######################
Arranger/composer/producer Jack Nitzsche, best known for his work with the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Phil Spector and Sonny Bono, died Friday of cardiac arrest, brought on by a recurring bronchial infection, at Queen of Angels Hospital in Hollywood, Calif.; he was sixty-three.

Born Bernard Alfred Nitzsche in Chicago in 1937 and raised on a farm outside of Newaygo, Mich., Nitzsche relocated to California in the mid-Fifties, after reading an ad in Downbeat magazine for the Westlake School of Music, in the hopes of studying there to become a jazz saxophonist. After quitting music school, he landed a job as a music copyist at Specialty Records. There he met Sonny Bono, then the chief of A&R at the record label, who encouraged him in his early attempts at songwriting. Nitzsche co-wrote "Needles and Pins" with Bono in 1962, a hit for both Jackie DeShannon and the Searchers; the song's strummed guitar is considered by many to be the archetype of the folk rock sound.

As Nitzsche's reputation grew, he was recommended to Phil Spector, who had moved his recording operations to Los Angeles in 1962. Nitzsche became Spector's first-choice arranger, and by extension, one of the architects behind Spector's Wall of Sound, working on classic releases by the Crystals, Ike and Tina Turner, the Ronettes and the Righteous Brothers.

After befriending the Rolling Stones in 1964, Nitzsche started leaving his touch on their work as well, playing keyboards and percussion on their early recordings. His collaborations with the Stones include "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Paint It Black."

From there, Nitzsche worked with a succession of musicians, including Tim Buckley, Doris Day, Marianne
Faithfull, the Byrds, the Monkees and Buffalo Springfield. His work with Buffalo Springfield ("Expecting to
Fly") and subsequent friendship with Neil Young led to Young recruiting him as not only a producer but also a
touring member of Crazy Horse, for whom he wrote string arrangements and played piano.

As for his own recording career, Nitzsche scored a minor hit with the instrumental "The Lonely Surfer," which
went to No. 39 on the charts in 1963. He is also noted for his motion picture work, including the scores and
eerie mood pieces of Performance in 1970 and The Exorcist in 1973.

He was nominated for an Oscar in 1975 for his glass harp/musical saw score for One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest, and won an Oscar in 1982 for "Up Where We Belong," the theme from An Officer and a
Gentleman (which he co-wrote with lyricist Will Jennings and ex-wife Buffy Sainte-Marie).

Though Nitzsche had a stellar reputation as an arranger and composer, his private life was a bit more spotty.
He was arrested for pistol-whipping then-girlfriend actress Carrie Snodgress and threatening to kill her and
Young's son in 1979. He was consequently fined and sentenced to three years probation for assault with a
deadly weapon.

Nitzsche is survived by ex-wife Sainte-Marie, first wife Gracia, their forty-year-old son Jack Jr. and his
daughter-in-law Christine. A private funeral service will be held in California on Wednesday, Aug. 30, with a
larger memorial service to be planned at a later date.

From: C. Brian Jasper

Hi Brad. C.Brian Jasper here. The following is a review of the new Johnny J Blair CD "Fire" in which Davy Jones Co-produced as well as sang and played on.

Fire. Johnny J Blair. C-JAM Productions CJAM-7770

By: C. Brian Jasper (Goldmine contributor)

Johnny J Blair is an artist whose work has garnered praise from rock
legends Cliff Richard to Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson. This
album is an offshoot of the Jones-Blair projects (Jones as in Davy
Jones of the Monkees). An ambitious, daring, across-the-boards
collaborative effort, "Fire" takes the listener on a journey via a
cast of diverse characters creating pop music with a conscience.
It's a melting pot of textures and rhythms:
Rock/House/Techno/Gospel/Jazz and American roots music, resulting in
a "pure pop" sound. Blair's influences-both past and present-are not
merely imitated, as so often happens with hybrid sounds, but rather
furthered and embellished.

The set kicks into gear with "Dancin' By The River," a baptismal
anthem laden with chunky guitar chords and backed with a slinky
Latin rhythm. This track, reminiscent of Santana, has CHR appeal and
easily merits air play. The spirit of Sly & and the Family Stone is
omnipresent on "Fire," updated to good effect with a cover of
"Everyday People." The song is transformed into a medley, an
interweaving of Blair's own contributions-including a gentle, sweet
rap from Monette Newsuan, drum loops & cheerleading from Jab'O
Starks (James Brown's Funkmasters), and a visit from Motown
percussion great "Pistol' Allen-all of which makes for a loose,
uncontrived, exciting track. "Fire" is sequenced to run as one
continuous experience, with an Alan Parsons seamlessness. The
instrumental title track, "Fire," preludes "All Things Are Possible"
with a sense of majesty and reflection, with help from Tim Breon
(Neil Sedaka) on acoustic guitar. The influence of the mid 70's
Bowie "Thin White Duke" period gives this hypnotic, upbeat track a
retro yet fresh appeal.

