Monkees Re-Recording Hits For Teen-Pop Svengali

(2/1/01, 3 p.m. ET) - In a case akin to "life equaling art," the Monkees--rock 'n' roll's original made-for-TV band--are joining forces with Lou Pearlman, the Svengali behind teen-pop favorites such as the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, and the new TV-formed outfit O-Town.

The plan is for Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Peter Tork to re-record new versions of hits such as "I'm A Believer," "Daydream Believer," and "Last Train To Clarksville" for release this spring on Pearlman's Trans Continental label, according to a post on monkees.net <http://monkees.net>. There's no word on when the album will be out, but the trio plans to kick off a tour March 1 in Clearwater, Florida, and wrap on April 4 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The Monkees are also considering a summer amphitheater tour.

PETER TORK and JAMES LEE STANLEY Once Again (Beachwood Recordings)
Ex-Monkee Peter Tork and his musical partner, lifelong buddy James
Lee Stanley, have collaborated on a new CD, which made its national
debut this month at the World Folk Music Association benefit concert at
the Birchmere Music Hall. Mr. Tork was part of a two-day bill that
honored John Stewart, former member of the Kingston Trio, with a
lifetime achievement award.
The connection between Mr. Stewart, Mr. Tork and this CD is one
song, "Daydream Believer," a Stewart composition that scored a major hit
for the Monkees in the late 1960s. The two shared the stage with some
30 assorted folk artists to sing the song in a rousing encore at the end
of the first night of the Birchmere concert.
A pensive version of the song is perhaps the best track on "Once
Again," which features three Tork originals and five songs written or
co-written by Mr. Stanley. In addition to "Daydream Believer," two other
covers appear on the disc -- a swell version of Paul Simon's "One Trick
Pony," which arguably is the second best tune on the record -- and a
Fred Neil song, "Another Side to This Life."
This is a stripped-down, spare record that features the best this
duo has to offer in its second recording project -- good, California
harmonies at times reminiscent of the best studio efforts of Crosby,
Stills and Nash. The two voices and two guitars can be heard on every
track, and there is a little percussion on some of the songs. But the
music sounds very much like the fellows sound live and that's truly
refreshing and somewhat retro.
Mr. Tork's composition, "Easy Rider," opens the disc and it sounds
like a latter-day Monkees effort.
His most appealing song on the disc is "Hi Hi Babe," a
tongue-in-cheek kiss-off tune. Mr. Tork says in the song that after he
has put all of his lover's belongings in a box and changed the locks on
the door, when she returns and knocks, he'll greet her with a cheerful
"Hi, hi, hi, hi, babe, who was it you wanted to see?"
"Easy Rockin'" is probably the best of Mr. Stanley's songs on the
disc because of its flowing harmony.
Anyone who was, or is, a fan of the Monkees might want to check
out the work Mr. Tork has been up to lately. Those who expect to hear
his comedic, off-key singing, a la "Your Auntie Grizelda," will be in
for a pleasant surprise. -- Jay Votel

Hi all!

Here's more Atlantic City news: Ticket Master has posted the wrong
seating chart for The Monkees at the Xanadu Theatre in Atlantic City, on
March 16 & 17.  When I called the Taj Mahal Box Office, at (609) 449-5150,
I got this seating chart info:  Their Xanadu Theatre has just 1,300 seats
with only 3 Sections:  102 - 103 - 104 with Rows A-M, Left Section 102
seats with higher numbers (8 rows near row A, 18 rows in middle), are
closer to Center Section 103, in Right Section 104, lower numbers are
closer to the Center Section.  Tickets are $60- and $40- and went on sale
Saturday at noon thru Ticket Master.

Watch out for early Ticket Master website on-line sales a day or
even days before tickets are "available to the general public".  On the
tour date pages, the Ticket Master website features an extensive Monkees
Biography and a list of sale-priced CDs.  Accompanying Ticket Master
concert info is the phrase:  "Monkees Final Tour 2001".  Does anyone know
what that means?!  Please reply.   Thanks for all your news!

        Happy Touring,

Monkees Swing Back Into Action on the Road, in Studio
By Teri vanHorn

The Monkees are back in action with their first tour
in five years and a collaboration with a 21st-century
version of themselves.

The '60s hit-makers will head into a Florida studio
next week to record new versions of their hits
accompanied by up-and-comers Natural, the latest from
boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman, the man who helped
kick-start the careers of 'N Sync and the Backstreet
Boys.

The super-boy-band is expected to record three songs,
"Daydream Believer," "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone,"
and "Valleri," Natural's publicist said. Like the
Monkees, Natural play their own instruments.

The songs will be packaged along with live tracks to
be recorded during the Monkees' upcoming joint tour
with Natural on an album due later this year via
Pearlman's EMG label. The tour's Atlantic City, N.J.,
stops on March 16 and 17 will be filmed for a planned
concert video and DVD.

The Monkees will kick off the five-week trek on March
1 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fla., with
Natural opening the show. Dates run through a
seven-night stand at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Original members Davy Jones (vocals), Peter Tork
(bass), and Mickey Dolenz (drums) are aboard for the
tour and recording sessions; guitarist/songwriter
Michael Nesmith is sitting out.

