Hi,

Here's a picture and article from the Danbury News-Times regarding David's
booksigning in CT, Sunday, March 26th.

The fans still love Davy Jones
Crowd waits in line to see ex teen idol
By Jerry Belli
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-TIMES
DANBURY Thirty-four years have passed since he burst on the scene as the lead singer for The Monkees and became an instant teen-age heartthrob. Davy Jones still makes his fan's hearts race wherever he goes.
Over 300 fans waited in line yesterday for a chance to meet Jones, and have their picture taken with the international idol. He was scheduled to appear at the Danbury Fair mall at noon, to sign copies of his latest book, "Daydream Believin'."
By 10 o'clock a line was already forming and would continue to grow right up until the 2 o'clock cutoff. Fans brought memorabilia from both The Monkees and Jones' solo career, albums, tapes, books, even a Monkees lunch box for him to sign.
As Vera DePoto of Danbury waited in line she held a postcard from The Monkees Fan Club. "Look at this," DePoto said. "It's postmarked 1966. It's taken me 34 years to get it signed."
Tami Tozzoli of Danbury was listening to 98Q when she heard that Jones would be in Danbury. "I couldn't believe it. I never thought he would come to Connecticut."
"He said on the radio that he is recently divorced and would like to find a nice Connecticut girl," Tozzoli said. "I went crazy and called my girlfriend right away. I'm going to give him my number and see what happens."
However, after she met Jones and was descending the steps, still holding the slip of paper with her phone number on it, Tozzoli said, "All right, I chickened out."
Stephanie Mikhail of New York waited to meet Jones for the first time since 1967. She has seen him perform five times in the last year.
"I still have his autograph from when I was 13," Mikhail said. "I've seen him perform all over the country and have made many lasting friendships with people I've met at his shows."
"I know his shows inside out," Mikhail said, "now I go for the people. We all met because of Davy."
For new fans, such as 15-year-old Danbury resident, Keri Narowski, it was a chance to meet an idol she watches regularly on reruns of The Monkees.
"I was so excited to see him that I ran down here," Narowski said. "He's hot. He may be much older now but he's still so cute."
Both Keri and her brother, Eric, recently performed in a local production of "Bye, Bye, Birdie." Jones made their day as he sang them "What's the matter with kids today," one of the songs from the play.
Jones is no stranger to the stage. Before his stardom with The Monkees, Jones appeared as The Artful Dodger in the smash hit West End production of "Oliver!" He later originated the role on Broadway, and at age 16, received a Tony Award nomination for the role.
After the breakup of The Monkees, Jones returned to the theater and appeared in national touring companies of "Oliver!," reprising the role of The Artful Dodger, and later appearing as Fagin, which received rave reviews.
"My kids kept telling me that it was about time I started acting my age," Jones said. "So I took on the role of Fagin, and so far I've been having a lot of fun with it."
Fun seems to be an integral part of Jones' life. He is not content to rest on his past achievements but constantly seeks to reinvent himself. His solo career combines new songs he has written with dialogue/standup comedy.
"People want something different," Jones said. "I don't just go out there and sing, I tell jokes and interact with the crowd. I especially love performing in Vegas, it's unbelievable out there, better than Disney World."
In addition to his music and acting career Jones is an avid equestrian and maintains his amateur jockey license. On Feb 1, 1996, Jones won his first race under rules in England. He continues to ride and train winners, and has serious aspirations of training any one of numerous racehorses for a Maryland Cup victory.
"I love racing, though I'm about 130 pounds right now, that's a little heavy for a jockey," Jones said.

As the article states, the turnout was fantastic and David was so happy to
see everyone there on a sunny Sunday afternoon!

Enjoy!