"One Wonderful Smile" follows, in contrast, like a gentle, warm
breeze, yet is hauntingly beautiful, in the vein of John Lennon's
"Bless You". Blair's voice is sensitive and understated, vocally
akin to Julian Lennon with a Keith Richards rasp, and much like that
of Nils Lofgren (another performer of pop music with a conscience).
Blair never oversings, as so many young artists tend to do these
days. Likewise during the infectious hook of "Love, Love Alone."

Monkee fans and completists will recognize the instrumental "A
Little Industrial Nachmusik" as a variation on the Davy Jones song
"Oh What A Night"; in fact, Jones himself plays acoustic guitar on
the track, augmented by grungecore veteran John Bechdel (Prong, Fear
Factory, Killing Joke) on various instruments and treatments, which
sets the stage for "Lighten Up" (a funky little ode to life's
frustrations in the face of a society that demands its fellow man to
"smile" and not get so "real" on them). The track is propelled by a
percussive modern reggae groove, and features a tasteful rap segment from
Adrienne Blanton.

Nine cuts into the CD, it's time to go "Dancin' By The River" again.
This time the fun is provided via members of Neon Cactus, with a
Tex-Mex mix. Behind a thunderous rhythm track featuring noted
drummer Sandy Gennaro (Cyndi Lauper), there is also hit potential
with "Throw the First Stone," which wades into the delicate subject
matter of the holier-than-thou Christian loops and finger pointers
that turn so many people off. Blair tells it like it is-by
speculation, not preachiness. This would make a great song for John
Mellencamp to cover.

The drifting closer "Man Of Sorrows" sways like a late-night Randy
Newman number, a variation on themes from Gershwin to Ellington,
coupled with lyrics from hymn writer Philip Bliss, creating a
uniquely peaceful piece of praise to end the set.

Blair seems to have a genuine awe at his own fate in producing
"Fire," evident in the tack-on answering machine announcements coda
during the last thirty seconds of the CD, in which a message from
pop music legend Davy Jones comes in side-by-side with, "Hi! This is
Sabrina I was just calling to see if Jade could play!" This adds a
human final touch to an album made for all people, and assembled by
God, as Blair selflessly claims in the liner notes.

Hi everyone, there is a 1/2 page 'celebrity classroom' story in the new issue
of the "National Enquirer" about Micky titled "Micky Dolenz:The Monkee Who
Bit Me In School" It's an article submitted by a woman who attended school
with Micky-she says in 6th grade he was always joking around, but very full
of himself because of 'Circus Boy'. One day he began teasing her (she
doesn't remember what it was about) and wouldn't stop, so she told him he
smelled like Bimbo. He then grabbed her forearm and bit her hard. She
screamed but he laughed and ran away. She did graduate from high school with
him and didn't know what happened to him until she saw him on 'The Monkees'.
No comment from Micky-there is a small, recent picture of Micky now, a small
picture of him from 6th grade, a small picture of the woman from 6th grade
and a group picture of the Monkees.

Enjoy,

This is from Michael Nesmith's web store VideoRanch.com:

From: "foreman" <foreman@videoranch.com>

Live at the Palais: We get emails daily asking us to please put Live at the Palais, the Michael Nesmith album, out on CD. It's the number one most requested item at Videoranch. We always write back apologizing and telling people not to hold their breath because Nez will NEVER put Live at the Palais out on CD as for as long as he lives.  Now, things have changed. Nez just listened to Live at the Palais for the first time in many years. And he thinks it's OK to put out on CD.  But he also thinks Live at the Britt is enough. There's no need to have two live Nez albums out. We ranch hands think Palais and Britt are totally different types of performances at two different times in Nez' career. We haven't decided what to do. Is Live at the Britt enough?  Please help us. If you have the time, and any feelings about Live at the Palais at all, please email us <foreman@videoranch.com> whether you would like to see Live at the Palais available on CD or not. Or call us toll free at 1-866-727-2639 (800-PAPANEZ). This will help our decision.

