday. He was 68.

Keller had leukemia, according to his son, Jordan Keller.

The son of a musician, Keller got his big break when he joined Aldon Music, Don Kirschner's Brill Building publishing company, which also employed a stable of young pop songwriters including Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, and Howard Greenfield.

Keller and Greenfield wrote "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" and "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own," both No. 1 hits for Connie Francis in 1960, and "Venus in Blue Jeans" for Jimmy Clanton.

After Aldon was purchased by the TV production company Screen Gems, Keller and Greenfield wrote the theme song for the shows "Bewitched" and "Gidget."

The TV work led Keller to the Monkees, getting producer credit on their TV theme song and first album.

Ex-Monkee Micky Dolenz is a new voice at drive time
Friday, April 1, 2005
By ED BEESON
HERALD NEWS

Who says you can't teach an old Monkee new tricks?

Micky Dolenz, the former drummer and singer for The Monkees, the sitcom-spawned rock band of the 1960s, thinks he can still learn a few. Now a jock with the oldies station WCBS-FM 101.1, Dolenz is betting he can transition into something new - live, unscripted radio.

As an actor, Dolenz has always worked with a script. Even his role as a drummer was scripted. He was cast as one on "The Monkees" without knowing how to play a single beat.

The same could be said of his jump into radio. After all, Dolenz famously sang "I'm a Believer."

Especially when WCBS made him a good offer.

"To be offered a major radio show in a major market on a major station is not something you take lightly," Dolenz said recently from his office at WCBS, on the 40th floor of the Viacom building in Times Square. Even if that means he now tries to go to sleep by 8 p.m., and wake before even the roosters rustle.

His show, "Micky Dolenz in the Morning," which began Jan. 10, airs live every weekday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. It is a difficult hour to learn a new craft, perhaps more so at his age. Dolenz is no longer a 20-year-old rock-'n'-roll hunk full of vigor. He is a 60-year-old man, thrice married, four times a father and, on this brisk March morning, an exhausted performer.

Insomnia the night before had sapped his energy for the day, which began, as weekdays now do, at 4:30 a.m. Earlier, during a commercial break, Dolenz was quiet, nearly remote. "I think I'm not biologically set up to do early mornings," he said, the lines of fatigue evident in his face.

But then, he leaned into the microphone by his face and belted, "Spring! Let's hear it for spring!"

Good morning, New York, New Jersey and beyond. It's 8 a.m. Micky Dolenz is awake, alert (sort of) and back from commercial break.

Joining him is a nearly three-decade veteran of radio, the mustachioed DJ Mike Fitzgerald. His right-hand man is Brucer the Producer, the barrel-chested man born Bruce Goldberg. Mr. G., or Irv Gikofsky, broadcasts the weather from the comfort of his home, while Karen Stewart is the show's newscaster.

And Dolenz? "I am what they call 'color,' " he said.

Some might wonder why a powerhouse radio station would take a chance on an untested talent.

"Well, they want a star who's going to get the people to tune in," Fitzgerald said to Dolenz.

Over the past decade, radio stations of all formats have tended to gravitate toward celebrity hosts, especially for their personality-driven morning shows, says Sean Ross, vice president of music and programming at Edison Research Media, a radio research firm in Somerville. It is believed, Ross says, that celebrities not only draw curious listeners, but their very lives provide a unique perspective.

There is some proof for this. The soul crooner Isaac Hayes once co-hosted a successful morning show for New York's Kiss 98.7. Millie Jackson, the Georgia-born, New Jersey-raised R&B singer from the 1970s, has broadcast a daily show for years for KKDA 730 in Dallas. Danny Bonaduce, the former child star whose career bears an uncanny resemblance to Dolenz's, co-hosts a morning show for Los Angeles' Star 98.7.

But Dolenz seems cast as part of the bigger picture of WCBS.

"He understands that he's creating a bridge into the future for the radio station," says Theresa Beyer, the station's marketing director. His morning show, along with a slew of other changes, is expected to replenish the station's audience with newer and relatively younger listeners. "At one point, the station had a little bit of a dustier image."

Like many oldies stations nowadays, WCBS is attempting to correct that.

"Around the country, oldies stations are going through changes," Ross says. Some stations, like WCBS, play more songs from the 1970s to grab a relatively younger audience, he says. Others are simply closing shop because they aged out of their market. "The ones that are doing the best now are the ones that have real morning shows."

And WCBS has not done as well since Harry Harrison, the self-titled "Morning Mayor" and a four-decade veteran of New York radio, retired from his weekday morning show. His replacement, an afternoon DJ named Dan Taylor, sank in the ratings. From winter 2002 to winter 2004, the morning show plummeted from a tie for sixth place to a tie for 12th, according to Arbitron ratings data.

Last fall, incoming program director Dave Logan replaced Taylor with Fitzgerald, a former night DJ. Then he began to search for a morning crew.

Serendipity brought a golden opportunity.

Last October, Dolenz dropped by for an on-air interview. He unwittingly impressed management with his easygoing humor and smooth rapport with Fitzgerald. Logan offered Dolenz the morning show. At the time, Dolenz had finished a two-year run with the musical "Aida," including eight months on Broadway. He needed work. Not that he was desperate.

"I have a lot of interests. I have an awful lot of interests," Dolenz said. He recently tried out for a television pilot with WCBS' blessing, he said - and sold a children's book to Penguin Books and, to a big manufacturer, "an invention, a household device" that he described only as "boring."

Also, about once a month, Dolenz hits the road with his sister Coco to perform a repertoire of Monkees songs and originals at places like the Marie Irwin Center in Homewood, Ill., or the Mountaineer Race Track and Resort on Route 2 in Chester, W.Va.

WCBS' offer trumped that.

Admittedly, "Micky Dolenz in the Morning" was rough when it launched, Logan says. Dolenz tended to be too tense on-air, causing many of his jokes to fall flat.

But over time, Dolenz has found his niche. "We dipped and now we're on our way up," Logan says.

Dolenz admits as much. "The show for me is like learning to ride a bicycle by learning on a Harley. With no training wheels," he says.

"For the first couple weeks, I was like a deer caught in the headlights," he said from the counch in his office after a recent show. "Thank God for people like Mike, or I would have totally just jumped off a cliff."

"Yeah, but you're a fast learner," Fitzgerald said, as he was leaving for the day. "Since you got back," from a recent vacation to England, "you jumped up a level."

Fitzgerald kept the good cheer coming: "Right now, I'd have to say, is the height of my career."

"Oh, cool," Dolenz chirped.

Dolenz's most striking feature is his smile. Of all the Monkees, his smile was the widest. It stretched across his face as wide as a banana and toothsome as an ear of corn. His smile made him look like a goofball, if not actually a monkey. If anything, it set him apart from his former bandmates: the demure Michael Nesmith, the leaden Davy Jones, the hazy-eyed Peter Tork.

