Times listed are Pacific. Hey, Hey We're the Monkees 08:00pm Sun, Jun 14 TLC 11:00pm Sun, Jun 14 TLC The Monkees began in 1966 as a series about a fictional rock group made up of Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones. But the concept---and the quartet---eventually took on a life of its own. "We were actors and musicians put togetherto be a band," Jones says. This delightful retrospective recounts the genesis of the show and its inspired hybrid of rock and comedy that became an important precursor to the music-video genre. The Monkees recall the furor over their initial recordings (on which they provided only the vocals) and their subsequent battle to perform their own studio tracks. "We did make music," insists Tork. Also: the group's encounters with Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles; and the trippy film flop "Head" (co-written by Jack Nicholson). Randi L. For all you fans of South Park, there was a quick shot of Micky and Mike that was supposed to be in a medical book of some sort.... It's a weird storyline, but one of the kid's mom opened up this book to explain a disease they made up on the show; of course, now I can't remember what they called it, but it had something to do with twins being connected (I know, this show is warped!) and then one of them not surviving. Anyway, the pic was supposed to be an example of this disease. It's just a big shot of Mick's & Mike's heads put together (so it looks like they're connected), and they look like they were taken from a RR clip. I doubt anyone but a major fan would have been able to tell, but I saw it right away! I can't say that it was a compliment to them or anything...but I thought it deserved a mention. Enjoy the rest of the week! Amy ASzmania@aol.com "It's always *something*!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This show is supposed to repeat on Saturday on Comedy Central. From ???@??? Kyle's mother was trying to explain about conjoined twins (which is the current term for siamese twins). 2. The picture in the book was indeed a shot of Micky and Mike's heads from a rainbow room romp (I thought it was pretty funny). Photographer Henry Diltz gets a "thanks" in the closing credits! 2. South Park usually repeats Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. Eastern Time and again at midnight (which I guess would technically be 12:00 a.m. Monday, Eastern Time). --lisa From ???@??? The subject comes up when Yoakam is discussing the tunes on his new album, which include "the churning neo-rockabilly stomp of 'Only Want You More' [which] also receives an alternate reading, 'Maybe You Like It, Maybe You Don't', which allows Yoakam to indulge his ongoing Elvis Presley fetish.....the variant version takes its title from a treatment for a new Monkees movie, written by his friend Mike Nesmith. Collapsing with laughter, Yoakam explains, 'It ends up with [the Monkees] being in a spot where things that don't go on, that are only reported in tabloid journalism, actually DO go on. Like Martians abduct people, Elvis does live. I was gonna end up maybe playing Elvis. Elvis is worked up, because he's been locked in exile so long he's still alive, but he hasn't been able to perform for 20-some-odd years. He's desperate to do anything, and he's begging the Monkees to let him sit in, as pathetic a scenario as that is...At one point he's worked up a little bit of "I'm A Believer", and in an embarrassed way he says, "I'll do a little bit of it for ya, m-m-m-maybe you like it, maybe you don't."'" maggie monkeebiz@prodigy.com From ???@??? This must be the one Rhino used that used to be owned by that DJ in LA. What do you think? thanks! From: Moltar Subject: Finding the Monkeemobile Rumor had it that the vehicle known as the "Monkeemobile" was located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Since Gatlinburg is about forty- five minutes away from where I live, it had become a personal mission of mine to find it. Today my dad, sister, and grandparents went to Gatlinburg to eat Father's Day dinner. It wasn't exactly impressive, we could have had food of the same quality in town, but it was Father's Day and it was what my father wanted to do. Well, I couldn't help but mention the fact that the Monkeemobile was supposed to be in Gatlinburg. My sister rolled her eyes, but I managed to convince my dad to let me see if I could find it. I went to the brouchure rack in the restaurant and one jumped out at me: "Star Cars: Hollywood Movie and TV Car Museum". If the Monkeemobile was in Gatlinburg, I was pretty sure it would be there. I called their number and sure enough, they had it! The Museum was down the street, and my dad gave in and said we could go after dinner. I was so excited to see it, and I got scared what would happen if I was actually going to meet one of the Monkees. All of this for a car. Oh well. All the way to the museum, my grandmother kept on saying "I didn't know you liked the Beatles" and "So were the Beatles British?". My dad, of all people, corrected her. When we reached the museum, the lower level was a big open area with the original Herbie the Lovebug and a few other famous cars. One wall was a mirror with a huge Monkees guitar logo on it and pictures of Davy, Peter, Micky, and Mike's heads. My sister grabbed me and dragged me underneath Mike's head and stood under Micky's (she's a Dolenzkateer) and had my dad take a picture of us. That was nice, but I wanted to see the Monkeemobile. We went upstairs, and at the end of a hallway there was a sign that read "The George Barris Collection." We