This week is the 40th anniversary of 'Coronation Street' , England's most famous and
longest-running TV soap opera. It has always been filmed in Manchester, David's home city.
In the Manchester Evening News on Monday December 4th there was a supplement
to commemorate the anniversary. There was a 'Before They Were Famous'
feature, of people who appeared on the show but then found fame elsewhere,
afterwards. There is a picture of a young David Jones, appearing on the show
as Colin Lomax, in 1961. It describes him as "a little Monkee giving Ena
Sharples (his grandmother on the show) the runaround".

Also featured was fellow teen-idol and Mancunian Peter Noone (Herman), who
later appeared on the soap as Stanley Fairclough.

Just wanted to let everyone know: I went to see the Grinch this
weekend, and one of the movie previews featured a cover version of
I'm a Believer!! Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the
movie (sorry! it was a comedy tho). It sounded like a very recent
cover version, pretty groovy, and I'm sure it'll be featured on the
movie's soundtrack!

myplay Celebrity DJ Mix Pays Tribute to John Lennon and the BeatlesPlus the
Music of the Holiday Season

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- As the holidays rapidly
approach, myplay's Celebrity DJ Mix feature will devote itself to John
Lennon and the holidays, featuring a John Lennon tribute mix, a Beatles
tribute with exclusive interviews, and finally, a holiday music mix from
ex-Monkee and TV/film producer Michael Nesmith.

Myplay, inc., the creator of the digital music Locker(TM), introduced the
Celebrity DJ Mix feature, in which recording artists and other entertainment
industry luminaries create streaming mixes of their favorite songs for
myplay customers.  Myplay members can also share Celebrity DJ mixes legally
with their friends via myplay's "E-mail Music" feature, simply by clicking
on an "e-mail this mix" button to e-mail a URL link to a specific DJ mix.
Just like an old-fashioned "mix tape," the "E-mail this mix" button allows
you to create and legally send individual music mixes (playlists of songs)
to friends and family.  The e-mail recipient can then click on the link to
listen to the streaming mix.

Former San Francisco DJ Dave Sholin, who conducted the last interview with
John Lennon before he was murdered, contributed a Lennon tribute mix.
Sholin tells the story in his introduction, offers three excerpts from that
interview (conducted at the Dakota on December 8, 1980), and plays a mix of
Beatles and Lennon music. Sholin was a DJ and program director at KFRC in
San Francisco, and hosted a Top 40 countdown show that was syndicated
nationally for years.

Also featured are interviews by Ben Fong-Torres of myplay with Paul
McCartney and Yoko Ono in the years following Lennon's death.  In his DJ
mix, Fong-Torres plays excerpts from those interviews and adds other
interview soundbites by Lennon and George Harrison.  Fong-Torres also offers
a wide selection of Beatles and Lennon music, including Lennon compositions
performed by such artists as George Clinton and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Turning from the Beatles to the holidays, Michael Nesmith, the ex-Monkee,
songwriter ("Different Drum," "Joanne,"  "Silver Moon") and TV/film producer
("Repo Man," "Elephant Parts"), loves holiday music.  "And I like the corny
stuff," he says.  "I play it around my house starting the day after
Thanksgiving."  His myplay mix ranges from the Carpenters to Keb Mo', from
Willie Nelson and Gene Autry to Darlene Love and Oscar Peterson.

Michael Nesmith

Darlene Love's "White Christmas," Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper," Beach
Boys' "Baby;" Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run;" Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell
Rock;" Manhattan Transfer's "Silent Knight," Oscar Peterson's "Have Yourself
a Merry Little Christmas;" Aaron Neville's "Let It Snow" and Dean Martin's
"Baby It's Cold Outside."

There is a picture and article of interest, in The (London) Times today
(Saturday 9 December, page 22). "Hey, hey we're the Thinkees" is about the
Council on Ideas run by Mike Nesmith, funded by the inheritance from his
Mother's liquid paper fortune.

There is a colour picture of the Monkees on the set of the 'Monkees Race
Again' episode, where they are all drinking tea, and a small pic of Mike
from the band's visit to London in early '97, to promote the upcoming tour.
transcript follows...

"Hey, hey we're the Thinkees" by James Bone, in America.

It must say something profound about our civilisation that the task of
saving humanity falls to a former Monkee. Michael Nesmith, a member of the
mop-topped Sixties pop group sometimes described as the American Beatles,
has grown into an intellectual and philanthropist whose favourite pastime is
to summon leading thinkers to address the big issues facing mankind.
Once best known for his side-burns and knitted cap, Mr Nesmith was regarded
as the 'smart Monkee'. Now 57, he devotes himself to running his own brains
trust known as the Council on Ideas. The venture is funded by the fortune
that his mother, a former Dallas secretary, made by inventing the
now-ubiquitous typing-correction fluid known as Liquid Paper.

"It's an important thing to do because there is a need for the fine thinkers
that we have to spend a little bit of time thinking about humanity and us as
a civilisation" he says. "The way the council is set up, you can have a
clergyman next to a business person next to an artist next to a scientist"
Mr Nesmith got his big break when, as a 22 year old aspiring guitarist in
1965, he was chosen at an audition for a television show modelled after the
Beatles' film, "A Hard Day's Night". As one of the zany Monkees, he sang and
lip-synched his way to television stardom, which continues in reruns to this
day. At the height of their success, the Monkees sold 16 million albums.
When the television show ended after three years in 1968 and the group broke
up, Mr Nesmith went solo for a time, helped to found MTV music video
television, produced such cult films as "Repo Man" and even wrote a novel,
titled "The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora". He is now the vice-chairman
of American Film Institute.

These days, he refuses to talk about his Monkees past and is on difficult
terms with some of his former band-mates after backing out of a 1996 reunion
tour after the initial Births leg. Instead, a Christian Scientist like his
mother, he likes to focus on affairs of the mind.
Every two years for the past decade, he has invited "thought leaders" to
brainstorm at his mother's workshop in New Mexico on the Big Picture.
The first encounter in 1990 collapsed when the assembled intellectuals -
Georgie Anne Geyer , the newspaper columnist,  Lawrence Grossman, the
television executive, and Wendy Wasserstein, the playwright - fell out over
Fidel Castro and could not agree a final statement. This year's
intellectuals comprised Cherif Bassiouni, the Egyptian-born war crimes
investigator; Anna Roosevelt, the American anthropologist and
great-granddaughter of FDR, the US President; Murray Gell-Mann, the Nobel
prize-winning 'quark' theorist; Nikki Giovanni, a poet; and Stanley Karnow,
the Pulitzer prize-winning Vietnam war correspondent (standing in for Carlos
Fuentes, the Mexican novelist).

(transcript ends)

Good to see that after the joke headline, a serious article has been written
in a famous and reputable newspaper, about one of the Monkees. Let's hope
this sort of journalism helps to overcome the prejudices against the
'manufactured' Monkees, and helps to improve their long-term position and
standing in music and TV history.

The reviewer discusses how several members of the group wrote several of the

songs on their final albums and whether or not it is a good idea to write
songs on their albums for the first time. The review is on page 41.

Monkee Business Fanzine Monkees News Update
updated December 22, 2000

While the Monkees continue to plan their solo tour schedules, there is now word that
Micky, Davy, and Peter will reunite to play a short 15-city tour in the spring.  The
reunion tour will be handled by David Fishof, who produced the guys' 1986 reunion
tour.  Fishof recently became Davy Jones' personal manager and wants to steer Davy's
career back toward the stage and the musical theater---he also envisions the Monkees'
tour leading up to a stint on Broadway.  Davy recently told MONKEE BUSINESS
FANZINE (Dec. 2000) that the limited run Broadway show would be called "Monkeemania"
and would star the Monkees---"even 'Beatlemania' didn't have the real Beatles,"
Davy said.  "Monkeemania" would resemble the 1987 tour, with all the comedy
skits and schtick, with guest stars, a different celebrity playing Mr. Babbit every
night, and the audience never knowing who would show up on stage with the guys.
"It could be Peter's friend James Lee Stanley or Micky's sister or my band, all
the familiar faces," Davy says.  In all of these proposed projects, Davy told MBF,
"Mike is always welcome.  He can do anything we can.  He has done everything we've done."

Hi!
It's been a long time since we saw "The Monkees" on
the Screen-Gems Network, but apparently they're back
on after "The Partridge Family"!!  According to
clicktv.com, the first Monkee episode, "One Man Shy",
will be on Friday, January 5th, 2001.  The second
Monkee episode, "The Pilot" aka "Here Come The
Monkees", will be on Friday, January 12th.  I'm
assuming that Screen-Gems will have the show only on
Fridays for January.

For all the new-comers, Screen-Gems Network
(www.screengemsnetwork.com) is a one-hour American
syndicated package shown at different times on
different channels in different areas.  I'm not sure
how it is for others, but on New Year's day it comes
back on in my area.  M-Th SGN will have the
Jeannie/Bewitched block, but on Fridays (assuming it's
throughout January) it will have the Partridge/Monkees
block.  Check your local listings of next week for
indications that one of your channels carries the
Network.

Tonight on Entertainment Tonight, Davy Jones was mentioned as having a
birthday today. (They said he was 54 today, but we know he turned 55). Then the show
previewed next weekend's broadcast (Sat. Jan. 6, CBS, 7-8pm Eastern) as
featuring teenage idols and where they are now. They showed that they will
be interviewing Davy Jones, Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, and others. When
they previewed Davy's portion, he said something like, "The 14 year olds are
now 44 and thanking us for helping them through their youth". They also
showed Davy singing "Daydream Believer" with the Teen Idols. Look for Davy
on Entertainment Tonight next weekend!

Happy New Year,
Carolyn

I'm really bad at summarizing things, so I'll just type up the whole article.  It's short.  :)  The Monkees part is at the bottom.

ADAM'S RIBBED

While some might find Adam Sandler to be Satan incarnate, is it fair to blame him for Time Warner's slide in earnings growth?  In a Dec. 18 press release, the media giant (and EW's parent) projected an earnings dip - in part due to the "disappointing performance" of his Little Nicky.  The bedeviled New Line flick reportedly cost $80 million but hasn't cracked $40 million after five weeks.  Despite Warner Bros. duds like the $70 million Red Planet, which opened the same day and has earned $17 million so far, Nicky was the only movie cited.  (New Line declined to comment.)  Perhaps Sandler will become an all purpose scapegoat for woes like these.