"We are honored to be working with such legends of pop
history. The Monkees have served as a model and an
inspiration for all our Trans Continental artists,"
Pearlman, who runs the Trans Continental management
company and label, said in a statement.

Rhino will release the four-CD boxed set The Monkees
Music Box on February 13. The set will include some
previously unreleased alternate versions of Monkees
tunes.

The Monkees last reunited for a tour in 1996. The
group members continue to tour solo between reunion
treks.

Every Saturday, the (London) TImes arts supplement 'Play' has a feature
called 'The Vulture', that 'picks over the bones of reissued classics'. Each
week features a CD, a book and a video. The issue for 3 February features
the reissued Mike Nesmith albums 'And The Hits Just Keep On Comin' (1972)
and 'Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash' (1973). Here is the review...

Reissued by Camden, 2000

News that Michael Nesmith is currently attempting to sort out the world's
problems by inviting leading intellectuals to appear at his grandly named
Council of Ideas brains trust in New Mexico may perplex former fans of the
Monkees. Back in the Sixties, he played the woolly hatted straight man in
that zany group.

However, those familiar with his Seventies solo work will not be surprised
by his intellectual pursuits. The recently reissued 'And The Hits Just Keep
On Comin' was one of the most literate records of the decade, a stark
appraisal of post-Monkees' fame. In tackling his blighted love life, Nesmith
approached doomed relationships with the philosophical detachment of John
Stuart Mill. This important work was followed by the less cerebral 'Pretty
Much Your Standard Ranch Stash', which featured a full country ensemble and
included Nesmith favourites, such as 'Some of Shelly's Blues' and 'Winonah'.
Currently available as a bargain two-for-one package, these albums attest to
Nesmith's importance in bridging country, pop and rock.....

Elsewhere in the Times (same day) is an article about current TV series
'Popstars'. A TV company has auditioned hundreds of young hopefuls to put
together a pop band - sound familiar, Monkees fans? Each programme has seen
unsuccessful applicants jettisoned from the project as they gradually
whittle down to the final 5 for the mixed group. The TV company are under
pressure, though, accused of promoting the first release by 'Inner-Spin' in
breach of advertising rules. "We have been monitoring the series, but we
cannot judge what they do until we see what happens, once the band is
formed" said a spokesman. "However, it has to be remembered that products
created by a show's format are a special case (for avoiding advertising
rules)" he added, "in the Sixties the Monkees did what 'Popstars' is doing
now"

Hello Everyone,
I see in the Chicago Tribune that tickets are onsale now for the
Merrillville, IN Monkees concert on March 25.  I found it surprising
that the concert is at 4pm.  It is a Sunday afternoon.  The ad had a
picture of all four Monkees from the 60s but where Mike would be
was a big Monkees logo and the words "The final Monkees 2001
tour" so you can only see the touring Monkees.

Hi Brad - my sister subscribes to the Monkeelist and our whole family loves it.

(ed: thanks!)

I recently saw a review of the tribute to John Stewart in a national University paper, it was reprinted from Atlanta, Georgia. The reviewer gave a lot of attention to Peter Tork and James Lee Stanley.

The article was called "Musical Tribute to John Stewart Shines" and it was written by Therra Cathryn Gwyn. It is mentioned in the second paragraph that John Stewart wrote one of the Monkees biggest hits and further in the article it reads:

"...Then Peter Tork ( formerly of the Monkees, presently involved with several musical projects including a jump-blues band called Shoe Suede Blues) and James Lee Stanley (actor, singer and former regular on "Star Trek, Deep Star Nine") took the stage and it was obvious this was the act some people had come to see. Tork and Stanley, class "A" musicians both, opened their set with some microphone difficulties and and a poke at Tork's former Monkee-mate and mega-successful businessman, Mike Nesmith.

"We'll just put a wool hat on it" said Tork, pointing to the unused mic situated between him and Stanley, "In memory of a man who used to play music."

Once past their sound problems, Tork and Stanley treated the sold-out crowd to original tunes by each of them ( "Easy Rider" and "All I Ever Wanted") and a dandy sing-along version of Stewart's "Daydream Believer". Their sharp harmonies and sense of humor were a big hit with the audience and revved the evening toward it's finale. Their set was followed by Roseanne Cash and then Nanci Griffith."

Thank you.

MONKEE BUSINESS

Former TV rock star Micky Dolenz just wrapped up directing another New Orleans movie with his old friend, producer and native New Orleanian Al Salzer. For them, working in town is a labor of both love and money.
01/30/01

By Chris Rose

Staff writer/The Times-Picayune

There's a story that New Orleans film producer Al Salzer neither confirms nor denies, but it has to do with his theory on financing a motion picture.

Salzer, so the story goes, likes to take a script that has New York listed as the location of the narrative and he says to the money men: "You want to save a million dollars? Watch this." And he crosses out "New York" and inserts "New Orleans."