WCBS' photos of Dolenz show off that smile. They also give the appearance that Dolenz has a fuller head of hair and broader shoulders than he actually has. But Dolenz's smile may not be the first thing people notice nowadays. Before meeting two reporters recently, Dolenz pulled a comb from his pocket and ran it through his thinning hair. He didn't smile, but shook hands in a slightly officious manner, formal, but polite.

Then he spoke. "Hi," he said.

Dolenz is a curiosity on the airwaves because of his voice. Flip the dial during the morning rush hour and hear nearly every jock booming a thunderous basso. Not so Dolenz, who squeaks, by comparison. His, however, is an endearing voice, lilted like the character Piglet from "Winnie the Pooh."

Combine that with his refined, wordy politeness and he is a charmer. From his office, he asked if a reporter calling from West Virginia planned to attend Dolenz's concert in the state. "If you do, you must do please look me up," he said.

But niceties aren't what the on-air Micky Dolenz is about. He counts his best qualities as "the ad-libs, the impromptu, my twisted observations." The more Dolenz settles into his role, the more his humor grows absurd, perhaps unhinged - almost as if he has nothing to lose.

"What's up?" a deep-voiced caller asked.

"Well, we're having a contest and you called in," Dolenz chimed.

Last Tuesday, a middle-aged caller fell into near-hysterics when she heard Dolenz speaking to her. Dolenz responded with hysterics of his own, sounding as if Goldberg was tickling him with a feather. Then the former Monkee abruptly halted and asked the woman for her answer to his contest question.

Gradually, Dolenz is creating more content for the show. "That's a great idea, Micky, to pull that thing up, because people are traveling all the time," Goldberg said after Dolenz read off several travel advisories from an air traffic control Web site. "That's a great idea."

When the singer Mario Vazquez walked off the set of "American Idol," it gave Dolenz another idea.

"That's the biggest story in the nation. If we could get a scoop on that, man. Do you think he's a fan?" he said.

"Ahh ..." Goldberg responded.

It may not have been a bad idea. Dolenz has shown himself to be an entertaining interviewer, which may be surprising as he says he had never interviewed anyone before this job.

"It's like a dance. You don't want to put too much of an imprint on him. You want Micky to be Micky," Goldberg said after coaching Dolenz for an interview with Percy Sledge, the soul singer and recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

"Now the newest abductee to the Rock and Woll ..." Dolenz said into his microphone.

"Abductee?" Goldberg said.

It is unclear how canned this humor is. But word flubs now seem to be a part of his shtick.

And that, amid a sea of perfectly trained radio voices, is starting to sound fresh.

Micky Dolenz live in Cleveland, OH

Hi,

I wanted to share my review of Micky's recent performance in
Cleveland, OH with the rest of our group members.

Micky performed at the Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland, OH on
March 12. This is an annual event to commemorate the first rock
concert which was held in Cleveland by Alan Freed in the early 1950's.

Micky was the 2nd of 4 performers that night.

I was really looking forward to seeing Micky solo, as I have only seen
him perform as part of the Monkees before, and I was not disappointed.

Being that Micky was just a part of the entire show, his performance
lasted only 50 minutes or so. I would have preferred more, but
understand given the nature of this concert.

Micky played guitar throughout the show, and was backed by several
musicians, at least 6 or 7. Curiously, he never got behind the drum
set! Coco was also with him, and delivered 2 outstanding vocal
performances on Distant Drum and Runaway (the Del Shannon song) In
addition, Micky and Coco did a duet of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, which
for me was really a highlight. As much as I love the Monkees tunes,
it's so great to hear some unusual songs.

Speaking of the song selection, I thought it was a very well rounded
and diverse show, given the short amount of time he had to perform.
The usual hit songs were performed: Clarksville, Steppin Stone, I'm A
Believer, That Was Then, but Micky also sang a couple of Monkees tunes
that Davy originally sang - Daydream Believer & A Little Bit Me, as
well as the old standard "Since I Fell For You."

When introducing one of Davy's songs, Micky said "Let me adjust the
microphone stand" and lowered it all the way to the ground. In fact,
Micky fondly referred to both Mike and Davy, but no mention of Peter.
I'm not sure what to make of that.

Another surprise of the show was the appearance of Vance Brescia, the
writer of That Was Then, who appeared on stage with Micky to sing that
number. Turns out he is now the music director of Herman's Hermits
starring Peter Noone (who were also on the bill.) Some of you probably
knew that bit of info, but it was news to me!

My hope is that someday I'll get to see a full length show of Micky's
one day, but until then, I'm glad I had the opportunity to at least
see him perform.

Review of Micky's Show

Dolenz.

"The Monkees TV show is back on Brazilian TV"

The Brazilian television network "Rede 21", an open channel of nationwide reach, is airing The Monkees TV show on a weekly basis starting on April 28, 2005.
This is the result of a successful campaign led by the oldies site "Central RetroTV" with a little help from the International Association of The Monkees Fans, by means of the "Monkees Brasil" discussion group and site.
The inclusion of the show in the "Cult Series" segment of this prestigious TV channel is something to be celebrated and to be grateful for.

Davy Jones @ College of Staten Island

Davy Jones and his band performed Saturday 4/2 at the
College of Staten Island, Staten Island, New York. The
venue was a campus theatre which seemed to hold about
800 people and had excellent acoustics. The theatre
was about 3/4 filled and the New York area crowd was
extremely enthusiastic. Davy responded with one of his
best performances in recent years. He seemed to enjoy
playing a theatre instead of a casino or fairground,
and was in fine voice throughout the evening. Davy
showed amazing energy for someone who has been
performing for over 40 years and danced wildly during
the "Oliver" medley and "She Hangs Out". He sang his
best-ever rendition of "It's Nice To Be With You",
complete with occasional New York accent. Davy made
some short poignant comments about the life and death
of Pope John Paul and then dedicated a beautiful
performance of "I Wanna Be Free" to the deceased
religious leader. The unique setting gave alot of
additional time for stand-up style comedy, and Davy
delivered 5-10 minute jokes/bits between every song.
He claimed that Micky, Mike and Peter are in the
actors home in LA sharing a room with only one chair.
"Nesmith's got the chair", Davy said, and Micky and
Peter are "kneeling on the floor waiting for their
instructions". This was very funny considering Davy
and Mike's desire to control the project whenever the
Monkees work together. Sarcasm quickly turned to good
nature as Davy mentioned Micky's NYC radio show to
wild applause and performed a sprightly rendition of
Nez's "Papa Gene's Blues". He also plugged Shoe Suede
Blues in a nod to Peter Tork and said Peter was in a
group called "One Man Band", but quit because of
"creative differences". It was a terrific night and
you could tell by the many smiles that once again
people did not know that a member of the Monkees would
put on such a fantastic show. Hopefully Davy will
continue to play theatres of this kind so new and old
fans can really listen to and appreciate his
performance.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

Television has played such a huge part in all our lives, right down the years from childhood through to today. Perhaps "The Monkees" was one of those programmes you used to always watch after rushing home from a day at school in the 1960/70s, and the memory of which has stayed with you? If so, there’s an event you are not going to want to miss.

