happy new year to monkees fans everywhere.

a tv programme shown here last week celebrated '40 Years of Coronation Street' and
featured a very brief clip of Davy playing Colin Lomax in 1961. He was shown
talking to actress Violet Carson, who played Ena Sharples, in a brief (4
seconds) scene. Disappointing that the clip used was so short, but pleasing
to know that the film is still in the archives at Granada TV, Manchester. I
am planning to enquire with Granada how much film of Davy they have, and if
there is any chance it will be available for purchase or loan, to show at a
fan club convention, for example. I will let you know of any developments.

another (completely unrelated) programme next saturday (6th) will feature an
interview with Micky. 'The 100 Greatest No 1 Singles' is on Channel 4 at 8pm
GMT. I think we can expect Micky to be talking about 'I'm A Believer', the
Monkees only UK No 1. Other contributors in the 4 hour programme include
Yoko Ono, Lionel Richie, Bob Geldof and Smokey Robinson.

Hi guys

More on Mystic Green's posting about the Daydream Believer's Movie showing on Sky MovieMax.  It's also being shown on the 19th and 24th January - so UK fans have 3 chances to see it.

There's also a little "blurb" in the Sky magazine about it. Its actually listed as the editors choice for that day and is reviewed as follows..."this sounds like a really bad idea. Surprisingly though, this biopic of the original boy band captures the mood of the era and the youthful energy of Americas very own fab
four....."

concentration more on "Monkee Business", and, in
addition to the tour, they are thinking about
"Broadway, a movie, and more recording".  Micky, Davy,

As you know, the TV show Dawson's Creek releases soundtracks of the songs
used during the show.  On the most recent soundtrack, a country singer...i
believe her name Mary Beth Edwards, sings a re-worked version of Daydream
Believer.  It's not as good as the original (of course not!), but I thought
I'd let you know.

with all the comedy skits and schtick, with guest stars, a different
celebrity playing Mr. Babbit every night, and the audience never knowing
who would show up on stage with the guys. "It could be Peter's friend James
Lee Stanley or Micky's sister or my band, all the familiar faces," Davy
says. In all of these proposed projects, Davy told MBF, "Mike is always

Peter Tork 'Once Again' a musical force
01/12/01
By RANDY ALEXANDER
Staff Writer
There are three musical sides to Peter Tork.
There's his Monkees side, his folk troubadour side and his blues side.
Over the next few months, Tork will be hitting the stage in each of those capacities. There's another Monkees reunion tour scheduled for March, immediately followed by a juiced-up touring effort by his band Shoe Suede Blues.
But it's the folk troubadour side that brings Tork to Hightstown this weekend with musical partner and best pal James Lee Stanley, who's recorded more than a dozen solo albums of his own. They arrive tomorrow as a duo at the Grace Norton Rogers School Theater in Hightstown to celebrate the release of their second duo album, "Once Again" (Beachwood) -- further cementing a relationship that began even before the Monkees.
"I don't even want to say how long it's been," says Tork. "There are no cars as old as our relationship. The Empire State Building is not as old as our friendship."
Actually President Kennedy was in office at the time it began, which Tork says was 1962. Stanley's Web site says 1963. Whatever. It was during an open mike night at a club in Virginia Beach -- three years (or was it two?) prior to those first Monkees auditions -- when both were East Coast folk circuit regulars. The music partnership didn't begin until much later, in the mid-'90s.
"James has got tremendous musicality," says Tork. "He's very melodious and has a great sense of arrangement. He writes extraordinarily well-crafted songs -- all of the time.
"There are two good reasons to work with him -- musicality and fearlessness. I don't know that the fearlessness shows up in the music, per se. But if he hadn't been fearless, he'd be in a garage someplace singing weekends.
"He's always been extraordinarily capable of work. He wakes up and he gets things done," Tork continues. "I'm a get-up-and-read-the-paper-and-drink-coffee-and-watch-television kind of guy. He's a much more prolific writer than I am. He can write an album in a week if he needs to. I have written only when I've really forced myself to sit down and do it. If I'm not under some kind of gun, I almost never do write anymore."
Stanley contributes five originals to Tork's three on "Once Again." There are also three covers, including an acoustic version of "Daydream Believer" -- making this the second time in a row that Tork has included a Monkees song on one of his independent albums. "Stranger Things Have Happened," which Tork released in 1996, included "Take a Giant Step."
Tork insists he does not intend to make this a trend on successive albums. He just happens to think "Daydream Believer," the last of the Monkees' three No. 1 hits, is simply a great song.
In fact, tonight in Alexandria, Va., Tork and Stanley will be playing at the World Folk Music Association's Benefit Weekend tribute to "Daydream Believer" composer John Stewart of the Kingston Trio.
"It's such an anthem," says Tork. "It's one of the Monkees songs that I do in my own personal shows (without Stanley), too."
Much as he enjoys his duo work with Stanley, it's Shoe Suede Blues that really revs Tork's motor.
"Blues is among the handful of kinds of music that have ever been transportational to me," he says. "It is among the handful that I have had any aspiration of playing. But in recent years I just said the hell with it, I'm going to do my best with it.
"I get to get off playing the blues. When I'm with my band, I get off every single time. In rehearsal, in recording, in playing on stage -- every single time -- there are at least some moments. The last time we played, it happened for an hour solid.
"There's some getting off on the duo, too -- particularly the harmonies. When James and I hit, the vocal blend is right. But not much blues trickles in. James is not a fan of the blues."
So where does that leave the Monkees in the world of Peter Tork?
Tork says he had a "wonderful time together" with Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones just the other day for a Vanity Fair photo shoot anticipating the reunion tour.
"So in terms of that pure clowning, there's a place to get off with the other Monkees," says Tork. "Those are two world class funnymen I get to work with. That stuff is wonderful."
In case you haven't noticed, Mike Nesmith was again not a part of the equation. Once more, he has refused all offers to participate in a reunion.
"Mike is too busy saving the world . . .," says Tork, ". . . or something.
"As I've said before, we may not make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and there may be no place for us in the TV Hall of Fame. But if there is ever such a place as a Hall of TV and pop music at once, then we may be the only ones in it."
Tork's take on the recent Monkees VH-1 biopic is that it was good in terms of his personal career and he was glad to have the name out there.
"And in terms of my personal vanity, I'm glad they chose a good-looking guy to play me," he says. "He actually copped my smile. He actually studied me so closely, he managed to change to my smile for the part. He's a very serious actor. Very dedicated. I enjoyed immensely hanging out with him. And I have every hope for an astounding career for him."
More important than any of Tork's musical collaborations is the milestone he'll be marking this month: 20 years of being clean and sober.
"It's unbelievable," he says. "The amazing thing is, every minute has been another milestone. The 20 years is the odometer effect. Any time I look up and think how long I've been clean and dry, I'm just astounded. It is such a liberation. The whole thing about alcoholism is it's an astounding, complicated and devious type of disease."
Tork will be on the road with Stanley when the actual anniversary date passes, but a celebration awaits as soon as he gets back home.
"I'm going to have everybody over," he says. "All my pals and bandmates and associates and friends and fellow recoverers."
Peter Tork and James Lee Stanley appear tomorrow at the Grace Norton Rogers School Theater, 382 Stockton St., Hightstown. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets $15. (609) 259-5764.

Here's some items for the egroups list.  It may be dated news, since I just got on the list last week.

In December last year I chatted with Peter between sets of a Shoe Suede Blues show in Hollywood, CA.  I asked him about the (then rumored) Monkees tour.  He said the Monkees would be touring the east coast and midwest in March, but would not be on the west coast unless they pick up a summer tour.  He didn't mention any other reunion activities (such as movies) except for the March tour.

In October last year one of my co-workers at Paramount Pictures saw Micky on the studio lot.  Apparently Micky had a meeting with one of the production companies.  He was wearing a nice suit and tie, and carried an alligator skin briefcase.  My friend recognized Micky and gave him directions to the office building because Micky couldn't find it (the first time I was on the lot I got lost, too).

Ever wondered why Run-D.M.C. decided to cover a lame Monkees song? Because
the opening beat was a huge hip-hop break. No kidding. I read this story
about Afrika Bambaataa, who used to play the Mary Mary break all the time.
Breakdancers would come up to him after and say how much they liked his
breaks, and he'd say, well, you were just dancing to The Monkees. They'd get
all freaked out about it.

If you're calling internationally dial 1-831-373-3100. The CD sounds great and Nez actually likes the four bonus tracks! We ranchhands love the whole album.

The bonus tracks are from two other concerts (Live at the Armadillo World Headquarters, 1981, and The Gretsch concert, 1995). You can listen to samples of two of them by clicking on the URL address below.

Videoranch has moved it's offices out to the Central Coast of California (Nez spends a lot of time out here, so we followed him out). We'll still have the Ranch Cam running from Videoranch, New Mexico, but we'll have a second one running soon from the oak-dotted hills of Videoranch in Monterey. Hi guys

"Magnolia Sue Waller" from Band 6 here.

I just got a phone call from a record company here in London to say that the week after next they are releasing Nevada Fighter and Tantamount To Treason as a double CD.  Nez has edited the liner notes for it and there are THREE BONUS TRACKS included.  One is Cantata in Fugue (instrumental), one is Smoke Smoke Smoke (a song about the "joys" of cigarette smoking) and the other is Rose City Chimes (previously released as the b-side of a vinyl single but never before on CD).

Because of licensing laws they are currently only allowed to sell within the UK.

Liner notes and photo of the cover will be on the Band 6 website within the next day or two.  www.bandsix.btinternet.co.uk

Micky on `The 100 Greatest No 1's of All Time', Channel 4, January 6th

This marathon 4 hour programme was the result of votes cast by people in the music industry as well as around 100,000 ordinary members of the British public. The programme ran down the top 100 hits in reverse order, the only criteria being that it had to have been a UK No 1 single. I expected `I'm A Believer' to feature early on - that is, at the lower end of the 100 - as in the UK the Monkees profile is currently low, and their reputation with the public generally is as simply a `manufactured band for TV' when of course we know there was more to them than that!

I was pleased, then, that Micky didn't appear on the programme until we had reached number 17, the respectable placing in this poll for the Monkees only UK chart-topper. "OK, ready, everybody?" announced an excited Micky, "here they come" he yelled, sticking his fingers in his ears as 60's footage started of the boys playing the song. It was the 'performance' (gold shirts) rather than a 'romp'.

"The Monkees wasn't a band, the Monkees was a television show about a band. An imaginary band that didn't exist" explained Micky, "and still doesn't exist". It seems to me that whenever Micky is working with the Monkees, he is proud of the group, but when he is pursuing other projects, he dismisses it.

Accompanied now by a creative compilation of `romp' footage, Micky went on. "The Monkees was almost like a musical on television, cast in much the same way" he suggested. "It was film tests, vocal tests...it went on and on and on.".

On filming the series, Micky recalled with a smile that "We'd come out of our dressing room after just partying! Eight o'clock in the morning, we're already going `Hey, what's happening! Alright, party! Camera! Hi, camera!' " as he looks directly into the camera, grinning.

Moving on to the recordings, Micky remembered that he would be "Going out of sessions, like the `I'm A Believer' sessions, and humming the songs, which is always a good sign". Accompanied by continuing film from the romps and the opening titles, Micky told us "I did so much recording so quickly and I listen back now, to like even `I'm A Believer' and I go `Oh my God!' - it was probably two o'clock in the morning. My voice is cracking on the high notes. God, that vocal sucks!" You do yourself a disservice, Micky, and I'm sure the 10 million or so who bought the record would agree.

Micky concluded his reminiscence of the classic hit. "This was an imaginary group that, fortunately I think, in the long run, we actually had the goods to back it up". Just when you though you had escaped from the old Star Trek joke."You know, the Monkees becoming a real band, I've often said, is like Leonard Nimoy really becoming a Vulcan".

The song and the performance (especially Micky's vocal) are magnificent,  and it was refreshing to see it do so well in a nationwide poll, 34 years after it's initial success. By the way, The Beatles `Hey Jude' was number 3, Queen's `Bohemian Rhapsody' at 2, and John Lennon's beautiful `Imagine' was voted the best UK No 1 of all time.

This is par for the course.  This has gone on for YEARS
AND YEARS, you shouldn't be surprised.  There's always a communications gap
between the people who do the booking and the people who sell the tickets.
The people who sit in the box office and sell the tickets are ALWAYS the
last people to know.  They find out that the Monkees are coming the day
their boss walks in and says, "Monkees tickets are going on sale today."

I think most fans are used to that by now and are willing to keep calling
back until tickets do go on sale.

Well, for anyone thinking of heading Atlanta-way, I called the box office
today.

Here's the deal: the tickets go on sale next Saturday the 27th at 10 am. (I
can post the phone # if anyone needs it.) The tickets are $45 each, and
there is *no* assigned seating! That's right, it is festival seating. Yuck!
And there are just over a thousand seats. I spoke to friends who saw the
Beach Boys play there in '93. They didn't remember if there was a balcony
or not, but there might have been. Quote: "Excellent acoustics." The seats were arranged in a
gently-sloping pit towards the stage.

After last year's series on the 70's, this series concentrates on the individual years in the following decade. The opening programme featured 1980, but many Band 6 readers may have missed this show, not expecting any Monkee involvement. 1980, though, was the year that a TV series called `Metal Mickey' was launched. Micky was successful in his application to Humphrey Barclay at London Weekend Television, to not only direct but also produce the show. Featuring a robot that had a mind of it's own, the stories revolved around the robot and his family getting into a variety of adventures. The `1980' show featured Micky - he was credited on screen as Mickey Dolenz! - singing the theme tune to the show and we saw the opening titles from `Metal Mickey'. "But I don't understand how one of the Monkees," said puzzled TV presenter Jamie Theakston, "could end up making a rather crap British comedy series?". Having relocated to England after his run in `The Point', Micky had some success directing in TV where he felt he was not stereotyped as an ex-Monkee in the UK, the way he was in the US. "The story goes that a gentleman named John Edwards built this robot, and" explained Micky adopting a comical robotic voice, "it talked like that, and you could make it talk, and do things, and say things, anything you wanted to.." he went on with his robot impression. "It was unbelievable, when this thing came alive" Micky explained. "When John went in the (control) booth, and all of a sudden Metal Mickey lit up". Reverting to his metallic robot voice again, which the natural performer clearly enjoyed, "Hello! how are you? I'm fine! hey, baby, how ya doin'? baby, wanna boogie?" he joked. A scene from the show is shown, directed by Micky of course, and we hear from actor Gary Shail who played a character called Steve. "We all met up in the foyer of London Weekend TV, with this robot. `This'll never work!' Micky Dolenz just said 'don't worry, it'll work on the night!' - he was just so Hollywood". "It was the most amazing bit of puppeteering I've ever witnessed, to this day" gushed an impressed Dole nz. "It was phenomenal". More clips from the show are seen, with Micky reminiscing. "I'd say `OK Mickey, places!' " (robot voice) "Right, OK, I'm on my way!" the Monkee laughed, "and he'd roll over there!" It was around this time that Micky began to work under the name of Michael Dolenz - partly because, as he explained, "somebody else would go `Micky?' and both of us (robot and Monkee) would go `yeah?' " The Metal Mickey segment then looked at the robot's catch-phrase, "Boogie boogie". "You know who was on `Metal Mickey'?" asked our man. "I bet you don't know - Robbie Coltrane". An unknown actor in 1980, Coltrane rose through the ranks of comedy TV in the 80's to a successful career in comedy, drama and films. Under the direction of Dolenz, Robbie played a big, gay hairdresser. "Don't ever show that episode, he'll kill me!" quipped Micky. Sure enough, the funny scene was duly shown. "The last I heard, he was in a garage somewhere.." Micky offered as to the present plight of the once-famous robot. Another item from 1980 featured in the programme was the dog-trainer Barbara Woodhouse, who found international fame that year. "Walkies! Walkies!" yelled Micky, quoting the lady's famous dog-call. "Oh yes, of course I remember Barbara Woodhouse". Giving his own dog-training instruction, Barbara-style, Micky assumed another daft voice to suggest "you know, if it doesn't want to walk, you just give it a slight jerk!" as he pretended to yank sharply on a dog's lead. © Steve Bradley steven.bradley9@virgin.net To purchase Monkees CD's, Videos and Collectable rare items, visit www.monkees.net The Monkees Alert list is moderated, meaning you cannot post directly to the list yourself. More on Atlanta

Center Stage does not seem to have a web page that I can locate, but I did however find this:

http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile?fid=5&id=3002061

Please note that they do not have the Monkees listed yet.

The phone number for Center Stage is (404) 872-6622 .

Ticketmaster doesn't have anything listed for the Monkees in GA, but I do not know at this time if they would be listing the tickets.

Some further information on the venue, from someone who used to see shows there five years ago. They said that the seating is in a semi-circle in front of the stage, with a floor area -- the seats stop before the edge of the stage. That area could be filled with chairs for some shows.  The permanent seating is also fairly steep, so one can see pretty well from most places. They were sure there wasn't a balcony.

Hope this helps,
Kim

Monkees.Net needs your help! We want every Monkees fan to be able to let others know about this great group of fans on the Internet, so we have decided to create an official Monkees.Net T-Shirt. This shirt would be colorful and will help you find other online fans at the upcoming Monkees shows!

Show Your Creativity!

Submit designs for the T-Shirts in computer form or on paper, and your design (with your signature) could be appearing on fans all around the world! We are not able to use likenesses of the actors, nor can we use the Monkees guitar shaped logo.

Our idea is to show a slogan like: "Cyber Fans at Monkees.Net" for the front, showing the hairstyles (including wool-hat) of the four guys on top, and perhaps a few other recognizable items like Mr Schneider, a guitar and some records.

We also need a clear alternate design of just the Monkees.Net name for the back of shirts and for placement on our web site. The back should say "Hey, Hey it's www.Monkees.Net" with the web name very clear and large. No signature on the back.

If your artwork is chosen to be the winner, you will receive:

A Monkees.Net T-Shirt using your design
A Monkees.Net Mouse Pad using your design
A Monkees CD-ROM with band history, interviews & unreleased song

all-time top 100 in a recent poll. Micky was interviewed in the TV programme
recently, talking about the recording, that reached No 17 in the all-time
chart.

The Monkees only UK chart topper also features on 'Coronation Street - The
40th Anniversary Album'. Another double-cd, this set features a No 1 hit
from each of the last 40 years, the period the programme has been on air.
The Monkees were an obvious choice for 1967, of course.

Finally, 'Classic Gold - good times, great music' includes 'Daydream
Believer' in a variety of hits from the 60's and 70's, in yet another 2-cd
package. Let's hope these Monkees songs help bring the Monkees to new fans -
and bring them back for original fans - as the band seeks to increase their
profile in 2001.

Warner UK informs me that a 60 track double CD called Definitive Monkees is set for release in the UK with tv advertising on or around Feb 23.  The first disc is a greatest hits compilation comprising all previously released tracks and the second disc - which will be limited only to the first pressing - is 30 tracks comprising such things as the extended versions and alternate takes that Rhino (part of the Warner group) released previously on bonus tracks and missing links.

Here is a link to a Model Horse website that happens
to have a corky and Bimbo model. It is pretty cute,
with Micky (Corky) sitting on bimbo. Here is the info
that it give about the figure. "From the 1950's TV
Series and reissued from the 1958 Breyer Original.
Corky and Bimbo were Brought back by collector
request, the very unique and adorable Corky and Bimbo
set was a "Horse" and Rider pair produced by Breyer in
1958. The characters were based on a television series
that aired from 1956-1958 called Circus Boy, and
featured the not-yet-famous Monkees singer, Mickey
Dolenz, in the leading role! In the series, an
orphaned Corky was adopted by a traveling circus,
where he played around with Bimbo the baby elephant,
and usually saved the day at the end of each episode."

Brad,
I just spoke to a staff member at The Kahuna Pavilion in Wilmington, DE...the date of March 15th is not set in stone.  It could be the 9th, 13th, or the 15th.  Ticket prices also were not confirmed, but were estimated to be $21-$35.  The Kahuna Pavilion seats 2300 and they anticipate that this concert will be standing room only.  The date should be conifrmed by Monday, January 29th, so they recommended calling back Monday and they'd be able to sell tickets then.

Sincerely,
Alison Mailey

The Tim Buckley 2 CD anthology 'Morning Glory' is released on 20 March.
'Song To The Siren' , arguably the most beautiful and impulsive song he ever
wrote, is included here in 2 versions. The first is the original heard on
Buckley's 1970 'Starsailor' album in all it's 12-string glory. Previously
unissued, the second 'Song To The Siren' was recorded live on the Screen
Gems set of 'The Monkees', for episode number 58 'Mijacogeo' (The Frodis
Caper)'. Monkee Micky Dolenz who directed the episode, also introduces the
song.

other news....

The February issue of UK magazine 'Record Collector' reports that Elvis
Costello is to turn his hand to writing a TV series for Warner Bros in
America about 'some beautiful girls who play rock'n'roll and have a ball
spending someone else's money'. They'll also engage in all kinds of
'Monkees' adventures, and Costello will write an original song for each
episode.

next...

the 'Monkees Definitive' is a single-CD compilation album due for UK release
on 23 February, followed by release in the US 3 days later. The catalogue
number will be 8573 866912. Track listing unavailable at the time of
writing.

finally...

Rhino Handmade plan a Spring 2001 UK release for the 'Headquarters Sessions'
3 CD set, previously only available on-line.