Salzer just smiles when I recount this story to him, but the run he's on now hardly contradicts it.
Last week, Salzer -- a bi-coastal movie man who lives on a boat outside of L.A. and in a Lake Pontchartrain boathouse while here in town -- wrapped a local $1 million picture called "Contempt." Directed by former Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz, it stars Stephanie Zimbalist, Marcus Flanaghan and former "90210" hottie Gabrielle Carteris.

That movie wrapped Saturday and the cast and crew hit Mid-City Lanes that night for a wrap party in the company of the Iguanas and zydeco princess Rosie Ledet. But, for Salzer, the work was just beginning.

This week -- Thursday most likely -- he'll open location on another New Orleans flick in the $1 million range, this one a mystical drama called "Above and Beyond," starring Adam Baldwin, one of the massive brood of hunky Baldwin brothers.

That film wraps right before Mardi Gras. Right after Mardi Gras, Salzer opens a third film on location here and follows that with a fourth and final picture -- directed by Dolenz again -- shooting in the weeks prior to Jazzfest.

It's all low-budget fare, stuff that may end up in theatrical release, or may wind up on the USA network or TNT or something like that. Either way, Salzer says he makes his nut overseas.

"We'll do well with foreign distribution," says Salzer, who heads up Crescent City Productions. "New Orleans is a favorite with foreign distributors. They love pictures from New Orleans. The scenery is great here. Maybe it reminds them of Europe.

"You can adapt just about any script," he says in reference to the aforementioned script-doctoring anecdote. "If it's a mountain story, maybe not. If it's about the blue waters of the Caribbean, no. But just about anything else. This film, 'Contempt,' was originally set in Philadelphia. So, where it says 'Philly cheese steak,' you cross it out and write 'oyster po-boy,' and we're off to the races.

"And besides that, I like bringing movies here because I can visit my mother and eat."

To that end, Salzer -- De La Salle class of '61 and Tulane theater major -- has brought more than two dozen films to his hometown over the past 30 years, as well as a bundle of commercials and the ill-fated but always colorful "Big Easy" TV series on the USA network.

It was while producing a film here in 1971 that Salzer first met Dolenz. The flick was called "Keep Off My Grass" and you probably won't find it at Blockbuster, but it made lifelong friends of the two.

Back then, Dolenz was acting on the heels of his chaotic international success with the Monkees TV show and traveling band. He soon went into directing, and has amassed a portfolio of dozens of movies, television shows, commercials and music videos -- most all of them filmed during a long tenure living in England.

Now Stateside again, he is teaming up with Salzer to add more directing credits to his resume. While relatively mum about the plotline of "Contempt," Dolenz allows that it is "a psychological thriller/murder mystery, with a love triangle." They made the movie in 17 days.

"That was brutal but necessary," he says. "You know that old saying: You can't have it fast, cheap and good? Well, watch." (Aside, he notes that the bi-annual reunion tours with the Monkees -- one of which is in the works for this spring -- are a piece of cake compared to the blistering pace and pressure of movie-making.)

The recent shooting frenzy brought the cast and crew to a Mid-City home, a downtown law firm (there's a malpractice case afoot in "Contempt"), the Algiers Courthouse, Audubon Park and the Moonwalk. The final night of filming took place at the state adolescent hospital campus off Tchoupitoulas Street Uptown, where police cars and a rented chopper provided the backdrop for a climactic arrest scene after Carteris' character has gunned down a few people.

The arresting officer in that scene, amazingly, is longtime Westwego city alderman Ted Munch, who, it turns out, is one of many local closet thespians Salzer turns to when filming in town.

In fact, other than Zimbalist, Carteris and Flanaghan, the rest of the ensemble cast was drawn entirely from the New Orleans, Baton Rouge and southern Mississippi regions.

Other locals in "Contempt" include funnyman John McConnell, Michael Arata, Adriana Bate, Ron Flagge, Linda Mintz and Barrett O'Brien.

Dolenz, for one, was impressed with the local talent.

"It is a wonderful local supporting cast," he says. "They made my job so much easier; they were so professional. I'm going: Why aren't you people doing this in Los Angeles? And then I went down to Brennan's and ate dinner and now I know why they're not in L.A."

(2/6/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- Smash Mouth will be covering the Neil Diamond
classic, "I'm A Believer," for the upcoming DreamWorks animated flick,
Shrek. The song will appear in the movie and on the accompanying soundtrack.
"I'm A Believer" is perhaps best known as one of several hits for '60s pop

(smashmouth.com).