Cult TV are extremely proud to announce that one of the stars of The Monkees, Peter Tork, will be one of the guests at the 12th Annual Cult TV Festival taking place in Birmingham, UK, between October 28th and 31st 2005.

THE HISTORY BIT

Every year since 1994, the Cult TV Festival has entertained its attendees with a whole host of guests from right across the television spectrum. For those of you unfamiliar with the Festival, here’s some background.

The Festival itself covers a broad range on TV programming from SF to comedy, action adventure to animation, children’s series to drama, including series that you particularly search the TV listings for because of their quality, but perhaps seem unknown to most people. The sort of show that you view more than once, and perhaps buy the DVDs and merchandise for. Put simply, the Festival covers extraordinary fictional television.

The Cult TV Festival is a charity event run by fans for fans. In the previous 11 years we have raised GBP 41,000 (equivalent to 58,000 Euros or US$ 75,000) for charity.

CULT TV 2005

The Festival runs from noon Friday (28th) to noon Monday (31st) which, because the clocks go back one hour during the weekend, means 73 hours of non-stop entertainment and fun.

Guests can be from both in front of and behind the camera, as once again is proved this year from those announced so far. Aside from Peter Tork, they include:

John Saxon who has appeared in numerous TV series and who guest starred on "The Six Million Dollar Man" and over 100 feature films including ‘Enter the Dragon’ with Bruce Lee.

Kim Darby, who appeared as "Miri" in the classic "Star Trek" episode of the same name; she also appeared in the classic John Wayne western "True Grit", making her first UK event appearance.

Tanya Roberts, who was one of "Charlie’s Angels", as well as starring in numerous action films and the sit-com "That 70s Show".

Pamela Sue Martin, Fallon from "Dynasty", and the star of the 1970s "Nancy Drew Mysteries", who is making her first-ever European event appearance.

Guests who have worked on the BBCtv series "Doctor Who", both the original series that ran 26 years and the brand new series that started a few weeks ago here in the UK. These include new series Director, Brian Grant, William Russell, Michael Keating (who was also Vila in "Blake’s 7"), Philip Madoc, Michael Sheard, and the producer of the audio adventures "Doctor Who Unbound", John Ainsworth.

Check out the Cult TV website at www.cult.tv - click on the purple column and then "Star Guests 2005" for a full list of guests so far announced, as the list is growing by the week, or alternatively go directly to the list at: http://www.cult.tv/index.php?cm_id=35&cm_type=section.

As with all events of this type, all guests appear subject to work and personal commitments.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED MORE?

The guests are just one facet to this Festival. Cult TV is a multi-stream event, with many things happening at the same time throughout the weekend.

Cult TV Festival registration gives you:

· Fully researched celebrity guest interviews;

· Themed parties on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights;

· The 12th Annual Cult TV Awards Ceremony (Saturday night);

· Sunday night star cabaret (including Peter Tork, and Mitch Benn, star of BBC Radio 4’s "The Now Show");

· Workshops, demonstrations and discussion groups;

· A "Fanstrand" containing fun, games, discussion groups, and all sorts of fan activities;

· Quizzes and ice-breaking events;

· Screenings of archive TV series, as well as some premieres;

· Quality merchandise dealers;

· A 40 page Festival brochure, delegate pack and souvenir badge;

· Autographs (including free ones on the event brochure and possibly on personal items, depending on the guest). Photos will also be available for signing for a nominal charge. (Please note that Autographs are subject to availability and are not guaranteed for every attendee. Attendees are allowed to join the line to get their autographs in registration number order, unless they have bought the Goldmember package - limited to 50 only - for an additional cost).

Because at the time of booking we cannot guarantee on which day any one guest will be at the event, if they are not appearing for the whole weekend, or on stage for their interview, to avoid disappointment we only sell a full weekend registration, the price of which is GBP 99.00 for the first 500 registrations, after which the price increases to GBP 125.00 (lower child rates are available). The Goldmember Package, which also includes seating in the front three rows, and a limited edition Gold Brochure, is an additional GBP 50.00 per person.

Costs for accommodation and food are not included, but has been negotiated at a very reasonable three night package rate.

IS CULT TV EASY TO FIND?

The Festival is being held at the Renaissance Solihull Hotel, Birmingham, UK. This is around 5 miles by road from the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham International Airport and the Birmingham International Rail Station that serves both of these venues. That station is on the rail line from London’s Kings Cross Station. It is possible to take the short taxi ride to the hotel from Birmingham International. A second railway line serves Solihull itself on the line between London Marylebone Station and Birmingham New Street; the hotel is just half a mile from Solihull station.

HOW DO I BOOK?

You can book online, or download and print off a booking form, at: http://www.cult.tv/index.php?cm_id=610&cm_type=article

If you book online by debit/credit card there is a one-off fee of GBP 3.00 per booking (not per person). Cult TV will arrange your on-site accommodation for you – just tell us what you require.

Should you have any questions you can e-mail the organisers at festival@cult.tv.

Cult TV also has an online discussion forum at www.culttv.info, so if you have any questions or wish to join in with the current discussion topics please register there and ask away!

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Henry Corden, the man who provided the voice of Fred Flintstone for more than two decades, has died at age 85.

Corden's agent says the actor died last night at A-M-I Encino Hospital with his wife by his side.

After making a few movies in the 1940s and 1950s, Corden moved into voice acting in the 1960s. He had bit parts in cartoons such as "Jonny Quest," "Josey and the Pussycats" and "The New Tom & Jerry Show."

He took over as the lovable loudmouth Fred Flintstone when original voice Allen Reed died in 1977.

Corden, who lived in Encino, had been working until about three months ago.

On Friday, WCBS-FM in New York City made a switch in music format at 5 p.m. ET, kicking out the oldies format to replace it with a random music format which is sweeping the country called "Jack". It's very likely that the Micky Dolenz Radio Show on Friday, his 100th anniversary show, will be the last.

Another famous DJ, David Cassidy, who was heading the Chicago oldies channel will likely also be affected by this, as his channel has shifted to "Jack" as well.

Infinity Flips Oldies To Jack In New York, Chicago
June 03, 2005

Jack has woken up in the city that never sleeps. It's also blowing across the airwaves in the Windy City. That's right, Jack has been launched in New York and Chicago.

