Check out their original movie "Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The Early Years" narrated by Ringo Starr. The Monkees are featured in two segments of the movie. One segment focuses on the TV show where "The Theme from The Monkees" can be heard in the background. The second segment looks at "Head" and features "Porpoise Song." Both segments present mini-interviews with Micky Dolenz. Be on the lookout throughout the rest of the movie following those segments for brief flashes of The Monkees, including a glimpse of Micky at the Monterey Pop Festival! Hello all,
Here's an update on the whole SHOE SUEDE BLUES "SUMMERTIME BLUES" Tour

Tickets are $5.00 each which will be donated to "CRUISE FOR KIDS" -- a
local Easter Seals charity project that takes children with disabilities
for a day on the Chesapeake Bay aboard boats.  This was originally
slated as a "no-cover-charge" event, but the owners of the venue are
very active in local charity and decided to use this gig as a charity
benefit.

TUNE IN TO 103.1FM from 11am-Noon on Sunday -- Peter and the boys will
be live on WRNR's "Sunday Brunch" award-winning radio show, talking and
(maybe) playing!

* July 10, Upstairs at Tierney's, Valley Road, Montclair, NJ,
973-744-9785

* July 12, Benefit for Habitat for Humanity, Vernon Township High School
Auditorium, Route 565, Vernon, NJ, 914-355-3024.

* July 13, The Legendary Tannersville Inn, Route 611, Tannersville, PA,
570-629-3131

this venue on Thursday night: 7:00-9:15 and 10:00-12:15.  Tickets are
$10.00 per show, and there's a special dinner & show combination package
deal.
For $28.00 you can see either the 7pm or the 10pm show in the club PLUS
have full dinner either before or after the show (your choice).  Kitchen
is open til 1am!  Call Tannersville Inn, 570-629-3131 for tickets and
details.    There will be a short opening act (an Atlantic City comic)
for each performance.  Keep in mind that Pennsylvania has a fluky law
about people under 21 being in
a bar after 10pm - MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The earlier show may be the answer to this situation for the under 21's
coming on the tour.

* July 14, Backstage With The Boys fan party at Briggs Farm Blues
Festival, Nescopeck, PA, 1-3 pm, A LIMITED NUMBER OF TICKETS ARE STILL
AVAILABLE for this special function.  Tickets are now available ONLY

I saw a commercial today on ESPN during the home run derby showings of years
past. It is a SportsCenter commercial about music entertainers becoming
agents for sports figures. Among several others, Davy Jones is seen yelling
about how the negotiations for someone should be approached. Then it flashes
to someone else, and back to Davy who yells some more and slams the palm of
his hand on the table. I only saw them run it twice while I was watching.
Keep a look out.

VH1 Original Movie Premiere 'Daydream Believers: The Monkees Story' And
Special Monkees Programming Score A Hit With Viewers

6.2 Million Viewers Tune In For June 28 Monkee Marathon

NEW YORK, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 6.2 million viewers tuned in to VH1 on
Wednesday, June 28, for a night of Monkees mania capped by the debut of the
network's original movie "Day Dream Believers: The Monkees Story."  The
evening (8pm-3am ET/PT) included airings of "The Monkees: Behind the Music"
in addition to the movie.

Of the total 6.2 million viewers who watched the Monkee-thon, the audience
included 5 million in the VH1 P18-49 target demographic.

Through the five weeks of VH1 "Movies That Rock," a summer festival of
original and acquired films presented on Wednesday nights, the network has
seen a 76% increase over last year among P18-49.