Meanwhile, Smash Mouth is scheduled to return to Los Angeles this week to

Ashley +++++++++++++++++++++ Monkee Business Fanzine Monkees News Update updated February 12, 2001 Although the Monkees continue to plan their solo tour schedules, they will definitely be joining forces for a short tour March 1 through April 6. The dates are listed below---some are confirmed, some are still being confirmed and could change, and there's still room for further additions. For updates, check here or David Fishof's official tour website, www.monkees2001.com, or www.pollstar.com. The reunion tour is being handled by David Fishof, who produced the guys' 1986 tour. Fishof recently became Davy Jones' personal manager and wants to steer Davy's career back toward the stage and the musical theater---he also envisions the Monkees' tour leading up to a stint on Broadway. Davy, Micky, and Peter did a photo shoot recently for an upcoming issue of "Vanity Fair" magazine (David Fishof tells us it will be the April issue), and their upcoming reunion has already been profiled on "Entertainment Tonight". March 1, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, FL, 727-791-7400 March 2, House of Blues, Orlando, FL, 407-934-2583 March 3, Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, Pompano Beach, FL, 954-946-2402 March 4, Florida Theatre, Jacksonville, FL, 904-355-2787 March 6, Center Stage Theatre, Atlanta, GA, 404-885-1365 March 8, State Theatre, Easton, PA, 610-252-3132 March 9, Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Lowell, MA, 978-454-2299 March 10, Oakdale Theatre, Wallingford, CT, 203-265-1501 March 11, Westbury Music Fair, Westbury, NY, 516-334-0800 March 14, The 9:30 Club, Washington, DC, 202-265-0930 March 15, Kahuna Pavilion, Wilmington, DE, 302-571-8401 March 16-17, Xanadu Theatre, Trump Taj Mahal Casino/Hotel, Atlantic City, NJ, 609-449-5150 March 18, Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, CT, 888-226-7711 March 21, Turning Stone Casino, Verona, NY, 877-833-SHOW March 22, Palace Theatre, Columbus, OH, 614-469-9850 March 24, Sam's Town Casino/Hotel, Tunica, MS, 800-456-0711 March 25, Star Plaza Theater, Merrillville, IN, 219-769-6600 March 29-April 4, Hollywood Theatre, MGM Grand Casino, Las Vegas, NV, 800-929-1111 April 5, Kiva Auditorium, Albuquerque Convention Center, Albuquerque, NM, 505-768-4575 April 6, Celebrity Theatre, Phoeniz, AZ, 602-267-1600 The Monkees traveled to Orlando, FL, in early February, to record new versions of three Monkees classics, "Valleri", "Steppin' Stone", and "Daydream Believer". The three tracks will appear on the live album generated by the tour, and hopefully, Fishof says, one of the new recordings will go to radio as a single in early March. The recording was done at music mogul Lou Pearlman's studios--- his latest proteges, Natural, described in "Pollstar" as "a boy band that plays instruments", provided background vocals on the three tracks and will open for the Monkees on their March and April tour dates. The tour is also expected to generate a live concert TV special and DVD. PETER TORK ---------- Peter's Shoe Suede Blues tour dates scheduled for the East Coast for December, January, and March were cancelled to allow Peter more time to prepare for the upcoming Monkees reunion tour. WMGK expects Micky to make an on-air visit on their morning show on Feb. 14---local listeners can tune in at 102.9 FM, elsewhere you can listen on the web at www.wmgk.com. And he's just about confirmed for ABC-6's "Philly After Midnight", airing Tuesday late night at 12:35 am. Micky has several irons in the fire this year professionally---he directed a movie in January and will direct another in April---but he will still find time to tour with the Monkees, with the Teen Idols (Micky, Bobby Sherman, and Peter Noone), and in his own solo rock'n'roll show of Monkes hits and rock'n'roll classics, backed by his band and his sister Coco on vocals. This story will be published this week in the Tampa Bay area in the free community newspaper "In the Loop." Thanks again to everyone who helped The Original Boy Band - The Monkees Are Back Again By Amy Roundtree Here they come again. Before the members of the Backstreet Boys or N’SYNC were even born, American teenagers grooved to the beat of the original boy band, The Monkees. The Monkees 2001 Tour kicks off right over the bridge in Clearwater on March 1 at Ruth Eckerd Hall and the golden oldie favorite group is back with a new sound orchestrated by current pop maestro Lou Pearlman. Three of the original Monkees, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork have gotten back together for the fifth time since 1969 and will be touring the US from March 1 through April 6. Don’t think this is the last time you’ll hear about the pre-fab four, this reunion tour is planned to take the group to Broadway, according to tour promoter David Fishof. Davy Jones, still the cuddly cute teen heartthrob of the group, verified those plans. "I look forward to a Broadway show," said Jones, who insists that he’s the only good-looking guy from the 60s. "Roy Davies [from The Kinks] says he has the best looking butt, but he hasn’t seen mine. I don’t look all jowly and old like the other guys from the 60s. The important thing is that when the Monkees get on stage, we have a good time, and we know that the audience is having a great time. We develop improvisations and little skits that will eventually become a show, and we will take that as far as it goes. Hopefully, the fans will be seeing us on Broadway in the next couple of years. Our onstage show is different from other musical acts, though. There’s dialogue and it’s a whole theatrical event just because we’re there. We’re unique, not like a lot of bands that just get on stage and sing the hits and that’s all folks. We really have a good time together as a group on stage and I’m very confident standing next to two guys I know I can rely on." Jones also said that working with Lou Pearlman in Orlando was like reliving the first days of the Monkees phenomenon. "He’s developed so many new talents, and Pearlman brings together the most talented artists and producers, it’s like when the Monkees first started and we had the best songwriters and studio musicians working together." On the upcoming tour, the Monkees will record a live performance in Atlantic City that will be released as a cd that will include the recently remixed classics "Daydream Believer," "Valleri," and "I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone." At this point, everyone knows