A few other things: Elephant Parts on VHS is on sale for the next 2 weeks at $15.95. Tapeheads on VHS' price has been lowered to $12.95. As John Cusack's character says in Tapeheads "you get a lot for your dollar". Click here to order http://www.videoranch.com/gshop/index.html?t=frindex&c=2

Television Parts Home Companion: Television Parts Home Companion is being manufactured as I write this email and should be available by the end of September.

Repo Man Collector's Tin DVD: The Repo Man Limited Edition Collector's Tin DVD (wow that's a long title) have been selling like hotcakes. We're running out and then that's it. So, if you're interested in it at all, now's the time to get one. I watched it the other night and the sound is amazing. Sounds so much better than when the movie first came out. And the commentary with Nez, Alex Cox and some of the cast members is hilarious and very illuminating.

That's all for now. Hope to hear from you regarding Live at the Palais!

Sincerely yours,
Navajo Slim

All credit should go to the writer, and its publisher, Billboard Online. Found @ www.billboard.com A Peak Into The Monkees' 'Headquarters' By Sean Egan LONDON - The story of the Monkees is one of the strangest in pop music history. It all began when four actors with incidental musical ability were recruited in 1965 to star in an NBC television show marrying surreal humor with fine pop craftsmanship. The only trouble was that said pop craftsmanship had little to do with them: session musicians and freelance songwriters provided almost all the music. When this fact became known, the group became instantly despised by the counter culture. But, the Monkees instigated an insurrection that saw them win creative control and the right to play on their own records. Triumphantly, their own music turned out to be as enjoyable as the stuff atop which they'd previously just overdubbed vocals. The result? The Monkees were still despised -- except by the millions of mostly female fans who continued to send their records to the top of the charts. This bizarre story has now reached what may be its concluding chapter, with Rhino Handmade's release of a Beatles "Anthology"-style box set demonstrating the incremental development of "Headquarters," the 1967 album on which the Monkees first fought to play. The original album shares space on three CDs of previously unreleased demos, early takes, studio gossip, and additional material from the recording sessions. "We had a huge falling out with the producers and the record company and we all stuck together on it," remembers Monkees drummer and lead singer Micky Dolenz of the Monkee uprising. Initially, Dolenz and Davy Jones -- who considered themselves primarily actors -- were less worried about playing on the records than colleagues Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork, primarily musicians. Things changed when the band's debut album was issued in October 1966. "When I discovered that they had not given any credit to the other musicians that had played, that did concern me because then it became apparent to me that the record company and the producers were being dishonest about the issue," Dolenz says. But things got worse. "More Of The Monkees" was released without the band's knowledge or consent in January 1967. The Monkees, now rivalling the Beatles in record sales, used their economic muscle to force a change, threatening to go on strike unless creative control was ceded to them. After initially warning them of legal action, their producers gave way. "For all of us, it was not to prove that we were the greatest musicians in the world," Dolenz says of "Headquarters." "It was about the spirit of the thing. This was about us and our artistic input. The music was what it was and the instrumentation and the technique and the abilities that each of us had. This was about, 'Hey, listen folks, this is what the real Monkees really sound like.'" It was a Dolenz song -- the excellent and somewhat subversive "Randy Scouse Git" - that was pulled off the album for release as a single in the U.K. Mysteriously, none of the album's tracks were released as singles in the States. "I think that was basically all those powers-that-be saying, 'Okay you guys, you got what you wanted -- now fuck you,'" Dolenz suggets. Nevertheless, the album shifted a million units, topped the charts, and is still considered one of the Monkees' best efforts. Strangely, though, they never made a "pure" record like it again. Although the Monkees retained creative control, the group went back to the old method of using session musicians on succeeding albums. "When it was done, we all kind of said, 'Okay, we've done that now. Let's move on and do something else.' We'd been there, done that, got the t-shirt. The only one that wasn't happy with that was Peter Tork. He claims that that was the reason that he quit," Dolenz says. Dolenz reports that he is ambivalent about the new "Headquarters" set. "I have mixed emotions about releasing unfinished works," he says. "This is the equivalent of releasing an artist's sketches after he's finished the painting and showing all the different stages. A lot of the stuff was a work in progress. A lot of it was simply goofing around. "On the other hand, for someone who was really into the Monkees and really into the music and really into what was going on behind the scenes, it's a lot of fun. To me, the most interesting stuff is the dialogue going on between each of us and the producer, Chip Douglas. That's very amusing and brings back a lot of memories." Dolenz's concerns notwithstanding, the release of the box set confirms the sea change in the perception of the Monkees since the '60s. Back then, the general public would have scoffed at the idea of the band receiving such reverential treatment three decades down the line. "I don't know if last laugh is the right term, but certainly there is some degree of vindication," Dolenz admits. ["Headquarters Sessions" is orderable only over the Internet. City Council today unanimously approved an 11th-hour resolution to authorize Cincinnati City Manager John Shirey to suspend the city's Loud Noise Ordinance to clear the way for the World's Largest Chicken Dance and Kazoo Band featuring Davy Jones of The Monkees at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. The official City Council resolution reads, in part: "Whereas, due to the enormous popularity of Davy Jones and the distribution of 30,000 free collectible kazoos, this massive, monumental and historic Chicken Dance and Kazoo Band stands to be in violation of Cincinnati Municipal Code Section 910-7, which prohibits any sound-producing instrument from emitting loud and raucous noises; and "Whereas, this Council has determined that it is in the best interest of the City of Cincinnati for its citizens to strike up the band in celebration of `Gemuetlichkeit,' which is German for `goodwill'; and "Whereas, this Council does not wish to see Davy Jones of The Monkees incarcerated, so long as he professes to be German during the Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati festivities, nor any other citizen incarcerated for taking part in the World's Largest Chicken Dance and Kazoo Band..." "Daydream Believers" will congregate en masse at 4 p.m. Saturday when Jones leads the largest music ensemble of all time on Cincinnati's historic Fountain Square during the 25th annual Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati. Dear Kirk and Sue
I am trying to get Michael his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I'm
sending you the information you need if you would like to help support the
campaign.
Thanks
Donna Bailey