"Daydream Believers: The Monkees Story" tells the dramatic true story of the
four young actors-musicians who were cast in the phenomenally popular 1960s
TV series, and the problems that eventually arise when they start believing
they're the real thing.  George Stanchev, Jeff Geddis, L.B. Fisher, Aaron
Lohr, Colin Ferguson and Wallace Langham star in the film, which will air
again on Saturday, July 29 at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

VH1 produces and programs a wide variety of music-based series, specials,
live events and acquisition-based programming that keep viewers in touch with
the music they love.  VH1 is a registered trademark of MTV Networks, a unit
of Viacom Inc.  MTV Networks owns and operates the cable television
programming services MTV:  Music Television, MTV 2:  Music Television,
Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, TV Land and VH1 as well as The Suite from MTV
Networks, a package of ten digital services, all of which are trademarks of
MTV Networks. MTV Networks also has joint ventures, licensing agreements and
syndication deals whereby its programming can be seen worldwide.

On the Set of the New Monkees Movie

It had snowed in Toronto just days earlier, forcing the beach volleyball
scene in Daydream Believers: The Monkees' Story to be filmed on wrap day,
April 14. The sun was out, but it was chilly. Still, the teenage extras
had to sit for hours in bikinis on Lake Ontario's Sunnyside beach. For
the discerning viewer, only their lily white skin betrayed the fact that
this was not Los Angeles, September, 1966.

"Amazingly, Toronto has not only stood in for California, it's stood in
for Manchester, London, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Hawaii," marvels the
film's director Neill Fearnley(Escape From Mars, Dogmatic, Johnny 2.0),
who is making the film on a budget of $3.4 million.

The cast -- Canadians George Stanchev (Davy Jones) and Jeff Geddis (Mike
Nesmith), alongside Americans L.B. Fisher (Peter Tork) and Aaron Lohr
(Micky Dolenz) -- are assembled on a blanket for the Beach Pavilion
dialogue scene in which they discuss the craziness of the past year.

"The show's not even on the air yet and every teenager girl in America
wants a piece of him," says "Mike" of Davy.

"Davy" complains about a girl who breaks into his dressing room. "I found
her naked on my couch."

The made-for-TV movie is produced by Toronto's Pebblehut, a division of
Montreal's Muse Entertainment Enterprises, which acquired the rights to
the Monkees' music in 1999 from Rhino Records as well as to the Harold
Bronson book, Hey Hey We're the Monkees, on which Ron McGee's screenplay
is based. "The genesis is from that book," says Fearnley, "and then we've
added other things."

Many viewers will be surprised to learn that Jimi Hendrix opened for the
Monkees and Jack Nicholson wrote the band's psychedelic full-feature
release Head. The cast also discovered some idiosyncrasies that
personified the original actors.

Lohr (Newsies, Mighty Ducks 2 and 3) was given leeway by the director to
improvise in the movie, such as wearing the baby's hat or putting toys in
his mouth, because Micky was so playful. "I wanted to capture his
essence, his charm and child-like qualities," Lohr explains.

Stanchev, who has his own pop album out on Bulgaria's Ka Music, had to
master Davy's dance. "Everybody [on set] started comparing it to Axl
Rose's little sway thing," he laughs.

Apparently Peter had a dual personality. "There was a difference between
Peter Tork, the character, which was the dumb, fun-loving guy, and Peter
Tork, the person, who was the serious musician, the intellect," says
Fisher, whose acting credits include Felicity and ER. "He also smiles a
lot and wore his belt buckle sideways, so it didn't scratch his guitar."

On a darker note, Geddis, who plays the first victim in Friday the 13th
Part 10, due in October, reveals that there is a bit of blood shed in
Daydream Believers. "I do one scene where I punch a hole in the wall and
I've got a little bit of blood on my knuckles," he says.

The story follows the prefab Sixties pop group through the audition
process for the TV show, its cancellation, the creation of the box office
disaster Head, and, finally, the foursome's realization some months later
that it had been a fun ride.

"So it ends on an up note," says Fearnley.

The film is scheduled to air in the summer of 2000 on VH1 in America, and
on TMN/Superchannel in Canada.