rounded the corner at the end of the hallway, and I noticed a video playing in a room off to the side. "Mary Frances!" my sister yelled and turned me around. There it was. Shiny, beautiful, and red was the Monkeemobile. My hands instantly go out and touch the hood, then travel to the Monkees logo on the side of the body. Then I couldn't help it, I leaned inside the car and touched the driver's seat. (No, I really don't like Mike all that much, I swear!) I then have to touch every seat and nearly any part of it I can reach. The driver's side was pushed up near a wall, and I was wondering if I could get around the car somehow to get a better look when my sister pointed to a sign. "Please do not touch vehicles. This exhibit is under video surveillance [sp]. If you do, we will send security personell to escort you out of the museum." "Oh crap!" I yelled and ran to the opposite side of the museum. I hid over near the Batmobile (I want that car too!) for a good while when I realized that no one was coming to take me away. I went and enjoyed the rest of the museum, and then I poked my head into the video room and saw some guy (obviously *not* Jean Deffries) babble about how he designed the Monkeemobile "so that they would have plenty of space to carry around their instruments." I got a good giggle out of that. I then went a revisited the Monkeemobile for a quick good-bye, then we left the museum. I had a good time, and you can actually see parts of the floormat worn out where the driver rested his heel. (My sister asked me if I wanted to take DNA samples to see if that was Nez's imprint. She'll regret that remark later) It was a lot of fun. My dad took lots of pictures, which I will try and get up on my webpage ASAP. If you're ever in Gatlinburg for some strange reason, visit Star Cars and see the Monkeemobile. From ???@??? Printed in the Thursday June 18, 1998 edition (they did mispell Micky): JONES, FORMER MONKEE SINGS A SARCASTIC TUNE At 52, Davy Jones is one angry, old Monkee. Terse and bitter during a phone interview from his Los Angeles apartment, the pint-size, flower-power, heartthrob admits, however sardonically, that money was a big reason why he teamed with Bobby Sherman and Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits for the "Teen Idols Tour" "No, I don't want any money," Jones says dryly from his apartment in Los Angeles. Sarcasm makes his saccharine Manchester accent sound as alien as Alvin and the Chipmunks doing Marilyn Manson covers. "I don't want to be paid for it," Jones continues in the same biting tone, "I just want a cheese sandwich and a roof over my head." One would think a man who'd serenaded Marcia Brady, subsequently fulfilling her teen fantasies on a moving episode of "The Brady Bunch" could put shallow material wants behind him. But "potloads" of money are high on the priority list of the performer who gained fame in the mid-to late 60's as a member of a faux rock group assembled for the psychedelic TV show, "The Monkees." As Monkee, Jones and his pals Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork held instruments they weren't allowed to play as they sang songs they didn't write. However, Jones *will* perform such Monkees classics as "Daydream Believer" on the tour, in addition to new material, including a song recently written by Noone and himself. According to Jones, he's never had conflicts with his old Monkee handlers over whether he could perform old Monkees songs on his own or with the group on reunion tours. "We don't have to ask permission for things like that," he says. After all, it would hardly make sense for Jones not to sing his hits for an audience sure to include die-hard Monkee fans hungry for a blast from the past. "I have my theme songs, and people know me. It's not something I have to work terribly hard at," he says. "I am not looking for success, I already have it," he adds. Many of the aging fans attending the "Teen Idols Tour" probably considered the Monkee boy a 60's sex symbol, something Jones seems a bit confrontational about discussing now. "If it's the sex symbol thing, that's their personal business," he says. "I don't perform one song for people who want to see my [rear] and another for the people who just want to hear me sing" From ???@??? SOURCE Blockbuster Entertainment ----------------------------------------------------------------- Do we have any more bids?? I've seen the box set for lower than that. At The Duffel Bag (http://www.duffelbag.com) it's $282.99 minus shipping and handling. I don't think it's too much more with it. Bye for now! Lena From: webmaster@rhinorecords.com (webmaster) Subject: Video Box Set Price Here's an update about the price of the Monkees Video Box. Through Rhino Direct's catalog order center (800 / 432-0020), the price is $299.95. The Rhino website has had the product listed for $399.95, but that will be changing to $299.95 by next week. Thanks for your time, webmaster www.rhino.com From: SuperLorin@aol.com I got my box set for $220 at a store called Toones in Allentown, PA. I don't live there, but they shipped it to me for I think $5. I'm not sure if it was just a sale or not, but it's worth checking out. -Lorin The Monkees Alert list is moderated. I bought one last Friday for this low low price; but the discount will not last forever! Also the Music Boulevard.Com price was a sale price that ended at midnight on June 29th. So take advantage of CDnow's price. Even without the 20% off discount, their price is still better than Music Blvd and way way better than Rhino!! Good Luck, Tina.