It's on the front page of the section called Life Style. Here's the article: Back when we heard Micky Dolenz was coming to the 3 Rivers Music Festival, our first thought was this: Hey, just what Columbia needs, another festival. No, hang on, that's a different column. This one's about Dolenz, the former Monkee drummer, and his brothers-in-arms in the ranks of teen idolatry. It's been more than 30 years since the Monkees' heyday, but here's our man Micky still riding the wave of nostalgia onto the 3 Rivers shoreline. (No wonder he's a believer.) Now, we know Dolenz has branched out as a director and children's performer since his days as an integral part of a pop-music phenomenon. For instance, he's performing on the kids' stage this weekend. But he forever remains a Monkee in most people's minds. On a side note, we would like to set the record straight here before moving on. Despite what the Breakfast Bunch morning crew at Oldies 103 says, we do not have some sort of weird obsession with Dolenz or any of the other Monkees. Sure, we thought he was pretty groovy when we were 10. But as regular readers can attest, we're much more mature and far hipper these days. We can't help if the Oldies 103 continues to dedicate tunes like "Pleasant Valley Sunday" to us. And we didn't ask for The Monkees poster they sent us. Heck, Jay Phillips even tracked us down and gave us a copy of The Monkees' "Anthology" CD. Sounds like those guys are more obsessed with us than we are with Micky. However, you can bet there are those folks out there who are still a little wacky over The Monkees. Come on - you don't believe there's still interested in former teen idols? Music channel VHl is doing "Behind the Music" specials on former teenyboppper like Leif Garrett and the Bay City Rollers. (Ok, as embarrassing as it is, we'll admit that we watched parts of both specials.) Not that we're making fun of Leif Garrett or the Bay City Rollers. No sir, we don't want a backlash from their fans. We found that out about a month ago when we made a joking reference to another former teen idol, Bobby Sherman. All we wrote was that we had heard, on the heels of the Dolenz announcement, the 3 Rivers folks were trying to book Sherman, too (Ha, ha) Well, judging by the indignant responses we received, you would have thought we wrote something really controversial - that USC should change its fight song. Why would have believed there were that many Bobby Sherman fans still out there? Who would have thought not one of them would have the slightest sense of humor about it? Just check out this actual e-mail: "The 700 members of the Bobby Sherman fan club fall to see the humor in your comments and do not appreciate the unfair and unkind remark against Mr. Sherman." Or this one: "No more jokes about appearances by Bobby Sherman, please, because you'll have the 150 fans who follow him to every concert on your doorstep, asking for a reimbursement for AIRFARE for a bogus concert announcement." Or this one: "You can never get much bigger or wonderful of a celebrity than Bobby Sherman. He is the best, the cutest and the most talented guy out there." You get the drift. We certainly did. In fact, the newspaper had to hire extra security to get us to our car each night. Just the thought of roving bands of fortysomething women waiting for us in the parking lot so they could pummel us with rolled-up copies of old Tiger Beat magazines sent a chill down our spine. So let us say right here and now that we love Bobby Sherman. He is the best and the cutest. And his big hit "Julie, Do ya Love Me?" was far superior to anything Dylan, the Beatles and the Stones ever recorded. And we just love him in the show "Here Come The Brides." (In case your memory of the show has fades, Bobby was the cute one.) Furthermore, we can't begin to fully express our disappointment that he will not - repeat, will not - be making an appearance at the 3 Rivers Music Festival. Maybe they can book him next year. As long as we're in full apology mode, let us also say how sorry we are about any jokes we may have previously made about Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders or the Partridge Family. (Did we leave anyone out?) We'd truly love to see any of them come to a future 3 Rivers Music Festival. In the mean time, we'll just give a big Talk About Town salute to Micky Dolenz. Rock on, Mick. Play "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" for us. ********************** They have a really nice picture to go with the article as well. If anyone wants to see it, please let me know and I'll scan it for you. ~Claire~ It's Micky Dolenz! http://www.angelfire.com/nb/mickydolenz/inside.html Apr. 8-9, 3 Rivers Music Festival, Columbia, SC, 803-401-8990 or www.3riversmusicfestival.org The Monkees Alert list is moderated, meaning you cannot post directly to the list yourself. Monkee Business
Hey, hey, they're depicting the Monkees, and yesterday we got an exclusive peek on set
By CLAIRE BICKLEY -- Toronto Sun

TORONTO -- The Monkees are mixing it up.

Mike Nesmith is determined to do a concert to prove they're genuine musical talents. His cause is being backed by Peter Tork.

Not so by Davy Jones, who can only play tambourine anyway, or by Micky Dolenz, who thinks it sounds like a lot of work and doesn't get what the big deal is anyhow.

"It's not like Barbara Eden sleeps in her genie bottle every night," Micky points out.

It's a great line -- and a great example of the varied ambitions of the four '60s popsters/TV comedy stars back when they began.

For Nesmith and Tork, it was about the music. Jones and Dolenz were just satisfied to be stars, no matter how manufactured.