At 5 p.m. eastern, Infinity Broadcasting took oldies WCBS-FM in New York and oldies WJMK-FM in Chicago to the format that's sweeping the nation. In New York, the flip was kicked off with "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys.

"New York deserves a radio station that is equally as eclectic as its listener's personalities and attitudes," said Chad Brown, Vice President and General Manager, WCBS-FM.

"JACK FM promises to be unlike anything currently heard in the market. THUNDER BAY PRESS CELEBRATES THE
40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MONKEES WITH NEW BOOK

THE MONKEES: THE DAY-BY DAY STORY OF THE 60s TV POP SENSATION

San Diego, CAJust in time for the 40th anniversary of the formation of the popular 60s sensation The Monkees, Thunder Bay Press proudly announces the publication of The Monkees: The day-by-day story of the 60s TV pop sensation (July 2005) by the acknowledged expert on the band, Andrew Sandoval.

Revealing a remarkably rich and detailed story, The Monkees takes the reader day-by-day through the band’s short but explosive career, bringing to life recording sessions, concert performances, filming commitments, and other public appearances, including encounters with The Beatles, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and other key figures of the decade.

The book draws upon exclusive interviews with each member of the group and boasts a wealth of photographs, many previously unpublished. Readers will follow the exciting years from 1965 to 1970 and learn the story of one of the most successful pop bands of the 1960s, whose fame began with the groundbreaking NBC television show, which in turn led to a remarkable four consecutive Number 1 albums and six Top 10 singles – including ‘Last Train To Clarksville’, ‘I’m A Believer’, ‘A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You’, and ‘Daydream Believer’. Their celebrity then reached a whole new audience in the 1980s when MTV began re-airing the TV show. The Monkees continue to attract a cult following today and boast impressive sales for recent reissues.

Andrew Sandoval is a music historian, consultant for Rhino Records and Monkees insider who has worked with the Beach Boys, Everly Brothers, the Band, Elvis Costello, The Kinks and more. For the last 15 years, Sandoval has supervised nearly every release by The Monkees. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

The current issue of Goldmine announces an upcoming Monkees article --

"Coming to Goldmine

The Monkees

The story of the Monkees is one of the most extraordinary in rock
history. Put together in the 1960s to cash in on the success of the
Beatles, they appeared in a genuinely funny TV show that took its zany
cue from the Beatle's film "A Hard Day's Night". Simultaneously, they
issued records boasting the top session players and songwriters of the
day. however, the band members tired of being puppets and instigated a
palace revolution that saw them calling the shots. Goldmine talks
exclusively to Monkes singer Micky Dolenz about those heady days when
the world went ape for the Monkees.

Here we go again...

"I will send you to the Russian front!"

That was the threat made by General Burkhalter to Colonel Klink on
many episodes of Hogan's Heroes.

Hollywood character actor Leon Askin, whose decades-long career
included portraying Burkhalter in the 1960s sitcom, died Friday at a
hospital in his native Vienna. He was 97. The cause of his death was
not disclosed.

Like Werner Klemperer, who played Klink, and John Banner, who
appeared as Sergeant Schultz, Askin was a Jewish refugee from the
Nazis.

Askin appeared in over 50 films, as well as in theater and TV. He
supplied various voices for two 1982 TV series: Hanna-Barbera's
Scooby and Scrappy-Doo and Ruby-Spears Productions' Puppy's New
Adventures.

The son of a salesman, he was born Leo Aschkenasy on September 18,
1907, which coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish
calendar. When he was nine years old, he recited a 17-stanza eulogy
for Emperor Francis Joseph in front of the city hall of Vienna's
ninth district.

Askin was the student of dramatists Max Reinhardt and Louise Dumont.
In the 1930s, Askin was a cabaret performer and directed the
political cabaret ABC, discovering Jura Soyfer.

In order to escape Nazi persecution, he fled first to France, then
to the United States. He met Erwin Piscator, the founder of the
school of Epic Realism, in 1938, and worked with him for the next
three decades. During the Second World War, he served in the U.S.
Army.

During the Second World War, Askin's parents (including his blind
mother) were taken to the ghetto/concentration camp of
Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, which was run by the SS. They were
later murdered at the concentration camp in Lublin, Poland.

Often portraying the "funny villain," Askin performed alongside such
luminaries as James Cagney, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Doris
Day and Peter Ustinov. "Here comes my professional!", director Billy
Wilder exclaimed on the set of his 1961 movie One, Two, Three, in
which Askin portrayed Peripetchikoff.

Live-action work for Disney included a guest appearance as Anton
Rubinstein in "The Peter Tschaikovsky Story," a 1959 episode of
Disneyland, and the role of Dr. Gottlieb in the 1973 feature film
The World's Greatest Athlete (1973).

In the 1952 Bing Crosby-Bob Hope comedy Road to Bali, Askin made an
early film appearance as Ramayana. Among the other movies where he
was a character actor -- comedic or dramatic -- were The Robe (1953,
as Abidor), director Fritz Lang's Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse
(1962, as Flocke), What Did You Do In The War, Daddy? (1966, as Col.
Kastorp), Hammersmith Is Out (1972, as Dr. Krodt) and Airplane II:
The Sequel (1982, as the Moscow anchorman).

Besides Hogan's Heroes, he was a regular on 1956's The Charles
Farrell Show (as Pierre the Chef). Guest appearances included the
1950s series Adventures Of Superman, in which he appeared as Joseph
Ferdinand and Prime Minister Vallen. He was Peter Minuit and Von
Reinbein in two episodes of the mid-1960s comedy My Favorite
Martian, and Marvin Elom and Machina in two episodes of the spy
series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

He impersonated both Karl Marx and Martin Luther in various episodes
of PBS's Meeting Of Minds.

His stage performances included Faust and Shylock on Broadway, which
he also directed, and Othello in Hamburg.

Unlike many expatriates, Askin returned to Austria in 1994, where he
continued his film, TV and stage career, receiving several honors.
Earlier, during the postwar years, he had appeared in numerous
Austrian and West German movies and TV productions.

His autobiography, Quietude And Quest (written with C. Melvin
Davidson), was published by Ariadne Press in 1989.

To Monkee fans, Askin is remembered for his role as Nikolai,
Druvanian National Ballet coach/master spy, from Season-2 Monkees
episode "The Card-Carrying Red Shoes."

Once yet again, to absent friends...

I just wanted to let everyone know that the current issue of Goldmine magazine, dated July 22, has The Monkees as their cover story. Micky is featured on the cover and there is an article about the Monkees with interview quotes from Micky throughout. The magazine also contains reviews of the new Andrew Sandoval book and the new Michael Nesmith biography, along with an extensive US discography (with values.)

For those not familiar with the publication, Goldmine is an oversized newspaper publication, and is available at many larger CD and book stores.

ed: It also includes a great review of the new Michael Nesmith biography!