that the Monkees did not play the instruments on the group’s first two albums, but Jones says that was just how records were made in those days. "Everyone had studio musicians, the Beach Boys, the Animals, the Association, the Turtles, —they all worked with different musicians to develop their sound. We were only different because we had our own television show each week. Years before they developed music video television, we taped our own music video each week and it was broadcast on national television." In the past three years, the Monkees have been the subject of two television specials, an E! True Hollywood Story, and the VH1 double whammy the movie, "Daydream Believer," and Behind the Music. In 1999, long-time holdout Michael Nesmith (remember the guy with the sideburns and omnipresent green wool hat) reunited in 1999 for the aforementioned specials and a few concert dates in England, as well as a new cd "Justus," which was performed, written and produced by all four Monkees. Despite the tell-all television features and intimate biographies about Jones, Dolenz and Nesmith, there are still a few things that the general public does not know about the Monkees. For instance, you might know that the singles "Last Train to Clarksville", "I’m a Believer" and "Daydream Believer" reached number one in the US, but did you know that from 1966-1968 records by The Monkees outsold the Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined? Or did you realize that when the Monkees reunited for the group’s 20th anniversary in 1986, their original seven albums hit the Top 40 charts again, a feat only matched by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. But don’t think that our favorite fifty-something fellows have been twiddling their thumbs between Top 40 hits, they each have developed their own highly successful solo careers. Of course, this is the new millennium and all four Monkees oversee individual websites that offer personal information about the guys as well as a listing of tour dates and merchandise. There are also numerous fan-based sites that keep updated listings of the Monkees whereabouts and current projects. Michael Nesmith, who has been credited with helping conceive the idea of Music Television, stays active with the Gihon Foundation and its bi-annual think tank known as the Council on Ideas, which was established by his mother, Bette Graham, who also invented Liquid Paper. Nesmith heads Pacific Arts, a video distribution company that was awarded $47 million in a 1999 lawsuit against PBS. Old Wool-hat is also an author, his first novel, "The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora" was released in 1998 and he is actively working on movie scripts and a second novel. As for the short English one, Davy Jones has recently completed the second edition of his autobiography, Davy Jones: Daydream Believin', which updates his life and career to the present. Jones has actively toured the world performing in live concerts and Broadway revival performances over the years, and he has continued following his first passion: horses. On February 1, 1996, Davy won his first face under rules in England, riding his ace horse, Digpast. Crazy curly-haired drummer Micky Dolenz has participated in nearly every aspect of visual arts in the past 30 years. As an actor, director, producer, musician, cartoon voice-over talent, painter and author in the United States and in England, Dolenz has easily kept himself occupied. This year alone, Dolenz directed a movie in January and will direct another in April, but he will still find time to tour with the Monkees, with the Teen Idols, and in his own solo show of Monkees hits and rock and roll classics. Folkie-favorite Peter Tork has maintained a prosperous solo musical career throughout the years. Tork has been touring recently with long-time creative partner James Lee Stanley and also with his band, Shoe Suede Blues. His recently released solo album, Stranger Things Have Happened, has been noted in several national and international media. You may ask, what keeps the big red Monkeemobile rolling along the highway? That’s easy, they have legions of fans, three generations of Monkee maniacs who are anxiously awaiting every new project, such as the recently released 3-cd set "The Headquarters Sessions," and the upcoming "Monkees Music Box" 4-cd box set. One way that Monkees fans keep in contact is through the Official Monkees website at www.monkees.net , which supports the Monkees Alert Mailing List. More than 3,000 fans worldwide receive the group e-mail containing the latest news about each of the Monkees. Of course, several fans get the opportunity to meet each other on internet message boards, like Susan Taylor, who flew to London with two cyberpals to see their favorite Monkee Mike Nesmith onstage. The Tampa Bay area and Central Florida in general really is swarming with Monkees fans of all ages and descriptions, but the phenomenon is anything but local. For instance, take Jennifer Lee from Orlando, she got turned on to the Monkees during 1986 when the series ran on MTV and Nickelodeon. Deborah Estes also became a fan during the second wave of Monkeemania, and like most die-hard followers, she has gotten to meet two of the Monkees, Micky and Davy have both had solo appearances in the area in the past year. But several fans have traveled far and wide to see their favorite Monkee in person. Debbie Elmore from Glendora, California, has been a fan since the beginning, and she has gone to see Peter and his new band, Shoe Suede Blues, several times. She also spent several hours one evening talking to Peter’s girlfriend and taking photos for friends. Another fan, Laurie Henry, met her husband while attending one of Peter’s solo concerts in Clearwater in 1982. First-generation fan Judy Anghelescu and long-time local Monkee-lover Jana Horne have both traversed the Atlantic to see the Monkees onstage. Combined, the pair has probably seen more than 20 Monkees concerts. And like many other fans who have gotten to personally meet the Monkees, Anghelescu remembers their gracious attitude toward their fans. When she met Davy after a concert in Mississippi, Anghelescu mentioned that she was almost out of gas. "He was so concerned, digging in his pockets to give me money, so worried I would not make it home," she said. "Assuring him that I would be all right, when he walked me to the door, he made me promise to come back if I didn't think I would make it." Some fans devote a lot of time to their favorite band, like Jan Chilton