MICHAEL NESMITH Nez recently completed a bicoastal book tour to promote his new novel, The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora (1998, St. Martin's Press). He's working on his second novel, and he has been trying to drum up interest in getting his script, "Fried Pies", turned into a feature film. Michael Nesmith's long-running legal trouble with PBS was finally concluded in July when his attorneys and PBS's attorneys reached a financial settlement of an undisclosed amount. Since both parties were reportedly pleased with the settlement, it can be assumed that the final figure was substantially less than the $47 million a jury awarded Nez in the same case in February. It talks about Wham setting out to prepare new ground with their new music, and the help received from MTV in doing so. "There had been what amounted to promos in the past. As far back as the 1960's, The Beatles has capered around in a ploughed field to promote "Strawberry Fields forever", while excerpts from a film and TV series had advertised products as diverse as Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and any number of Monkees hits. " Page 73. Kirk & Sue www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~bandsix ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: louise.macneil@excite.com I had posted about an article on the Monkees being in the August 14th issue of Canadian TV Guide; I just got a message from Christie asking me to transcribe and send it to her so I figured I'd transcribe and send it to EVERYONE. It's on page 20, the REWIND section. "31 years ago this week Last train to syndication by Christoper Loudon The year was 1965, Beatle-mania had reached a fevered pitch, and the strategy for ratings-challenged NBC was clear: Try to create a TV series that captured the frenetic appeal of the Fab Four. And so, The Monkees was born, with the network launching a search that fall for four fresh-faced actors to play the mythical rock group. Nearly 500 hopefuls heeded the call; but the roles went to a onetime British jockey (Davy Jones), a former child star (Micky Dolenz) and two musicians (Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith). Throughout the summer of '66, the foursome studied the art of improv, and when The Monkees debuted in September, it caused a sensation. The ersatz group, whose early songs were produced with the aid of an army of studio musicians, sold more than eight million records in eight months, and their zaniness proved so fresh that it bested such popular competitors as Bewitched, The Lucy Show and Hogan's Heroes at the 1966 Emmy Awards. But The Monkees' playfulness proved mercurial. Pitted against Gunsmoke, the sitcom couldn't sustain a sizable audience, and on Aug. 19, 1968, The Monkees officiallyy departed the prime-time circus. FAST FACTS: 1. At the tail-end of the debut season of The Monkees, Mike Nesmith made headlines when he complained at a press conference that, "We're being passed off as something we're not." 2. Nesmith later became independently wealthy when he inherited an enormous fortune from his mother, a former secretary who invented the office product Liquid Paper. 3. In 1987, a heavily hyped talent hunt was staged to cast The New Monkees. The syndicated series lasted just 13 episodes. ******************************************************* And there you go... -Neffie ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Maggie McManus" New Davy Jones date: January 16, 2000 Gulfstream Park Hallandale, FL maggie monkeebiz@prodigy.net ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Amanda Laws Mtv is getting ready for the 1999 music video awards they were showing dance segments from performances through out the past award shows and they showed Micky, Davy, and Peter doing the classic Monkee's walk on the stage, it was only for maybe 10 seconds or less but they showed it! ~Amanda www.amandasdesigns.com The Monkees Alert list is moderated, meaning you cannot post directly to the list yourself. The orphanage has been having trouble placing 12-year-old Eddie Brown (Justin Berfield) into a foster home, so it turns to the Griffin family as a last resort, for it has a history of taking in lost causes. Laura Griffin (Dee Wallace Stone) easily persuades her inventor husband and 14-year-old son that Eddie would make a suitable addition to the family. And it isn't long before Eddie is unpacking his suitcase at the Griffin household. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, billionaire Randolph St. John is taking the big leap toward the white light. Standing over him, rubbing their hands together, is his greedy niece Olivia (Mary Woronov) and his avaricious nephew Bernard (Micky Dolenz), both of whom already are counting the ways to waste the wealth. But the moment the billionaire bites the big one, the family attorney announces that a long-lost grandson has been located, and he, rather than the rapacious relatives, will gain access to the assets. Naturally, the lucky lad turns out to be Eddie, and just as he's settled into his new digs, his covetous cousins come along and drag him back to the family estate, where a convenient accident awaits him. It's up to the Griffins to rescue Eddie. Luckily, Laura still has bouts of invisibility, thanks to a potion that she accidentally imbibed in the original film. The phenomenon occurs only when she becomes excited, and this latest family crisis certainly is cause enough for her to lose control of her emotions and her opacity.