A number of years ago, the Monkees received their star on the Hollywood Walk
of Fame for their TV show. Now it is time to show the world that Michael
Nesmith deserves his own star for his pioneering leaps in the music industry.
"Dedicated Friends", Michael's Official Fan Club, is leading a campaign to do
just that. Michael has approved this campaign, and has signed all the
necessary paperwork. Now we need your help.

ANNOUNCING THE OFFICIAL MICHAEL NESMITH WALK OF FAME STAR CAMPAIGN!

Picture Michael standing on a street in Hollywood with his fans gathered all
around and he is being awarded a star in front of all the media. Think of
what it would mean to Michael to see his work recognized and finally get the
credit he so rightly deserves for all the contributions he has made in the
music and entertainment field.

Michael deserves a star and we are going to get it for him!!!

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce requires a written statement from the
celebrity saying they agree to the nomination and that they will attend the
presentation ceremony. On July 14, 2000 Nez signed the letter which stated "I
grant Donna Bailey permission to nominate me for a Walk Of Fame Star. If I am
awarded the star, I agree to make a public appearance to receive the star."

"There are five categories to choose from: Motion Pictures, Live Theater,
Television, Recording and Radio. I have decided on Recording for Michael.

In order to get Michael his star, a letter must be submitted to the star
committee to prove to them he deserves it. I am also creating a video of Nez'
work to be sent it. We need to convince them that he IS an innovator,
pioneer and leader in new concepts for the music industry.  Was it the First
National Band's revolutionary country rock sound? Was it concept albums like
"The Prison" and "The Garden"? Was it the development of the music video? Or
maybe the beautiful mixture of Western and the tropics in "tropical
campfires"? What do you think makes Michael deserve this star?

The Walk of Fame Committee will meet to vote in June 2001. This will give me
the time needed to raise the funds to pay for the star , create the video and
research and write the letter to be sent in. I have opened up a special
account called the "Michael Nesmith Star Fund". The fee for the star is
$15,000. Anyone who contributes to the star fund will have their name and
address placed in a book to be given to Nez. Please understand that all money
contributed will be returned if Nez does not receive the star. If you want to
contribute please make your contribution payable to "Michael Nesmith Star
Fund ".

All funds MUST BE in U.S. currency!

Please enclose a self addressed stamped envelope with your donation to the
star fund. If Nez does not receive the star, your money will be returned in
this envelope...but if Nez DOES receive the star, your invitation to the
ceremony will arrive in this envelope! Please inform me if you change your
address.
Please send any and all ideas, and donations for the star fund to

Dedicated Friends, 1807 Millstream Drive, Frederick, Maryland 21702
or visit the "Dedicated Friends" website at http://www.nezfriends.com.

It could be YOUR idea that convinces that committee Nez deserves a star!
Let's all work together to get Michael his star!!!!

I was browsing around billboard.com to see what the country charts were doing, I noticed that The Monkees were the artist of the day for today (9/14). The link would be more than likely changed if you read this on the 15th, so I cut & pasted the article here. Sorry for it being such a long email.