Aida's Dolenz to Be Featured in "Flights of Fancy" Exhibit

By Andrew Gans
24 Aug 2005

Micky Dolenz

The artwork of Micky Dolenz, who played Zoser in the final cast of Broadway's Aida, will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at the Long Island Museum of Science and Technology.

Entitled "Flights of Fancy," the exhibition will feature the works of Dolenz as well as Muhammad Ali, Ultra Violet, Blair Underwood and Candice Bergen. Baird Jones will be the curator of the exhibit, which runs Aug. 27-Sept. 18.

Micky Dolenz was one of the stars of the sixties TV show "The Monkees," about a rock-and-roll band. The group sold over 65 million records, and their albums included "The Monkees," "More of the Monkees," "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd." Dolenz also starred in the West End musical The Point and later became a producer-director for the BBC and London Weekend Television. In 1996 the Monkees reunited for a 30 year summer tour around the U.S., and Dolenz also directed the hit TV show "Boy Meets World." His other theatre credits include Grease, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Tom Sawyer.

The Long Island Museum of Science and Technology is located in Garden City, NY at 1 Davis Avenue on the second floor. Call (516) 572-4058 for more information.

Andrew Sandoval's new book, which I'm enjoying, is highlighted in two

The August 2005 ("US Sixties") issue of "Record Collector" has an
excerpt. There's also an article on Bobby Goldsboro. I kid you not.

Fiddler virtuoso Clements dead at 77

Tuesday, August 16, 2005; Posted: 3:10 p.m. EDT (19:10 GMT)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Vassar Clements, a fiddle virtuoso and A-list studio musician who played with Paul McCartney and an array of others, died at his home Tuesday after a battle with lung cancer, his daughter said.

Clements, 77, was hospitalized for 18 days earlier this year, receiving chemotherapy and other treatment.

"He had no quality of life since he'd been diagnosed," said daughter Midge Cranor, who added that the cancer had spread to his liver and brain.

Clements' last performance was February 4 in Jamestown, New York, Cranor said.

His work bridged a variety of styles, including country, jazz, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll and classical.

"When the rhythm is good, I can play it," he told The Associated Press in a 1988 interview .

During his career, he recorded on more than 2,000 albums, joining artists as varied as McCartney, Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Grateful Dead, Bruce Hornsby, Hank Williams Jr., the Byrds, Woody Herman and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Clements, a Kinard, South Carolina, native who grew up in Kissimmee, Florida, also recorded more than two dozen albums of his own.

The 2005 Grammy for best country instrumental performance went to "Earl's Breakdown," by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band featuring Clements, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs and Jerry Douglas.

He even once recorded with the Monkees -- by happenstance. He was working on a recording session when someone asked him if he wanted to stay and play on another one.

"I didn't know until later it was the Monkees," he said.

Clements, who appeared in Robert Altman's 1975 film "Nashville," taught himself to play at age 7 and had no formal training. The first song he learned was "There's an Old Spinning Wheel in the Parlor."

"It was God's gift, something born in me," he said about his talent. "I was too dumb to learn it any other way. I listened to the (Grand Ole) Opry some. I'd pick it up one note at a time. I was young, with plenty of time and I didn't give up. You'd come home from school, do your lessons and that's it. No other distractions.

"I don't read music. I play what I hear."

He was employed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a year in the mid-1960s, working on plumbing. At various times, he also worked in a Georgia paper mill, was a switchman for Atlantic Coast Railroad, sold insurance and had a potato chip franchise.

But music was always part of his life.

"I'd always play. Square dances, anything," he said.

Hi- As always, THANK YOU for the fabulous updates!

This article mentioning The Monkees appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune this weekend, I thought members might enjoy this humorous look at how the number one song at the time you were born affects your life.

Your songs may tell all about who you are
Bill Hutchens, Tacoma News Tribune

TACOMA, Wash. -- There's a new pickup line brewing for the new millennium:

"Hey, baby, what's your song?"

Ian Van Tuyl, author of the book "Popstrology" and father of what he calls "the art and science of reading the pop stars," thinks there's a universe of meaning behind three decades of hit songs.

"Popstrology" is a painstakingly organized handbook for using pop music charts (or, more specifically, No. 1 songs) to discover how those songs might have influenced you in your formative years -- and might still be influencing you today.

Van Tuyl's music commentary could help "reveal your personality traits, guide your relationships and discover your true destiny," according to the "Popstrology" jacket.

"For me, discovering the fact that I was born when the Monkees were No. 1 was the epiphany that led to 'Popstrology,' " Van Tuyl said in a phone interview.

"I never really found the right belief system I could get behind. Religion never really stuck with me," he said. But after that discovery, "things started falling into place."

He drew an equation in his mind. He had a lifelong yearning to be taken seriously and a failure to do, he said. That seemed a lot like the plight of the Monkees, a popular 1960s band whose members, in the shadow of the Beatles, often didn't play their own instruments.

"I thought maybe the pop stars have some power beyond just making you want to dance or [have sex] or cry," Van Tuyl said.

'I'm a Believer'

A longtime music collector (it all started with a flimsy Jackson 5 promo record he pulled out of a box of Honeycombs cereal), Van Tuyl set out to chart the popstrological universe and its many constellations of interrelated songs, artists and themes.

He now realizes he is a Double Monkee, born Jan. 24, 1967, under the No. 1 song "I'm a Believer" in what he calls "The Year of the Monkees" in his book.

The Monkees, by the way, are part of the constellation "Artificial Ingredients," a spot shared with groups such as Milli Vanilli, the Archies and the Partridge Family.

Van Tuyl uses 33 and a third years of rock history to illustrate the music "coming in with a bang," by way of Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" in April 1956, and "going out with a whimper" with Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting for You" in August 1989. And then there's the fact that 33 and a third just happens to be the play speed, in revolutions per minute, of a standard 12-inch record.

Popstrological readings are simpler than, say, tarot or numerology. Van Tuyl's pages -- nearly 400 of them -- swiftly guide newcomers from their birth year to their birth song and then to what might or might not be revelatory commentary. From there, head to Van Tuyl's constellation index to find associated influences.

Don't get too hung up on a song name or an artist's reputation. Discovering meaning behind a birth song might require readers to focus on Van Tuyl's descriptions of the cultural climate during a song's chart-topping days.

Of course, if something doesn't quite fit, you have to realize that you might be in opposition to your birth song, Van Tuyl said.

His wife, for instance, is a sociologist who has studied "hard-core urban problems. She's an "Oppositional Monkee," he said.

Some music buffs take "Popstrology" in different doses.

Martin Krussel, owner of Rocket Records on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma, flipped through the pages of "Popstrology" last week, looking for any hint of deeper meaning to the fact that the Beatles' song "Yesterday" was No. 1 on his birthday, Oct. 6, 1965.