Which is something of an irony here on the Toronto set of Daydream Believers: The Monkees' Story, a $5-million movie to air this summer or fall on TMN-The Movie Network in Canada and VH1 in the U.S. It's being made here by the Pebblehut Productions wing of Montreal's Muse Entertainment.

After an open casting call that drew hundreds of hopefuls in New York, L.A. and Toronto, the headliners were hired: Torontonians Jeff Geddis and George Stanchev are playing Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones, L.A-based actor Aaron Lohr is Micky Dolenz and New Yorker L.B. Fisher is Peter Tork.

The two actors who are real-life musicians -- Stanchev and Lohr -- are playing the least musically talented Monkees, Jones and Dolenz.

Stanchev, who is only 19, plans to release a solo pop album this year. As Jones, his biggest musical strain has been a tambourine-induced blister. "I'll have a scar from that. Where's my stunt pay?" he jokes.

Lohr, 24, sang the voice of Goofy's son Max in A Goofy Movie, was in the musical feature Newsies and his R&B band has a deal with Epic Records.

Twenty-four-year-old Geddis, on the other hand, admits to playing nothing beyond rudimentary guitar chords, and says, "I wish nobody ever hears me singing."

Nevertheless, he understands the musically-gifted Nesmith's dilemma: "It was one of those things. On one hand they were being handed cheques for $250,000 after like their first couple shows and then on the other hand, he was like, 'I don't really feel like I'm being honest, I don't really feel like I'm being true to what I do,'" Geddis says. "So he goes out and buys a mansion. It was almost like gangster money to him, you know what I mean? He bought his wife a mansion. He bought himself a whole bunch of cars. He thought, 'Well, I didn't really earn this money so I might as well blow it. Like it was dirty money, kinda."

Non-naturally musical twenty-something Fisher got busted a bit by his New York roommate Jeanette Keim, who is the lead singer in the band Moxy.

"Well she did, because she wanted me to really play. If we had more time, she was going to teach me," Fisher says.

Because Rhino Records is a co-producer of the movie, all of the Monkees' real music will be used. Still, all four actors have been undergoing a crash course in instrument-handling since shooting began three weeks ago.

No one had to get it together faster than Lohr, who was cast on a Friday with shooting to start the following Monday. By Saturday, he was in Toronto taking drum lessons.

"I was a bit overwhelmed when I first got here. I thought, 'God, can I do this?'" he recalls. "Plus, dialogue and taking on his characteristics and his essence. But that weekend, I watched episode after episode. I watched a documentary, which was great. I watched the movie Head and listened to the songs over and over and over again. I took my sticks everywhere I went and was beating on things, beating on the couch, on the bed."

All four now have a feel for what it's like to be a pop idol. They shot two live concert sequences at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum, with hundreds of extras playing screaming fans.

"All of a sudden they announced, 'In their first live show ... THE MONKEES!' We went out on stage and the cheering went from one level to a completely different level," Stanchev describes. "The first song we broke into was I Want To Be Free, which Davy Jones sings, and there was a little number where I dance and go up to the crowd and I'm touching hands. Just seeing the looks on their faces, it felt real. Whether we're singing to a playback or not, we're performing. The more they fed off of us, the more we fed off of them."

Some extras hung around afterwards to get the actors' autographs and pass them their phone numbers. Just like the real thing.

One 13-year-old girl playing a shrieking fan was accompanied by her mother who, 35 years ago, really was a shrieking fan at a Monkee's gig, says Canadian director Neill Fearnley, 46.

"We've compressed a few things for time purposes, but we're telling it very, very close to what happened," he says. "Some of the historical things that people don't remember or don't know is that Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay for their movie Head. That Frank Zappa wanted Micky Dolenz to be the drummer of his band, Mothers of Invention. That Jimi Hendrix opened their tour."

The film, scripted by Ron McGee, is based on Harold Bronson's book, Hey, Hey, We're The Monkees.

Yesterday, an east-end studio replicated the beach house where the Monkees lived on their slapstick TV series. A lifesized toy giraffe stood in one corner. An oversized eye chart hung on the wall. A stuffed gorilla was upstairs, a jukebox sat beside the shabby chic art deco furniture and a male mannequin was relaxing at the kitchen table.

Costume designer Mary Partridge has amassed two trailers full of mid-'60s dress for the film's 50 speaking roles and 1,300 extras. There are three sets of clothes for the Monkees themselves: Street clothes, concert costumes and the goofball get-ups they wore on TV.