of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who has followed Davy Jones’ career for more than 30 years. She also runs a website in his honor. Alicia Castellano, an Ybor City resident, goes to see Davy whenever she can. "I saw him for the first time on Dec. 5th, 1998," she remembers. "And I only asked him for autographs and he asked me for my name, and address. I was so freaked out, he made my dream even better because when we went inside for the concert, he mentioned my name about four or five times on stage and dedicated "I'll love you forever" to me. I started crying tears of happiness." Davy Jones remembers Alicia Castellano, too. "Everybody’s important to me," said Jones. "Fans like Alicia are what keep the Monkees going. She’s a mega-fan and her support has meant an awful lot to me." Like Chilton and Castellano, most fans shower their affections on one Monkee in particular. Most fans cite Micky as their favorite Monkee, and most who do say it’s because of his singing talents. One fan wrote, "His voice is just out of this world." Shari Bond adds, "I love them all, but Micky's sense of humor and dreamy, romantic voice have always done it for me." The current wave of Monkeemania has brought along another generation of fans. For instance, 14-year-old Jennifer Gagen carries her Monkees lunchbox to school every day. And when Mary Lewis and her sister thought that the 1997 Monkees tour would be the group’s last, they drive to Virginia to catch the next concert. Since then, she’s been able to see them onstage more than 16 times in six states. Once more, Lewis will be among the thousands of fans who see the Monkees on tour this year in what is being billed locally as the group’s final tour. "There will be no final tour for the Monkees," said Davy Jones. "People still see the show every day; they still hear the songs on the radio. The Monkees can’t stop going on together. The public won’t allow it." This was written by the current acting Editor of Muse and well known music journalist Leagues O'Toole, and went live last Friday and will always be accessible via our archive It'd be great if you could add this review to your links section - http://www.monkees.net/ The URL for the review is http://www.muse.ie/160201/reviews/revu_monkees.html or our main URL is http://www.muse.ie/ Let me know if that'd be ok with you All the best Jo The Monkees - The Definitive Monkees (WEA) For a manufactured pop band featuring three American goofballs and a failed English jockey, the Monkees left quite a legacy. Detached from its cartoonish cult TV show, the early Monkees sound was a direct hit blend of the groovy Greenwich Village folk'n'roll scene and the pure boys-with-guitars bubblegum pop zest of early Beatles. But the less-fab four's future would find them readdress what was initially a designer interest in psychedelic music. As "The Definitive Monkees" testifies, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz would evolve from the merely zany to the positively weird. Perhaps driven by the accusations that they were mere celebrity dummies who employed session musicians on their records, The Monkees excelled in the songwriting stakes, particularly Mike Nesmith (who later forged a reputation as a strong country tunesmith). Peter Tork's ace "For Pete's Sake", which replaced "The Monkees Theme" on the closing credits of the TV show, is one many highlights from their 1967 third album, "Headquarters". Dolenz also did himself proud with the inappropriately titled "Randy Scouse Git" inspired by a swinging London party (he apparently didn't know what "git" meant!). A bonus CD of studio outtakes reveals much of the generally unspoken Monkees experiments that didn't quite figure in their pop personas. A band stifled creatively by the people that dictated their career, The Monkees were ensconced in a bizarre parallel world. You'll also find some of the truly awful artefacts ("That Was Then, This Is Now" and "Heart And Soul") from their reincarnation in the Eighties, with Dolenz commandeering vocals. But in retrospect and even considering a large percentage of the hits penned were by other songwriters The Monkees produced smashing, succinct, feelgood pop records. - Leagues O'Toole ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: Sara Hi everyone! DAVY! Here he comes
By Jan Tuckwood, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Saturday, February 24, 2001
Be still, my 44-year-old heart! Finally, after 32 years, I get to fulfill a fantasy that has lingered longer than the scent of my old Yardley English Lavender cologne:
I get to talk to Davy Jones.
Yes, that Davy Jones. The Monkee. The face that prompted a million preteens to pucker up and kiss their pillows, their posters and their TV sets.
If you want to see an otherwise self-possessed middle-aged woman go from 44 to 12 in zero seconds, just hand her Davy's phone number.
Instantly, I revert to the dork-dom of my youth. It's Valentine's Day, too. How perfect. I get to talk to Davy on Valentine's Day, and he has a 561 area code -- he might even be close enough to touch.
Davy answers the phone with that chipper English accent: "Hello!"
Not quite "Hello, luv!" but that's OK.
Before I can spit out, "Davy, please describe your dream date," I ask an even more pressing question: Where are you?
Turns out, Davy's been daydream believin' around these parts for quite a few winters now.
"I'm in Indiantown, working with my horses," he says. "I'm staying out here at a mobile home park so I can be close to them."
Davy. In a trailer. In Indiantown. This isn't exactly my fantasy, but I'm still a believer.
And Davy goes on . . .
"I've got a beautiful home in Pennsylvania, 25 rooms filled with antiques, but I don't want to get cold anymore, and I love Florida so much . . . Every January, February and March, I bring down the horses. I used to go to Payson Park outside Stuart, but for the past couple years, I've been at a private farm out here. I've got four of my horses here . . . thoroughbreds we're training for the racing season . . . I could lease a residence in Stuart and be 35 minutes from my horses, or I could stay here and be five minutes away . . . so here I am."
At 55, Davy Jones is still famously adorable and famously short -- 5-feet-4 -- but exceptionally long on personality.
He jokes. He sings. He banters. Ask him a question -- even a geeky question like, "What type of sheets do you sleep on?" (right now, his sheets are made of T-shirt fabric, white with a blue stripe, but he prefers plain white cotton) -- and he turns on the charm.