He said he wasn't a Beatles fan growing up. But "Popstrology" isn't necessarily about whether or not you like your birth song.

Van Tuyl ends his Beatles entry with:

"And while a passionate commitment to work may take you far, child of the Beatles, take care to tame your go-it-alone instincts, for the greatness of what you achieve in groups may outweigh the personal fulfillment you derive from what you do on your own."

Might Van Tuyl's words apply to Krussel, a lone-wolf record-store owner?

"It's like Ace Frehley used to tell Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley [of Kiss] when they were getting all into the marketing," Krussel said: " 'Hey, guys. It's just rock 'n' roll. Don't take it too seriously.' "

An A-Ha moment

Then, in a twist some might call cosmic, Krussel happened to notice among the other "B" listings, the Beach Boys song "I Get Around" -- and one of its more infamous children.

"Whoa. Courtney Love is 'I Get Around'?" Krussel said. "That makes sense. Some of this really fits."

Talking about putting together his book, Van Tuyl said that same connection was "one of those 'Aha! moments' " for him.

Not A-Ha, the '80s synth-pop group. Aha, as in "Aha! I'm really onto something."

Other "Aha!" moments:

Kurt Cobain's birth song, "Kind of a Drag," by the Buckinghams.

Jennifer Lopez's birth song, "Close to You," by the Carpenters. (It speaks to being adored like a goddess, Van Tuyl said.)

Johnny Knoxville's song, "One Bad Apple," by the Osmonds.

Britney Spears' birth song, "Physical," by Olivia Newton-John.

Spears' song is interesting, Van Tuyl said, because for Newton-John it marked a move from innocent Aussie to rolling around on the floor half naked -- on TV in a newfangled music video.

It's a transition from sweet to sensual that exemplifies Spears. The Bush twins also are Olivia Newton-Johns, according to "Popstrology."

But "Popstrology" isn't just about how the stars affect other stars. It's for the common man.

At least one common man hates it.

"It's just a colossal waste of energy and time," said Charlie Rice, owner of the Drastic Plastic record store in Tacoma. He didn't even want to look up his birth song. "As if astrology wasn't bad enough."

But as skeptical as Rice is about the concept of "Popstrology," he's not completely turned off by the 33-and-a-third-year rock 'n' roll window.

Learning that Van Tuyl's cutoff was Richard Marx's August 1989 hit "Right Here Waiting for You," Rice said "So rock 'n' roll died in 1989? He may have something there."

Back in Manhattan, Van Tuyl is hesitant to widen the window. But he's given thought to popstrological readings for his 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. His daughter's birth song is "Independent Women" by Destiny's Child.

"I see that in my daughter," he said. And his son, "often wearing Band-Aids and running around shirtless," is an obvious Nelly child.

"I don't claim to have all the answers," Van Tuyl said. "I just ask that you go into this with an open mind."

Hi,

I had the chance to see Micky Dolenz perform at the Santa Cruz Beach
Boardwalk last night, Aug 12. He did 2 shows, each about 1 hour. He looked
good and sounded great. The shows were well attended and fun. Admission to
the Boardwalk is always free, and this concert (one of the Pepsi Friday
Night Concert Series) was also free.

The stage was set-up on the beach, facing the boardwalk, with the bay behind
the stage. Looking out from the stage, the band could see the rides and
attractions, each show Micky made a comment about the beach, the water, and
the rides that would make me vomit!

He sang the songs everyone wanted, and expected, to hear including Last
Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Steppin’ Stone and I'm a
Believer (including mentioning to any kids in the audience who might
recognize the song that he sang it before Shrek did.) He also sang The
Girl I Knew Somewhere, Daydream Believer, A Little Bit Me/A Little Bit
You, Too Much Monkey Business, and Since I Fell for You each show. The
two shows varied some. During the second show they played the Beatles' Good
Morning after he talked about attending a Beatles' recording session and
hearing the recording that they were working on.

Micky’s sister Coco was on stage with him also; she’s from nearby San Jose.
She performed Different Drum and Runaway besides singing Boogie-Woogie
Bugle Boy with Micky.

A lot of his stories, lines and jokes were the ones he used when he was on
tour with Davy and Peter in 2000/2001 but he knew it, especially by the 2nd
show when he asked if people would laugh again even if they saw the first
show.

I was kindof surprised that he made no mention during the shows about
performing in Aida (traveling show or Broadway) or about doing the radio
show. Really no mention of any recent things. Maybe that’s because the shows
were short and things needed to keep going without a lot of talk inbetween.
And he was there to perform and entertain for a fun Friday night on the
beach.

Micky did have CDs (including his newest Live CD) and photos on sale
between the shows. There was a CD of Coco’s also. Micky autographed items
after the 2nd show. Altogether it was a great evening!

            All Wood and Stones

Singer/guitarist/composers John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley stripped down Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby?, Under My Thumb and nine other Rolling Stones tunes into acoustic skeletons, confounding logic by rendering a subdued version of Let's Spend the Night Together with former Monkee Peter Tork on guitar into a stirring affair. Batdorf and Stanley have turned the rock grooves inside out, adopted stylish arrangements and made no attempt to ape the originals, unveiling the elegance of the melodies and allowing radically new interpretations of songs long tattooed in boomer DNA. Grammy Award wining artist Michael Nesmith is an accomplished songwriter, musician, actor, home video pioneer, film producer and scriptwriter, novelist, businessman and philanthropist. His phenomenal success in the television show The Monkees was just the beginning of his prolific and innovative music and entertainment career, one that continues to shake our pop landscape. Nesmith has recorded a dozen or so reputable folk and country-rock records as a solo artist, masterminded the cult film staple Repo Man, won the first-ever Video Grammy, and written a fantastical novel. Oh yeah, somewhere in the middle of all of this he had the foresight to conceive MTV. This Spring, 2006, Michael Nesmith’s releases his latest album Rays; a calypso-like, cinematic journey of sound with elements of swing-jazz and instrumental funk unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Once again, Nesmith pioneers the movement bringing deeper dimensions to our current musical fields.