===============================

The part of Hendrix is being played by famed Toronto guitarist Tony
Springer who played Hendrix in a tribute band called FIRE for years. He
would go on to a luke warm solo career under the handle Wild T. And The
Spirit...but made headlines when David Bowie saw a Wild T. video on
MuchMusic one day and invited Springer to be the guitarist for the "Black
Tie..." tour.

I haven't seen any mention of this on the list:

Has anybody seen this week's Examiner?  It has a headline:  "Charles
Manson tried to be a Monkee" and a picture (ca.1966) of Davy, Micky and
Mike, but instead of Peter there's old Charlie himself.   Inside the
rag, uh I mean *mag* there's an article rehashing the rumor, complete
with some psychobabble from a Dr? Jane Greer.  There's also another
picture with Charlie inserted.

It's all pretty tasteless, but I nearly peed my pants laughing,
especially at the pictures.

Back to lurking.

Hello from Videoranch!

Thought we'd better tell you about KPIG.

It's a radio station out of Central California. It started out in the 70's as KFAT, then turned into KPIG.  It's one of the most respected stations among artists like Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, Dwight Yoakam, and, of course, Nez. The DJs only play the music they love. They're not swayed by advertisers or trends. And they have amazing taste in music. The format is Texas Blues, Memphis Blues and Country Rock. They play Nez all the time and have been supporters and fans of his music since the early 70s.

They also have comedy bits and "Hog Calls" from listeners trying to sell things like old tires, row boats and bird baths. Plus, they have very funny commercials (people find themselves actually turning the volume up to hear the ads). One of the commercials is Nez talking about Videoranch (he was a good sport and agreed to do the voiceover for us).

KPIG was the first radio station in the world to start streaming their broadcast over the net 24 hours a day and have become the most listened to radio station on the net. If you like Nez' music and his comedic sensibilities, then I highly recommend you take a listen to KPIG. http://www.videoranch.com/html/kpig.html

And remember you can listen to KPIG while you1re in Videoranch 3D too. Just look around for KPIG speakers (they're all over the place) and click on one. It1s a nice thing to listen to while you're taking a stroll. One of the  http://www.videoranch.com/html/vr3dbrowser.html