Give him an audience, and he entertains.
"I don't care if it's for 10 people or 10,000 people," he says. "I'll give a performance anywhere, even the post office."
Especially if he's in Indiantown, where his picture happens to hang on the post office wall -- and not because he's a fugitive, though he's been on many a gal's most-wanted list for quite some time.
In Indiantown, he just happens to be a somebody in the middle of nowhere.
"I go into the Good Times Cafe, and sure enough, someone says, `Aren't you Davy Jones? What are you doing here?' And I say, `What are you doing here? I'm just having breakfast like all the other cowboys.' "
A double life
Now, before we talk about the Monkees' current tour, which is why Davy Jones is so happy to answer questions, let's get some important personal things out of the way: He's available. He just ended a four-year relationship in December ("It's a bit of a heartache to me, but I'll get through it"). He remains friendly with his two ex-wives ("the best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother"). He loves his four daughters, ages 12 to 32, madly. He's not a granddad yet, but he expects (married) daughter No. 2, Sarah, will change that.
Davy's "a regular guy," says the man who owns the stables where Davy and an old friend from England, Dave Smither, train their horses. He doesn't want his name used, in order to protect Davy's privacy. "He's not stuck up at all."
Just a normal guy, Davy admits, "with a double life."
There's his real life, up at the crack of dawn to talk to his kids in England and then ride his horses. And then there's his road life, out on stage with the Monkees.
This week, he heads out for the road life -- a six-week tour with Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork that begins Thursday in Clearwater and stops in Pompano Beach next Saturday. Mike Nesmith, the fourth Monkee, is sitting out this tour and the flood of publicity that's coming with it.
Once again, believe it or not, the Monkees are hot.
The prefab four, whose TV show lasted just two seasons -- 1966 to '68 -- but spawned dozens of hit songs, are no longer the "young generation," but fans still think they've got something to say. This 35th anniversary tour will lure grandmothers, moms and their teenage daughters, who catch reruns of the old TV shows on Nickelodeon.
"This is not a final tour," Davy says. "You can't close the Monkees down. The Monkees will exist until the end of the world."
And he's right: Rhino Records just released a four-CD set, The Monkees Music Box, of the band's greatest hits, plus another CD set about the making of the Monkees' album Headquarters. In early February, Davy, Micky and Peter were in the studio to record new versions of three Monkees classics, Valleri, (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone and Daydream Believer. They'll be featured in the April issue of Vanity Fair magazine. And there's serious talk about a Broadway show.
No Mike, no matter. Davy's still the teen-idol ticket.
"I'm the only good-looking aging rock star left from the '60s," he quips.
His dark hair is sprinkled with gray now, but he's got the body and spirit of a 25-year-old, and the ladies still shout out "nice butt!" when he wears leather pants.
And you think 13-year-old girls can scream? Wait a few decades. After years of yelling at children and husbands, middle-aged mommas can bellow like nobody's business. When Davy sings, "Girl, look what you've done to me . . ." they're shrieking like hyenas in heat.
How does this make the object of their desire feel?
He never takes their endless love lightly: "It's a responsibility . . . The Monkees is not just a TV show, not just a touring act. We're responsible ambassadors of the youth of the mid-'60s."
After all these years, he says, it's the fans who impress him. "They're good, strong people. I feel safe around them."
Even when they want to rip his clothes off.
And, yes, they still do. And, yes, the depth of fan passion still amazes Davy.
A few weeks ago, he was chatting with Orlando music mogul Lou Pearlman, who developed 'N Sync, the Backstreet Boys and Natural, a boy band that's opening for the Monkees.
"So, I'm talking to Lou about these kids, Natural, and the incredible phenomenon that was the Monkees, that is 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, and I say to him, `Lou, when will all this end?'
"And Lou says, `When they stop making little girls.' "
Davy's Valentines
Little girls grow up, of course, forever linking the music of their youth to their happiest, most innocent memories.
For the next six weeks, they'll scream for Davy, Peter and Micky, then the "boys" will get back on the bus, go to the next stop, and try not to feel like roadies at their advanced age.
Davy's taking his pal Dave Smither along, so he'll have a piece of his real life with him "and somebody to talk to."
Back in Indiantown, their routine is simple: Horses, a phone interview or two, horses, a couple of poached eggs at Good Times Cafe, horses, maybe a meal at the Seminole Inn or a drive over to Hobe Sound beach or to Stuart, where Davy hangs out at his favorite pub, the Jolly Sailor.
It's an ideal life for a celebrity who once wanted to be a jockey.
"If you can't train a racehorse here," he cracks, "you might as well buy a boat."
Back in Indiantown, tired from the track, Davy goes to bed by 9 p.m. and thinks about regular-guy stuff: Work. And women.
He wants to expand his solo career, maybe make a movie. "I'm never satisfied," he says, "I'm always looking for more."
Ask him the classic 16 Magazine question -- describe your dream date -- and he doesn't hesitate, as though he's answered this one at least a thousand times before:
"Somebody with a sense of humor . . . somebody who knows how to laugh and let go . . . someone who enjoys the outdoors, tennis, maybe horseback riding . . . going to the movies and dinners with no more than four people, because too many people, and you can't converse . . . she could be tall or short, fat or thin . . .
"I like the romance of foreplay," he continues, then pauses. "And my life is basically like that, in a sense, though I've never said that before . . . with all of the little attractions that come my way through my celebrity, I haven't lost the touch of normality."
So, considering all those little attractions, who's his Valentine this year?
"Only my four daughters," he replies, sounding very much like a regular guy.
Now that I'm an older-and-wiser fan, I understand:
Sometimes even Davy Jones has no one to kiss but his pillow.