"For a time I thought Rays had come together differently than any other project I had worked on, until it dawned on me all the various works I had been involved in had happened the same way and doing Rays was simply the first time I had seen it. Rays was my own personal Copernican Shift. For years Rays laid around in bits and pieces, and there were long periods when I would put them all away, like disparate parts of disparate building blocks. As if one was a recipe, another was a blueprint, another was a map. I couldn’t see how they fit together. I kept going, as much for not having anything else to do as for the curiosity of how it would all turn out, but I did keep going, and I’m glad I did. It was when I was putting on the horn parts, dreaming of Memphis and Stax Volt, that it all came together. It was as if I had come into the garage one evening, and was looking at the detritus of a failed effort laying all over the floor, when suddenly there was this array, a kind of order to it that I had never imagined. That was exciting. It felt new, and gave me the inspiration I needed to finish. This after four years of wandering in darkness --- which actually happened to be one of the lines from Rays. I had always imagined 'emergence' as the gradual appearing of something that already exists but was just unseen. Rays was the first time I ever actually saw that happen. And now that I’ve seen it I am aware that all the past works have happened the same way." - Michael Nesmith

Robert Michael Nesmith was born December 30, 1942 in Houston, Texas. He moved from his native Texas to California; intent on breaking into show business. He began to write songs and perform them at live venues around Los Angeles. Spotting an ad calling for four musicians to act in a TV series, he landed a leading role in The Monkees. that quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, and catapulted the young Nesmith to stardom. While in The Monkees, Nesmith continued to write and sing his own songs. He received critical and commercial acclaim for his songs Some of Shelly’s Blues and Different Drum, a 1967 US Top 20 hit for Linda Ronstadt. His job in the television show also gave him the opportunity to write and produce songs for the show. But the country-tinged music he did for the show was pretty experimental for television. Nesmith left The Monkees in 1969 to form The First National Band. Pioneer of the genre later to be dubbed country rock, he released a series of albums for RCA. Magnetic South, the 1970 debut LP included the Top 30 single Joanne, followed by Loose Salute and 1971’s Nevada Fighter. When The First National Band dissolved that same year, Nesmith formed The Second National Band Although he released only one album, 1972’s Tantamount To Treason Volume One, he continued to refine the country/rock sound that was to influence a new breed of artists such as Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Poco, The Flying Burrito Bros. and New Riders of The Purple Sage. Other Michael Nesmith albums were quick to follow: And The Hits Just Keep On Comin’, and Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash all distributed by RCA.

Nesmith left RCA to launch his own communications company, Pacific Arts Corporation. The Prison, an ambitious multi-media book/record combination, was the corporation’s first release in 1975. This was followed in 1976 by the LP From A Radio Engine To A Photon Wing and featured the hit single Rio. He created a video for Rio which is considered by many to be the first music video, because it developed a new film language, marrying music to images. (The Rio video is in the permanent collection at MOMA.) With the album Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma, Nesmith included the song Cruisin and he made a video for it as well. Cruisin possessed a recitative style that nobody besides maybe Bob Dylan was doing at the time. Nesmith included both Rio and Cruisin in an hour long landmark video called Elephant Parts, a kind of music and comedy combination come to life in a single, long form format. NARAS loved it but didn’t have a Grammy category for it, so they created a Best Video category for it that year and Elephant Parts won the first Grammy for Best Video.

Nesmith went on tour performing behind the success of the single Rio. While appearing in Australia, he noted an interest in Top 40 television shows that played video clips of performing artists. Back in the states, Nesmith put together a half-hour prototype Top 40 show called Popclips. He sold it to Warner Brothers/Amex and Nesmith produced the first shows and so became the creator of the idea for what eventually became MTV.

Between Elephant Parts and Television Parts, Nesmith co-wrote, produced and scored the film Timerider and was the producer of Repoman, Tapeheads, and Square Dance. In 1989, Michael Nesmith and The Monkees were presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Nesmith returned to his music and assembled a compilation of unreleased tracks and selected cuts from his later LP’s entitled The Newer Stuff. In late 1991, Rhino Records released another CD collection from his earlier LP’s entitled, fittingly, The Older Stuff: The Best of Michael Nesmith (1970-73). In September of 1992, Michael Nesmith launched his independent record label, Pacific Arts Audio, with the release of his long awaited ...tropical campfires... which Nesmith fans consider to be one of his best works.

In addition to releasing his own work, Nesmith signed The Hellecasters and released two albums by them, Return Of The Hellecasters and Escape from Hollywood. In just under a years time, The Hellecasters won three awards for 1993; "Best Overall Guitar LP" & "Best Country LP" in the prestigious Guitar Player Magazine’s readers poll, and "Top 2 Roots LP" in Guitar World Magazine.

The Garden was released in September of 1994. This outstanding multi-media package was nominated for a Grammy Award in the new age category. It is the second part of a work Nesmith started in 1974 entitled The Prison. Like The Prison, The Garden is a book and music designed to be experienced simultaneously.

Since 1990, Nesmith has hosted the Council on Ideas, a gathering of intellectuals from different fields who are asked to brainstorm solutions to world problems. From the early 90’s through 2004 he served as a member of the board of trustees of the American Film institute, and was a nominating member of the AFI Awards. He is currently President and chairman of the board of trustees of the Gihon Foundation. His first novel The Long Sandy Hair Of Neftoon Zamora was released by St Martins Press in December of 1998. They've also played a bunch of tracks the oldies stations haven't
played to death. What a treat!

Former MONKEES star DAVY JONES wants to die anonymously at sea after tossing
himself over the railings of a cruise ship.
The DAYDREAM BELIEVER singer, who turns 60 next month (DEC05), dreams of a
peaceful passing and doesn't want any fuss made about his death.
He explains, "I want to retire unknown and anonymous and just fade away. I
want to be on a cruise ship or something, and when I know I'm about to die,
I'll be overboard before anybody knows and I'll be eaten by a whale.
"My body will be washed up on some beach somewhere and when my kids go to
the ocean I want them to know I'm there. That would be kind of a romantic
legacy."

Sorry, Monkeemavens; I must drop another B-52 on ya...

Hamilton Camp, 10/30/1934 - 10/02/2005

Hamilton Camp died suddenly on October 2, 2005. He is survived by 6
children and 13 grandchildren.

Hamilton Camp was an actor, a singer, and a songwriter. His acting
career started at age 12 in 1946; his music career began in 1960,
when he and Bob Gibson made their mark on folk music.

In the spring of 2004, he appeared as Sir Andrew Aguecheek in
Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at A Noise Within in Los Angeles. F.
Kathleen Foley, writing for the LA Times, said this of his
performance:

"Hamilton Camp, who plays the buffoonish courtier, Sir Andrew
Aguecheek, is bar none the funniest character in the show. A master
of the discreet double take, Camp is outrageously silly but never
cheap, always keeping his wackiness well within the confines of
Taborl's realistic construct." - LA Times, March 26, 2004

In July of that year, Hamilton appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream
at the Hollywood Bowl, and reprised his role as Snug The Joiner in
the production at A Noise Within in Los Angeles during the Fall.
During the summers of 2004 and 2005 he coached theater games in Door
County, Wisconsin.

In January, 2005, he traveled to the Washington, DC area for
appearances at the World Folk Music Association annual benefit
concerts (January 14 & 15), and a concert at Jammin' Java on the
16th. Read my informal report on the weekend here.