Each one is in the red 8-button shirt, with their name embroidered in black, and in gold, their instrument (I didn't look too closely at all of them but Micky's got a drum on his shirt), and the logo is embroidered on the back. They're manufactured by Dart Flipcards Inc. The box has an email on it, for the manufacturer: dart@total.net I don't know where else they might be found. They might not even be at all Walmarts. This movie is the reason Devo re-recorded their hit "Baby Doll" in Swedish and features other great music a made-up singing duo called The Swanky Modes (played by Junior Walker and Sam Moore). In fact, the soundtrack (which is amazingly hard to find) is a lot of fun. Executive produced by Mike Nesmith, the film is full of fun cameos, in-jokes and just plain odd humor. This weekend is the 2000 Council on Ideas. Every other year, The Gihon Foundation, Nez' family foundation, invites a small group of respected thinkers to the Santa Fe area to spend a weekend identifying the most important issue of the day. This group of thinkers is the Council on Ideas. This year, the Council members are: DePaul College of Law Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni, a longtime advocate of international peace and justice; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, Stanley Karnow; American physicist and 1969 Nobel Prize recipient, Murray Gell-Mann; poet, essayist, educator and highly sought after lecturer, Nikki Giovanni; and internationally respected anthropologist, Anna C. Roosevelt. On the final day of the summit, Sunday, July 23, the 2000 Council on Ideas will make a special presentation of its Position Statement to the public and press. Some of the council alumni will also be attending. This alumni include Emmy Award-winning actress and producer, Jane Alexander; famed zoologist, Stephen Jay Gould; Washington Post writer, Roberto Suro; internationally renowned architect, Frank O. Gehry; Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Arno Penzias; Native American Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, poet and artist, N. Scott Momaday; syndicated columnist, Georgie Anne Geyer, and former President of NBC News and PBS, Lawrence K. Grossman. The Videoranch Cam will be at the Gihon Foundation all weekend filming the Council events. Sunday's cam shots should have some interesting people in them. A chef from Los Angeles named Celestino Drago will be cooking an incredible meal for the guests, and we'll have cam shots of him preparing the meal as well. At noon Mountain Daylight Time on Sunday, we will be streaming the audio of the above mentioned presentation of the Position Statement. You need to have either Real Player 7 or later or Winamp installed on your computer to hear it. You can download both of these pieces of software for free on the net. PC users can listen to the streaming presentation from inside Videoranch 3D. The speaker that will be playing the live stream is just underneath the right Ranch Cam screen, at 1S 0W. Mac users, go to www.gihon.com and click on the streaming link at the top of the home page. You can also just open up Real Player or Winamp and type in the following URL address: http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=501370&addr=207.111.214.243:8050&file=filename.pls (I highly recommend you copy and paste this unwieldy address from this email). The stream won't start until noon on Sunday. So if you click on it before then, it won't be active. This is probably going to be very interesting a lot of fun so I hope you can tune in. After a day and a half sequestered in a Nambé retreat house, a panel of decorated anthropologists, physicists and other mental giants wrote a three-page, single-spaced assessment Sunday morning of what they saw as the most crucial issue facing the world today. The five concluded that globalization has given humanity the ability to make decisions affecting everyone on Earth, often negatively, and harm the biosphere in which we live. The group's communiqué ended the latest chapter in an unusual Nambé think tank — one that, in spirit, started with the invention of Liquid Paper and ties the 1960s pop band, The Monkees, to some of the world's most powerful minds. The five are members of the Council on Ideas, a project of the Gihon Foundation based in Nambé. Every two years, the Foundation invites five heavy-weight thinkers to its grassy headquarters 20 miles north of Santa Fe for a day and a half dedicated to identifying "the most crucial issue facing society today," according to Gihon literature. The purpose, according to Michael Nesmith, head of the Gihon Foundation's board of trustees, is to seed the world with ideas. What the world does with those ideas is out of his hands. "There's the natural impetus of the idea itself, which we really don't control," he said. The Gihon Foundation merely facilitates the idea. They bring in the great minds, put them up in nice hotels and give them good food. At the end of the council weekend of work, the foundation announces its idea to the world. After that, Nesmith said, the idea has a life of its own. It may thrive and change the world, or it may die with little attention. No one knows what seemingly random connections the idea will help create. Nesmith ought to know. He has lived his life among seemingly random connections. In the early 1960s, his mother, Bette Graham, was a single mom in Dallas, raising her only son by working as a secretary and part-time commercial artist. If an artist makes a mistake, she just paints over it. Secretaries at the time had no way to correct typing mistakes. Graham "connected those two dots," Nesmith said, and invented Liquid Paper in her kitchen. A few years later, she moved her business into a portable, metal building in her back yard. (It's now on display at the Gihon Foundation headquarters.) The rest, as we know, is secretarial history. Graham built the company into a multimillion dollar outfit and sold it to Gillette in 1979 for $47.5 million. Graham died in 1980. She started the Gihon Foundation in 1978 with the aim of taking ideas and using them for the public good. By that time, Nesmith was a household name in his own right, achieving fame in the late 1960s as the wool-hatted member of The Monkees. He also had a solo singing career and is widely credited with inventing the idea behind MTV. Nesmith won the first Grammy in the category of home video for a music video he made called "Elephant Parts." So it may not seem all that strange to Nesmith that an idea forged in a tiny New Mexico town could crawl its way to global change. "There are some hidden forces at work," he said. "There's a diversity of influences, and you say to yourself, 'How did this possibly happen?' You just connect some dots." Nesmith coined the Council on Ideas 10 years ago. The first panel could not come to a consensus and produced nothing — short of the members' own experiences — in Nambé. Subsequent councils, however, have identified everything from world civilization to humanity's willingness to learn as "crucial issues." This year's panel included Anna Roosevelt, an award-winning anthropologist; Nikki Giovanni, a professor and poet; Murray Gell-Mann, a physicist, winner of a 1969 Nobel Prize and co-founder of the Santa Fe Institute; M. Cherif Bassiouni, winner of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize; and Stanley Karnow, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist known for his comprehensive coverage of the Vietnam War. "It's a very valuable exercise," Karnow said. "Everyone has something to say, coming from different directions." The diversity of the group is no accident. According to Nesmith, a team of nominators spends about a year selecting the panel. After the group read its communiqué at a noon press conference and spent the afternoon eating a five-course meal under a tent in the foundation's back yard, all participants agreed they were happy with their work. Yes, it's a bit esoteric. But they were not invited to Nambé to implement change, only to identify where it ought to happen. "We're not responsible for solutions," Giovanni said. "Advertising studies impact. The rest of us do what we think we have to do." ******************************************************************************** www.sfnewmexican.com Putting heads together By TOM SHARPE/For The New Mexican, The New Mexican - 7/24/2000 NAMBE - The next time you ponder world issues, remember Liquid Paper and The Monkees. These two anachronisms converge every two years in the Council on Ideas, when scholars assemble at an elegant Nambè compound to consider the most important issue of the day. The 2000 Council on Ideas concluded its weekend retreat on Sunday. The semiannual event is funded by the Gihon Foundation, set up by the inventor of Liquid Paper, the late Bette Graham, and administered by her son, former Monkee Michael Nesmith. He said that after his mother died in 1980, the foundation doled out grants from $5,000 to $25,000 to business proposals and social services for a decade. But he said he never thought they were enough to make a difference and felt they were redundant with government programs. So in 1990, the Gihon foundation switched gears and began convening councils to consider the weightiest issue of the day at the foundation's new headquarters in Nambè. Nesmith, who lives next door, also has moved his mother's workshop to Nambè and enshrined it as a museum, with mixers and other items used to create Liquid Paper as well as examples of the early products. Graham was a Dallas secretary who used her art skills at home to create a fluid that masked her typing errors at work. By 1964, her homemade product was selling so well that she moved the operation out of her kitchen and into a portable building in her back yard. Nesmith helped her mix, package and distribute Liquid Paper, which caught on in the precomputer days. The company went global. Graham continued to direct it until 1979, when she sold it to Gillette for $47.5 million, leaving her a wealthy woman. Before she died in 1980, she set up a traveling exhibit of art works by modern female artists and endowed the Gihon Foundation, named after a river in the Bible, to assist women in business. Graham's traveling art collection, including works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Grandma Moses, Louise Nevelson, Mary Cassatt and Janet Fish, was permanently hung in a refurbished barn on the 12-acre Nambè estate. In the meantime, Nesmith had his own share of fame. In 1965, the 22-year-old aspiring guitarist was chosen at an audition for a television serial patterned after the Beatles film Hard Days Night. The Monkees ran on NBC from 1966 to 1968 and continues in reruns worldwide. After the show ended and the group broke up, Nesmith went on to a solo career in music and video. He has lived part time in Nambè with his partner Victoria Kennedy for the last 11 years. He has published a novel and is pursuing Internet marketing with his Web site at www.videoranch.com. And his time is also occupied by running his mother's foundation and its activities. The first Council on Ideas, made up of columnist Georgie Anne Geyer, television executive Lawrence Grossman and playwright Wendy Wasserstein, couldn't reach a consensus. So Nesmith refined the process, choosing five