The latter reflect the grab-whatever, fast and furious way in which the old series was put together. Yesterday afternoon, for example, they were re-creating the Monkees episode Princess And A Peasant.

"You know, like Mike's blue jeans are tucked into his cowboy boots, which isn't exactly medieval footwear," Partridge points out. "Davy's watch is still on. They're wearing Indian beads that they got when they flew up with Stephen Stills when he was part of Buffalo Springfield to do a concert on a reservation."

There's one piece of wardrobe that actor Geddis is hoping to have as a special souvenir when the movie is done: One of Nesmith's tuques.

"Or the 'wool hat,' as the Americans say," he says. "We got interviewed by Entertainment Tonight and I said 'tuque' and they kind of looked at me like, 'What?' I said, 'Oh, wool hat for the Americans.'"

He laid rest to the reports and rumors that he was going to open his own Rock'n'Roll museum in Beavertown, PA, because the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland has "snubbed" the Monkees by not including them. Davy was in a cheerful mood, and told the show's hosts that the reports of him trying to "snub" the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame were absolutely *false*! He is renovating an old church in Beavertown that he purchased a long time ago, and he intends to place much of his Monkees memorabilia (gold records, photos, posters, etc) there for the fans to visit. He said he is doing this since the Monkees probably won't ever get into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame because the only people who "got it [about the Monkees] were the fans." One of the hosts agreed saying he has been a Monkees fan since the beginning. Davy also mentioned that he'd been contacted by the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame regarding being in their Teen Idols section. Waddell" VH1 Documentary 'Video Killed the Radio Star' Looks at the History of the Music Video Four-Hour Documentary Which Premieres May 8th Highlights the Performers, Producers and Directors Who Helped Shape Music Video into a Unique Art Form NEW YORK, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- It all began 25 years ago, when the marriage of two of modern culture's most expressive art forms -- music recording and filmmaking -- gave birth to the music video. Now, after an entire generation has grown up on music videos, they are still considered to be one of America's hottest forms of entertainment and a monitor of our society that shows us what is cool -- for better or worse. "Video Killed The Radio Star" is a fast-paced, four-part documentary that takes an in-depth look at the evolution of the music video, an art form that has become so powerful that it has changed the face of music, television, fashion, movies, advertising and even lifestyles. The first hour-long installment of "Video Killed the Radio Star," premieres on Monday, May 8 at 10:00 PM ET/PT and concludes on Thursday, May 11. "Video Killed the Radio Star" spotlights historic and significant video clips from Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, TLC, Janet Jackson, R.E.M., Marilyn Manson and hundreds more. The documentary also features exclusive interviews with the artists and directors themselves, who discuss their groundbreaking clips and tell the behind-the-scenes stories of some of the most influential and memorable videos of all time. Artists interviewed include Will Smith, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Sugar Ray, Moby, Robert Palmer, Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Adam Ant, David Byrne, Trevor Horne (The Buggles), Bob Casale, Laurie Anderson, Toni Basil and RuPaul, plus top video directors and industry heavyweights such as Bob Pittman, John Landis, Clive Davis, Michael Nesmith, David Mallett, Bob Giraldi, Tim Pope, Russell Mulcahy and Matthew Rolston. "Video Killed the Radio Star" dates the dawn of the modern music video to 1975, when the British TV show "Top of the Pops" introduced a film from Queen, who found that their new song, "Bohemian Rhapsody," would be impossible to re-create on stage. But the music video's spirit is a direct descendant of the original splicing of rock and film in movies like "Blackboard Jungle" and "Jailhouse Rock" from the '50s, as well as the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" and a proliferation of '60s television shows. "Some of them were great," notes David Byrne, "And some of them were kind of handmade." In 1981, MTV debuted on cable TV, changing the course of the music industry by beaming pop stars into the home 24 hours a day. At first, small production budgets spurred music video directors to create innovative and unconventional techniques. In the 1980s, recalls Adam Ant, "There were no rules, it hadn't really got too big yet." Later, when the sales power of the format became known to record executives, big budgets followed, allowing artists and filmmakers to experiment further with dazzling effects, animation and more. Fisher, who plays the updated Peter Tork in VH1's Monkees movie, Daydream Believer, has previously played some interesting roles: Mostly, he has played jerks. On the WB's Felicity, Fisher played Carl, the freshman who "got with" his dorm's resident adviser Meghan. On NBC's E.R., Fisher played a none-too-courtly punk who refused to give up his seat on a train to the pregnant nurse Carol Hathaway, only to depend on her ministrations when he was hit by a truck. "I actually lived," he recently told Jammusic.com, but "people were hoping I would die." And whose music do you think they play on the movie set? Daydream Believer director Neill Fearnley says that the ceaseless peppiness of Monkees music on the Toronto set drives him "to listen to Tom Waits to get to sleep at night." http://www.vh1.com/thewire/news/04_12_00/aerosmith.jhtml ~~ Lenora -- __ __ ( _\----/_ )---------------------------------------------..eeeee..--+ |\ _\ /_ / Lenora McCoy MacKenzie e8" 8 "8e| | \ _\/_ /_ _ AdmiralMick3y@yahoo.com d8 8 8b | |_____/_/ /| "I prefer to drink, not drive" 8! 8 !8 | ( (_)__)J-) ~John Entwistle~ 8! .dWb. !8 | ( /`., / Y8 .e* 8 *e. 8P | \/ ; / http://www.crosswinds.net/~admirallenora/ *8* 8 *8*| +---| === |dwb-------------------------------------------**ee8ee**--+ The Monkees Alert list is moderated, meaning you cannot post directly to the list yourself. Rolling Stone online has a story on the Monkee movie:

On the Set of the New Monkees Movie
Monkees to swing again in TV movie "Daydream Believers"
Here they come...again

It had snowed in Toronto just days earlier, forcing the beach volleyball scene in Daydream Believers: The Monkees' Story to be filmed on wrap day, April 14. The sun was out, but it was chilly. Still, the teenage extras had to sit for hours in bikinis on Lake Ontario's Sunnyside beach. For the discerning viewer, only their lily white skin betrayed the fact that this was not Los Angeles, September, 1966.

"Amazingly, Toronto has not only stood in for California, it's stood in for Manchester, London, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Hawaii," marvels the film's director Neill Fearnley (Escape From Mars, Dogmatic, Johnny 2.0), who is making the film on a budget of $3.4 million.

The cast -- Canadians George Stanchev (Davy Jones) and Jeff Geddis (Mike Nesmith), alongside Americans L.B. Fisher (Peter Tork) and Aaron Lohr (Micky Dolenz) -- are assembled on a blanket for the Beach Pavilion dialogue scene in which they discuss the craziness of the past year.

"The show's not even on the air yet and every teenager girl in America wants a piece of him," says "Mike" of Davy.

"Davy" complains about a girl who breaks into his dressing room. "I found her naked on my couch."

The made-for-TV movie is produced by Toronto's Pebblehut, a division of Montreal's Muse Entertainment Enterprises, which acquired the rights to the Monkees' music in 1999 from Rhino Records as well as to the Harold Bronson book, Hey Hey We're the Monkees, on which Ron McGee's screenplay is based. "The genesis is from that book," says Fearnley, "and then we've added other things."

Many viewers will be surprised to learn that Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees and Jack Nicholson wrote the band's psychedelic full-feature release Head. The cast also discovered some idiosyncrasies that personified the original actors.

Lohr (Newsies, Mighty Ducks 2 and 3) was given leeway by the director to improvise in the movie, such as wearing the baby's hat or putting toys in his mouth, because Micky was so playful. "I wanted to capture his essence, his charm and child-like qualities," Lohr explains.

Stanchev, who has his own pop album out on Bulgaria's Ka Music, had to master Davy's dance. "Everybody [on set] started comparing it to Axl Rose's little sway thing," he laughs.

Apparently Peter had a dual personality. "There was a difference between Peter Tork, the character, which was the dumb, fun-loving guy, and Peter Tork, the person, who was the serious musician, the intellect," says Fisher, whose acting credits include Felicity and ER. "He also smiles a lot and wore his belt buckle sideways, so it didn't scratch his guitar."

On a darker note, Geddis, who plays the first victim in Friday the 13th Part 10, due in October, reveals that there is a bit of blood shed in Daydream Believers. "I do one scene where I punch a hole in the wall and I've got a little bit of blood on my knuckles," he says.

The story follows the prefab Sixties pop group through the audition process for the TV show, its cancellation, the creation of the box office disaster Head, and, finally, the foursome's realization some months later that it had been a fun ride.

"So it ends on an up note," says Fearnley.

The film is scheduled to air in the summer of 2000 on VH1 in America, and on TMN/Superchannel in Canada.