He finished work on the movie Hard Four (watch the trailer) in the
spring of 2005, and just completed a new original album scheduled
for release later this year.

With consummate skill, wit and and abundance of talent, he bridged
these two disciplines throughout his life, and leaves a wonderful
legacy of music and films.

(Courtesy of http://hamiltoncamp.com/)

We Monkeemavens are well aware of Mr. Camp's said legacy, as he is
remembered by us as Philo in Episode No. 31 of The Monkees TV
series, "The Monkees At The Movies" (prod. #4727, aired on NBC April
17, 1967).

To absent friends....

Micky's new children's book "Gakky Two-Feet" will be released May 18,
2005. There's a link to pre-order the book at www.hooloovoo.com/dolenz/
He's also got a fantastic new headshot which I think is one of his best in
recent years. And a few new tour dates as well.

Also the EP on Amazon.uk called "Plastic Surgery" isn't something of his.
He's never heard of it and hasn't recorded or released anything in long
time.

Fans of New Forms Will Find Sanctuary in
Vox Lumiere: Hunchback at Philly's Prince
Music Theater
By Kenneth Jones
05 Sep 2005

"Vox Lumiere: The Hunchback of Notre Dame", a unique
multi-media theatre experience by the group whose
name translates as "Voice of Light," opens the Prince
Music Theater's 2005-06 season in Philadelphia Sept. 8-17.

This is the East Coast premiere of the group's new
multi-media production, inspired by the silent Lon
Chaney motion picture version of the Victor Hugo
classic.

"Set against the backdrop of the great silent film
that made Lon Chaney a star, Vox Lumiere's production
re-imagines the story with a new score and a wholly
modern company of 16 singers, dancers and musicians,"
according to production notes. "The multi-level staging
and evocative pop-rock score serve to deepen the
characters and intensify the film's narrative impact."

Vox Lumiere kicks off the "Prince's New Visions" series,
and is presented as part of the Philadelphia Fringe
Festival. Critics have compared the troupe to Stomp
and Blue Man Group.

"In Vox Lumiere: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Wallace
Worsely's 1923 classic silent film unfolds on three
screens, while below, the singers and a band perform
a new rock opera created to complement and heighten
the drama of the film," according to the creators.

Music and lyrics are by Academy Award-nominated composer,
songwriter and conductor Kevin Saunders Hayes ("Mighty
Times - The Legacy of Rosa Parks") with direction by
Gabriel Previtera.

The cast includes guitarist, songwriter and producer
Christian Nesmith (son of the Monkees' Michael Nesmith),
Melissa Fahn (original Broadway cast of Wicked), Suzi
Carr George (lead roles in the original L.A. companies
of Beauty and the Beast and Cats) and Kyle Lowder ("Days
of Our Lives").

I just saw Davy at the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs. (6:30 show)
He sounded great, did his charming/corny jokes on stage, excellent time, but I have a question.
I've seen the Monkees 5 times since 86 or 87... whenever it was when Monkeesmania came back.... Anyway, I've seen plenty of other concerts in my day, and was wondering, does Davy normally only do a one hour set?
Not only that but he opened and closed with the same song. (I'm a Believer)
Everything else was great, as I said... I've even seen him with Bobby Sherman and Peter Noone a few years ago, and I'm sure he did an hour then.. but that's understandable when there are two other acts.
Davy did do a cover of Freddy Fender's, Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and that was fun to hear.
I was surprised not to hear I Wanna Be Free, and would have loved to hear Cuddly Toy, and I don't know if he does "Manchester Boy" but I have to admit, that one pulls at my heartstrings.
Ok, that's all... not a complaint, just expected and hour and a half.
Is an hour typical for Jonesy?
Joe

In our recently published online poll of our readers' ALL-TIME TOP 20 PSYCHEDELIC SONGS, THE MONKEES were nominated FIVE times!!! Although none of their tracks made the final countdown, votes were cast for ZILCH, FOR PETE'S SAKE, WORDS, PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY and DAILY NIGHTLY. DAILY NIGHTLY WAS featured as a bonus track during the month-long series. (I'm sure you all recall the ultra-cool black and white MONKEES' video for DAILY NIGHTLY that ended a couple of episodes of the series ... MICKY DOLENZ, seated at one of the very first Moog Synthesizers ever made, looks at the camera as the very last note resonates and says, "Psychedelic!")

In related MONKEES news, FORGOTTEN HITS will be running an exclusive interview with RON DANTE next month in which he discusses auditioning for THE MONKEES and working with DON KIRSHNER on THE ARCHIES project. Many of your readers contacted us a year ago when we ran our lengthy TOMMY BOYCE AND BOBBY HART series ... and have remained loyal FORGOTTEN HITS readers. Here's another chance for some of you faithful '60's music fans to see what we're all about. If you're interested in receiving a copy of the RON DANTE series, please contact: The60sShop@aol.com no later than January 23, 2006!!!

The UK CD EP recently advertised as Micky Dolenz "Plastic Surgery" is in fact
called "Plastic Symphony" and features the four tracks issued by the
Challenge label in 1967. Of the four selections, the two non-Dolenz instrumental
tracks sound like they are dubbed from discs, but "Huff Puff" and "Don't Do It"
appear in very good fidelity - this marks their first official appearance on CD.
The liner notes are lame (come on, "Mickey," if you can't spell his name right
on his own CD...), but it's cheaper than buying the Challenge originals on
vinyl.

I'm sad to report that world reknowned banjo player, Bobby Thompson, who is
best known by Monkees fans for his work on Nez' infamous Monkees Nashville
Sessions, (and perhaps also for his later membership in the bands Area Code
615 and Barefoot Jerry,) passed away this last May.

You can find out more about Bobby's incredible career on his website:

This was a snipped in this morning's Detroit News:

Expected:
A documentary focusing on the life and career of late singer-songwriter
Harry Nilsson sometime next year, Reuters reports. "Who is Harry Nilsson
(And Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him?)" will include appearances by
Yoko Ono, Randy Newman, Micky Dolenz, Eric Idle, the Smothers Brothers,
Brian Wilson and Robin Williams. There also will be excerpts from
Nilsson's recently discovered oral autobiography. Nilsson is probably
best-known for "Everybody's Talkin'," the song from "Midnight Cowboy."

The New Year will find (Andrew)Sandoval revisiting the Monkees
catalogue for a series of double-disc mono/stereo releases; he'll also
helm a second seven-disc Everly Brothers box. Palao, meanwhile, is
currently digging through an archive of garage-rock recorded by Norman
Petty in the same Clovis, New Mexico, studio where Buddy Holly helped
invent rock 'n' roll. Now it's time to help document and reinvent it.

Double disc sets! Let's hope they cram a lot of stuff on both discs!