panelists from different disciplines and ethnicities via a complex system that begins months earlier with meetings with local leaders in major cities. This year's council began with a meeting in the fall of 1999 in Seattle. The council begins on Saturday morning with Nesmith giving the group, each of whom are paid $5,000 plus expenses, a short talk on the need to reach a consensus and discard issues on which they disagree. Then they are left alone. On Sunday morning, after an evening in Santa Fe, the panelists return to Nambè to finish writing their statement in time for a noon news conference followed by a catered luncheon. This year's luncheon was made by Los Angeles chef Celestino Drago. The 2000 Council on Ideas included poet Nikki Giovanni, physicist Murray Gell-Mann, lawyer M. Cheriff Bassiouni, anthropologist Anna C. Roosevelt and journalist Stanley Karnow. They were assigned to answer the question "What is the most important issue of our time?" This year, for the first time, selected reporters and others were allowed to listen in on the deliberations via a headset wired to a microphone in the room, provided that the listeners agree to notify foundation officials when the panelists need something. In a telephone interview last week from his home in Potomac, Md., Karnow, who won the Pulitzer Prize for reporting on Vietnam and recently published Paris in the Fifties, admitted he didn't know what to expect. "I've been kicking around the world for 50 years now, so I have some ideas about things, but I'm a blank piece of paper here," he said. But by Sunday's news conference, Karnow seemed like an old pro at the process. Santa Fe resident Gell-Mann, a Nobel Prize winner for his discovery of the quark, the smallest known division of atoms, said he had typed most of the statement. Bassiouni, an expert in international law at DePaul University in Chicago, and Roosevelt, an expert in the people of the Amazon region and a resident of Evanston, Ill., also spoke at length about their ideas and the deliberations. But the most memorable comment came from the reticent Giovanni, the only black person on the panel, in response to a question about issues upon which she disagreed with the others. "What I see is that people will take a sexual preference, or what they perceive as a sexual preference, and they'll beat Matthew Shepard to death," she said. "They used to lynch us. Now, we are using homosexuality as an excuse to kill people and frighten the rest of the population into silence." Giovanni, who teaches at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., said she wanted to bring up gay issues, as well her beliefs that prisoners should be allowed to vote and that fundamental Christianity is "sick," but discarded these items because the other panelists did not fully agree. You could criticize the Council of Ideas as the ultimate sound bite. Its statement goes to no one other than the general media and carries no authority. But Nesmith said its most interesting effect is that on the panelists who are forced to find common ground. "It stimulates people on a level they're not used to," he said. "Something happens, but I don't know exactly what it is." "What is the most important issue of our time?" @fix:The 2000 Council on Ideas issued a statement that reads, in part: "We are living in a time of accelerating globalization, and not only in commerce, finance, and communications. We now have the ability to make very significant changes on a global scale that affect humankind and the rest of the biosphere. "The human race is facing a wide range of tightly connected challenges, including issues of war and peace, extremes of poverty and wealth, intolerance and tolerance, resource exploitation and biological diversity, and crime and the rule of law. "The potential use of weapons of mass destruction by individuals and groups as well as nations poses a very serious danger. Meanwhile, conflicts with conventional weapons are causing tragedy in many parts of the world. Yet the major organizers of large-scale violence usually remain unpunished as the international community pursues expedient political settlements, ignoring the maxim that without justice there can be no peace. "The appearance of centralized and stratified societies over the last ten thousand years or so, the growth of human populations, and the development of new technologies have greatly increased human impacts on the environment. Today, locally and globally, the physical environment is being degraded and biological diversity is being lost on a large scale. It is important to implement the 'planetary bargain,' by which developed nations share the cost of environmental protection in the developing world. "Achievement of economic and social justice includes the need for reducing the enormous gaps between the rich and the poor among and within societies. Access to resources, justice, education, technology, and security is often very unequal, and these inequalities are often associated with differences in race, ethnicity, gender, age, and nationality. "In addressing these and other crucial challenges, their interdependence must be recognized. Yet our transnational and national institutions deal with them in a compartmentalized way. There is no intregrative strategy. In addition, the bureaucracies need to pursue their goals with greater adaptability, including accountability and transparency, responsiveness to criticism, and flexibility in the face of change. Responding to these concerns requires balance between the rights and prerogatives of communities and those of individuals." For the complete text of the statement, see www.gihon.com. Randi L.