A Peak Into The Monkees' 'Headquarters'       By Sean Egan
LONDON - The story of the Monkees is one of strangest in pop music
history.

The original album shares space on three CDs of previously
unreleased demos, early takes, studio gossip, and additional material from the recording sessions.

"When I discovered that they had not given any credit to the other musicians that had played, that did concern me because then it became
apparent to me that the record company and the producers were being dishonest about the issue," Dolenz says.

This was about, 'Hey, listen folks, this is what the real Monkees really sound like.'"It was a Dolenz song -- the excellent and somewhat subversive "Randy Scouse Git" - that was pulled off the album for release as a single in the U.K. Mysteriously,
none of the album's tracks were released as singles in the States. "I think that was basically all those powers-that-be saying, 'Okay you guys, you got what you wanted -- now f**k you,'" Dolenz suggests.

That's very amusing and brings back a lot of memories."
Dolenz's concerns notwithstanding, the release of the box set confirms the sea change in the perception of the Monkees since the '60s. Back then, the general public would have scoffed at the idea of the band receiving such reverential treatment three decades down the line.

"I don't know if last laugh is the right term, but certainly there is some degree of vindication," Dolenz admits.

I read this in the New York Post today under Neal Travis New York section.
Titled Manson Monkee business

ONE of the great urban myths of pop music has just been put to rest
by Davy Jones, an original member of the made-for-TV group The Monkees
serial killer Charles Manson never tried out to be a player in the
teenybopper ensemble, "I jokingly said (he did) because I meant that
everyone plus the kitchen sink wanted to be a Monkee," Davy told
Webster Hall art curator Baird Jones the other night at the Vuitton
celebration in Rockefeller Center.
"Stephen Stills auditioned and was turned down. Glen Campbell
played guitar for us for a while.  But no Charlie Manson, please,"
he said. "Within days of my remark, I was reading detailed reports
in national magazines about Manson sending in a cassette ...  Manson
being angry about not making the cut...
Manson wanting revenge against Davy Jones.  I started that rumor with
a bad joke and I've had to live with it for 30 years."

i had picked up a copy of Mojo at Borders cos the Who were on the cover...
flipping thru it today, i see an article on Julie Driscol.  this is from
page 78-79 of the september issue:

"Soon after the Andrews debacle, the Auger/Driscoll Trinity appeared in the
NBC-TB special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, directed by legendary Jack
Good. 'Good was such an amazing individual, a heavily unlikely guy to be in
rock'n'roll,' remembers Brian Auger. 'He'd turn up in his RAF blazer and
flannels and the old school tie, talking in an upper crust accent.  he'd
contacted our manager and said he had an idea for a special with the
Monkees.  Julie and I looked at each other.  The Monkees? But when I saw the
script and saw that they were basically making fun of each other, I said we
should go and do it.'

Viewed now, 33 1/3 looks like a dry run for Head, the Bob Rafelson-directed
movie where the Monkees savagely critiqued their own myth. 'They turned out
to be a great bunch of guys.  I was amazed at their attitude,' says Auger.
'We were getting fitted for our clothes and I'd be hanging in there
thinking, I hope I remember my lines. and Nesmith and the others were so
casual.  We had an insane time doing that show.'  Auger played several
roles, mad professor in his psychedelic laboratory and Charles Darwin among
them.  Then there were the stunts.  At one point Auger was required to
perform, precariously, on the top piano of a four-tiered piano sculpture,
while three other pianists hammered away beneath.  The others were Little
Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino.

For the show's finale Good assembled a cast of thousands.  Mike Nesmith
begins the proceedings, strumming an understated version of Listen to the
Band - Monkees unplugged style. The track then develops into a 10-minute
superjam featuring The Monkees, the Buddy Miles Express, the Clara Ward
Singers, assorted freaks ("Jack got all these people off Sunset Strip,"
remembers Auger) and the Auger/Driscoll Trinity.  'One take.  No rehearsal,'
says Auger. 'And the footage was shot as a video with blue screen -
chrome-a-key they called it. Those kinds of effects were revolutionary for
that time.'

So was the Music. There is one wonderful moment, with Listen To The Band
rapidly disintegrating into atonality, where Driscoll - sans face paint and
dressed in plain black sweater and jeans - hears her calling.  A look
somewhere between mischief and awe sneaks across her face and she begins to
what can only be described as pogo, leaping with glee on the spot like she's
suddenly been possessed. Then she starts giving it the full Yoko and the
track moves up into a whole new stratosphere."

there's also a review of the Headquarters Sessions in the same Mojo
Magazine, page 86.