The World's Largest and Longest Drum Roll Heralds Grand Opening of Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando
2001 Drummers Pound Out a Guinness Record-Setting Welcome for New Hard Rock Hotel
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- 2001 drummers from around the world gathered in Orlando today to set a Guinness record for the longest and largest drum roll in history during the grand opening of the new Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando.
Led by famed Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz, the group represented the largest collection of drummers ever assembled -- including 81-year-old ``Fast Eddie'' Soistman from Winter Park, Florida and 8-year-old Christopher Ulrich, from Oveido, Florida, the oldest and youngest drummers at the event. Other drummers representing locations as far away as Australia, Austria and India had registered to take part.
The drummers drummed for three minutes using a collection of instruments that included 1,921 snare drums, 50 bass drums, seven toms, seven tenors, six bongos, five quads, four African hand drums and one Conga drum. The resulting noise was so loud it exceeded decibel levels beyond the loudest of rock concerts, requiring event participants to wear ear protection.
Universal Orlando sponsored the event to mark the grand opening of its on-site Hard Rock Hotel, which designers created as a tribute to rock and roll. The new hotel features the world's most valuable collection of rock memorabilia, original paintings by famed rock stars and a state-of-the-art stereo sound system so extensive there are even underwater speakers in the hotel pool.
The Hard Rock joins another on-site Loews-managed property, The Portofino Bay Hotel, to create the hospitality hub of Universal Orlando, which includes the Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure theme parks and the CityWalk entertainment complex.
``Creating and building Universal Orlando has been as thrilling as any ride or attraction we have developed along the way,'' said Felix Mussenden, president and chief operating officer of Universal Orlando. ``The on-site hotels are an important component in making Universal Orlando a world-class resort destination. The exemplary hospitality and unique style of the Hard Rock Hotel and the Portofino Bay Hotel, both Loews-managed properties, is a perfect match for the unparalleled entertainment experiences offered by the Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure theme parks.''
Located on a 14-acre site, the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando features 650 thematically appointed rooms, including suites and Kid's Suites; several cocktail venues -- the Lobby Lounge, elegant Velvet Bar and the poolside Hard Rock Beach Club; two restaurants -- The Sunset Grill (featuring an open exhibition kitchen) and an Orlando version of the world-famous Palm Restaurant; a massive zero-entry pool with a 260-foot water slide and 12-speaker underwater sound system; adjacent ``Little Rock'' pool for youngsters; fitness center and business center and 6,000 square feet of meeting space
The on-site hotels at Universal Orlando are connected to each other and to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk by a chain of scenic waterways and are literally within walking distance of each other and the theme parks. In addition to more traditional forms of transportation, guests board water-taxis from their hotel to their Universal destinations and back again.
The Universal Orlando resort destination (www.universalorlando.com) includes two dramatically distinct adjacent theme parks, the Universal Studios motion picture and television theme park and Islands of Adventure, Orlando's next generation theme park. Universal Orlando also includes CityWalk, a 30- acre dining, shopping, club and live-entertainment venue as well as premier on-site Loews hotels and world-class film and television production facilities.
Universal Orlando (www.universalorlando.com) is a unit of Universal Studios, a part of CANAL+, the TV and Film division of Vivendi Universal, a new global leader in media and communications.

The Palm Beach Post

The Palm Beach Post

Sometimes even Davy Jones has no one to kiss but his pillow.

monkees - The World's Largest and Longest Drum Roll Heralds Grand Opening of Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando
